Anybody following this? It is a football version of the many "reality" shows that are mushrooming on TV lately. Basically, they held trials for young amateur players in various arab cities and picked a shortlist of 25 to make it to the academy. Once in the academy, 6 will be voted out each week, until only 1 remains. The winner spends a year at Newcastle United.

Anyway, we're down to 19, after the first round of evictions took place on Sunday. I'm glad to say that 3 Saudis are still there.

The hopefuls:

I'm glad to say, i'm better looking than all of them.

I also don't know what channel this is on...

Suprisingly, it seems very few of them think combing one's hair is a necessary part of their daily routine. Ali Lila from Lebanon looks like he just got out of bed and went to the photo shoot...

Ah to be young.

Anyone else agree with me that this guy doesn't even remotely look Arab? His surname suggests (as do his features) that his dad is Japanese.

Saudi - Japanese combo........thats COOL!!!

Saudis are actually quite ethnically diverse, particularly in Hijaz and that's because it's been the economic hub of the country for ages and trade has in turn brought many people who have stayed on and integrated into society. I know several Saudis of various ancestry from the Far East including Chinese, Filipino, Indonesian, etc, as well as numerous from African, South Asian and European descent.

We're not all bedouins. :D

Interesting Nero, I was under the impression (from other Arabs, would you believe it?) that a Saudi only marries another Saudi (as if marrying someone of another race is discouraged). It's good to read from an authentic source that counters such claims.

Well it depends, there are Saudis who are ethnocentric and will only marry with other Saudis, and there are those who won't even marry outside of their own tribe.

But there are also many Saudis who marry a variety of people from different ethnic backgrounds as well, Jeddah has one of the most cosmopolitan populations in the world and when you see Saudis here, you'll notice they vary greatly in terms of appearance. There are many people here who are half-Saudi and half-something else.

The whole notion that Saudi Arabia is a homogenous country is false. The country has great regional variations. The cities of the Hijaz (Mecca, Medina, Jiddah, Yanbu, Taif) are all very cosmopolitan (and for many centuries). People of immigrant ancestry are the majority there!

What I find ironic is that the top player will end up with Newcastle...playing in the Championship! :howler:

Well, from what i heard (can anyone confirm), it was the Algerian Seddouk El Hadj that ended up being picked for a year at Newcastle.
Actually, in the end they choose 3 of them to go to Newcaslte. One of them is Sadook El Hadj for sure, the other two I haven't seen because I just turned on the TV when the show ended.

Good that its all over though, I didn't like the two hosts.. :D

You said El Hadj for sure, how good is this player ? Did he stand out from the rest ? Overall, how would you rate the abilities of the players you saw ? Thanks for any info you can provide.

Ok, I just caught the rerun.. the three players joining Newcastle's academy are:

Sadook El Hadj - Algeria
Mohamed El Jabas - Egypt
Abdel Rahman Bokhary - Saudi Arabia

However, Sadook El Hadj was the 'official winner', i.e. he was the one who took home the Toyota. I guess the Newcastle reps liked all three players and decided to givem them a shot.

Tony,

I didn't really watch all of them too closely.. Its hard to judge because they all play in different position. Sedook is a midfielder who does a lot of very cool dribbling, El Jabas is a striker who has scored many class goals for the soccastars team (against Kuwait El Kuwaity, El Ahly Al Kahery, and Marseille), and Bukhary is a very young and very good left winger who can also in different position.

I think its good that all 3 are going, they'll stick with and help each other.
