Werders Goal Machine Wins 16:1 In Bornreihe
Now that's a stylish start, as to be expected. On Tuesday evening Werder steamrolled SV Blua-Weiß Bornreihe 16:1 in their first pre-season friendly. 4,000 frantic supporters packed the sports ground and were only kept waiting for 14 minutes before the goals began.
Ivan Klasnic got the ball rolling with two real poachers goals thanks to fine set up play by Nelson Valdez and Frank Baumann respectively (14'/17') before Christian Hasloop snatched an early consolation (20'). Just two minutes later Werders Croatian striker grabbed his hat-trick after some good combination play between Valdez and Marco Stier. From that point on the Bornreihe keeper found himself fishing the ball out of his net with monotonous regularity. Marco Stier scored Werders fourth in the 23rd minute and Klasnic got on the end of a pass from Micoud to make it 5:1 (25'). Before the break the energetic Nelson Valdez increased the scores (34', 45' and 45'+2) and Ümit Davala from the spot (36') made the half time score 9:1. An improvement for Bornreihe on last seasons 9:0 scoreline at the break.
During the break, trainer Thomas Schaaf took the oportunity to try out his alternatives and made eight changes. Changes which didn't affect the flow of the game with Werder still hungry for goals. Substitute Mohamed Zidan was on the mark three times (55', 80' and 87'), Aaron Hunt once (78') and Valdez twice more in the 75th minute and from the spot in the 83rd after a foul on Hunt which increased the score to an almost record breaking 16:1.
Five time scorer Nelson Valdez, along with Ivan Klasnic and Mohamed Zidan (3 each) were Werders most successful players on the night. As new signings Jurica Vranjes, Jelle van Damme and Leon Andreasen could enjoy the cheers of the Werder faithful, keeper Tim Wiese will have to wait for his first real test. The 23-year-old made his Green-White debut in the second half but didn't have a single shot to hold.
Werder Bremens next friendly will take place on Saturday, 09.07.2005 in the "BetandWin-supermatch" at Norderney SV Niederkassel, the question remains if the Kreisliga side can at all test their Big League opponents.

"Killer" Klasnic Hits Niederkassel For Five In 15:0 Drubbing
van Damme in action
Werder celebrated their second 'Goal-Rush' in four days against SV Niederkassel. Following Werders 16:1 thrashing of BW Bornreihe, Thomas Schaafs side crushed SV Niederkassel 15:0 in the "BetandWin-Supermatch 2005".
As in Bornreihe, once again it was Ivan Klasnic who got the scoring started. 3,500 fans watched on as the Kreisliga team struggled to restrain their big league opponents for just six minutes "An der Mühle" on Norderney before the "Killer" Klasnic headed home an Ümit Davala cross to put Werder ahead. Two minutes later Klasnic converted a pass from Johan Micoud to make it 2:0. It wasn't long before it became clear that SV Niederkassel keeper Tobias Geiger would be their best and busiest man of the match.
Three minute hat-trick for Klasnic
But even SV's in form keeper couldn't prevent the scoreline reaching double figures before the break. Alone Klasnic was on the mark three more times before being replaced by Valdez for the second half. Even more impressively, the Croatians third, fourth and fifth goals fell within a six minute period (37', 41', 43'). The rest of the first halfs goals were notched up by Mohamed Zidan (24', 44'), Johan Micoud (16', 30') and Frank Fahrenhorst (15'). Thomas Schaaf opted for an almost completely new look side in the second half leaving only keeper Kasper Jensen, defender Florian Mohr and striker Mohamed Zidan to partake in the second half.
Werder take their foot of the gas
Werders tough training schedule appeared to take its toll on the Bundesliga side in the second half. Even so, Mohamed Zidan (53', 86'), Marco Stier (61'), Nelson Valdez (80') and Jurica Vranjes (82') were able to boost Werder to a 15:0 final score.
The defence, captained by Petri Pasanen, found themselves with little but not nothing to do. By the end SV Niederkassel were happy to have achieved their goal of not conseeding more than 20 goals for which Thomas Schaaf was full of praise: "The lads from Niederkassel fought well and gave everything". The coach had an equally good report for his own side: "It was clear to see that our players are in the middle of hard pre-season training. Despite that we scored 15 goals and presented our fans with an enjoyable game."

Valdez And Zidan Get Hat-Trick Happy In Meppen
Werder Bremen have now won their third pre-season friendly in a superior manner. Thomas Schaafs team disposed of Oberliga side SV Meppen on Tuesday evening with a 7:0 win thanks to two hat-tricks from Nelson Valdez and Mohamed. Zidan.
Valdez back-heels hat-trick
Werder were the better team from begin on and combined fantastically for long periods. Werders first goal left many of the 9,850 fans at Meppens Elmsland stadium breathless. Aaron Hunt fed Nelson Valdez a strong through pass which the Paraguayan flicked on to Johan Micoud with his heel. "Le Chef" Micoud found himself going it alone towards the Meppen keeper Marcus Antczak and then passed back to the advancing Valdez who only needed to push the ball over the line (17'). Valdez scored his second after a chip from Christian Schulz and sliding the ball into the far corner of the Meppen goal from the right (29'). The sparky striker completed his hat-trick in the 35th minute. Valdez first lifted the ball over his marker before heading past Antczak.
With a more emphatic exploitation of their chances, Valdez (43') and new signing Jurica Vranjes, who cracked a shot off the bar (25'), could have easily extended Werders half time lead. The Green-Whites goal saw only one peice of action as Tim Wiese, for the first time in his new pink jersey, allowed himself to catastrophically misplace a pass but was saved a pink face as Ümit Davala cleared the danger.
Werder keep the pressure on
At the break, Thomas schaaf, as expected, made a number of changes bringing Reinke, Fahrenhorst, Klasnic, Zidan and Baumann who took the captains armband from Johan Micoud. SV Meppen soon had their second and last attempt at goal. Striker Yaw-Oppong broke free on goal but was denied by the reactions of Andy Reinke (49').
From then on it was all Werder pressure again and a will to score unchanged since leaving Norderney. Following two good chances from Klasnic (55') and Zidan (58'), Aaron Hunt made it 4:0 with a fine solo effort and strike from 17 meters (60'). Ivan Klasnic became provider thirteen minutes later despite having his shirt tugged to pull a pass back from the by-line to find Mohamed Zidan.
The Egyptian had only to say "Thank you" and slide the ball home to make it 5:0. Zidan profitted twice more from clever assists. Firstly he pounced on a deflected Pekka Lagerbloom effort (80') and then he turned a Marco Stier effore into the glaring Meppen goal (90') - the second hat-trick of the night to round off another successful Green-White performance.
Werder took the game and their opponents seriously and reaped their rewards, which was much to the enjoyment of fans and trainer alike. Bremen have left a positive impression after their third pre-season test.
***********
For a combined score of 38:1 for Werder
These games are great to increase the confidence of our strikers. Its great to see the likes of Stier and Hunt getting in on the scoring. These matches should also help get Zidan back to fitness
