With the Euros now over teams are starting to prepare for the new HNL season. Dinamo are the reigning double champions while Sibenik replace Rudes as the newly promoted team. One major new rule the HNS has introduced is the 9th placed team will play in a play-off against the runner-up on the 1.NL, overall a good idea, makes the league slightly more interesting as the last few years the team which finished 10th was well off the pace

New managers: Hajduk opened a lot of eyes hiring Gennaro Gatusso but it looks like his relationship with Nikola Kalinic (new sporting director) helped. On paper its impressive but his managerial career has been hit or miss so far, hasn't done well outside of Italy. Osijek too hire an Italian manager, Federico Coppitelli, who has had success at the Italian youth levels winning trohpies at Torino and Lecce. Paolo Trammezani remains as Istra manager, Slaven keep Ivan Radeljic as their manager as well

In terms of players transfers little activity so far, the most active has been Osijek
  • Dinamo have yet to do any business but all their loan players (Kaneko, Vidovic, Ogiwara) returned to their clubs, they will hope to bring back especially Kaneko and Vidovic; there is still potential sales for Petkovic and Baturina, the resolution for Petkovic should be known in a few days now that the Euros are over
  • Rijeka have one the one big transfer abroad so far with their goalkeeper Labrovic moving to Augsburg for 2.5-3m euros
  • Osijek have brought in Jelenic (Varazdin) and Soldo (Gorica), both U21 internationals. They signed a young Brazilian youth international attacking midfielder and they are close to bringing in U21 goalkeeper Cavlina on loan from Dinamo. The big news in terms of outgoing is Kristian Lovric is not in the plans of the new manager, which is a huge fall for him considering the fanfare he got joining Osijek and the fact he broke into the NT playing for Gorica

Full fixtures, league starts August 3

Dinamo trying to bring in either Beljo or Roko Simic, Simic is on an expiring contract with Salzburg so he might be more attainable. They have signed Loko players Cavlina and Soticek, but Cavlina goes straight to loan to Osijek; Kacavenda who is recovering from injury will likely go to Loko on loan. They have also loaned out Topic to Zrinjski Mostar, he was getting some minutes with Biscan but since then has struggled (scored only two goals on loan at Rudes). Vidovic and Kaneko have officially returned to their clubs, Dinamo not willing to pay the asking price for either player. Drmic and Halilovic leave as free agents. They are close to signing former Rijeka midfielder, Adam Cerin, currently at the Euros with Slovenia and with Pananthinaikos and a Spanish center-back Raul Torrente on a free from Granada

Both Dinamo and Hajduk have changed kit makers; Hajduk will switch to Adidas (no wonder all the Macron shit was 60% off when I was in Croatia :p ) and Dinamo will have their kits made by Castore. As of now they haven't released the official kits which is strange as the season starts in about a month. The one leaked Hajduk kit looks like something from DHGate but it seems like a troll job

Soticek to Dinamo is looking less likely, instead they are turning their focus on a Colombian winger Juan Cordoba who is a member of the Colombian youth NT (he has interest from MLS as well). Another incoming player seems to be Samy Mmaee, Moroccan CB who was last playing in Hungary

Bertrand Layec from France in the new director of referees for the HNL. He was a long time Ligue 1 referee and refed at the international level for UEFA. He was head of referees in France, Belgium and Cyprus. No news yet whether they will continue to hire foreign refs for the derby matches (I believe they won't to start)

Looks like Gorica is the new Lokomotiva  Today they loaned in three young players from the Dinamo academy, the most notable is Toni Majic, striker from the Croatia U17s who was pretty prolific for the NT and Vito Caic who was at Velez last season on loan. They also bring in Mikanovic who was surplus at Hajduk

Mierez has been sold to a club in the UAE for about 3m euros, huge blow for Osijek, they have youngster Matkovic who is somewhat hyped but it will be hard to replace the Argentinean

Rijeka sign former Dinamo striker Komen Andric who spent the last few years in France where he didn't have much success

Dinamo close to signing Colombian winger Juan Cordoba for nearly 2m euros, he turned down moves to MLS and Saudi Arabia to sign for Dinamo, has some good numbers in their domestic league, was top 10 in scoring for the 2024 Apertura (South American league usually do split-seasons)

I'm not suggesting what you wrote is not true, but clearly their biggest problem is their defense. How the absolute train wreck of Kévin Théophile-Catherine still plays on that team is mind blowing.

Bjelica seems to be the favorite to return to Dinamo, but there are some contractual issues with Union Berlin where technically he is still under contract for another year

Here is the Round of 16 cup draw, somehow a fifth divison side made it this far, they are playing Rijeka at home. Two HNL matchups already

Bjelovar (III) vs. Dinamo Zagreb
Mladost Zdralovi (III) vs. Hajduk Split
Bednja Beletinac (V) vs. Rijeka
Dugopolje (II) vs. Lokomotiva Zagreb
Slavonija Pozega (IV) vs. Osijek
Varazdin vs. Gorica
Rudes (II) vs. Istra 1961
Sibenik vs. Slaven Belupo
