Kezman returns to the fold
Friday, 15 August 2003 Print
Send

PSV Eindhoven striker Mateja Kezman is back in the Serbia and Montenegro squad for the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifier against Wales on 20 August.

Disagreement with coach
Kezman withdrew from the national squad after the 2-2 home draw with Azerbaijan in February following a disagreement with former coach Dejan Savicevic. The match in Belgrade will be his first appearance for Serbia and Montenegro since then.

Back in favour
Kezman is not the only player back in favour under new coach Ilija Petkovic as Milivoje Cirkovic, Goran Gavrancic, Goran Bunjevcevic and Predrag Djordjevic all return. Petkovic has called up 20 players in all, among them FK Crvena zvezda midfield player Dragan Mladenovic, who is included for the first time.

Injured pair
RSC Anderlecht's Nenad Jestrovic and Zvezda's Nemanja Vidic are both missing due to injuries, while Goran Trobok and Zoran Mirkovic have not been called up after failing to find clubs over the summer.

Coach states aims
"This is the team I was hoping for," said Petkovic. "The match against Wales is very important for us. Not so much in the competitive sense, but to restore motivation and self-confidence. In two days we cannot do much on the physical and tactical side, but it is important that we look at each other straight in the eyes and tackle any problem in communication."

'Building for the future'
Serbia and Montenegro are fourth in Group 9 and have little chance of qualifying. "I will not apply any revolutionary changes for the time being," added Petkovic. "We will play in a standard 3-5-2 formation. Now I am concentrating on building foundations for the future."

Serbia and Montenegro squad
Jevric, Zilic, Cirkovic, Markovic, Gavrancic, N Djordjevic, Krstajic, Stefanovic, Dragutinovic, Mladenovic, Bunjevcevic, P Djordjevic, Stankovic, Vukic, Ilic, Boskovic, Brnovic, Milosevic, Kovacevic, Kezman.

1.) Im pleased with our squad but where is Lazetic?? injured? Duljaj? Ljuboja? Njegus? RAMBO PETKOVIC? :(

2.) didnt mirkovic, along with mihajlovic and mijatovic say they are retiring from the NT??

3.) how can mirkovic and trobok not be able to find teams??

4.) damn its such a shame that our chances are nearly impossible to make it. Such a talented team that only needed to be coached properly and could have done well in this euro2004. truely a shame.

I agree with Petkovic's lineup if it will be a 3-5-2. I just dont like N. Djordjevic out there, he seems like a liability when he plays (was he the one that gave up the goal against newcastle???)

I don't like the choice of stoppers. Vidic at 50% is better than N. Djordjevic. Krstajic has not been playing well during past 6 months. Stefanovic hasn't played for a while due to complications with his transfer (has he played for his new club yet?). I also don't like Jevric. I'd rather see Vitakic playing than any of the stoppers. At least, Vitakic knows his limits and he uses his strengths (very good in air and playing 1-2 touch) to his advantage. Duljaj should be in. Nevertheless, I'd put Mladenovic in the starting lineup since he is in good shape, he is skilful, he is tall and great in air. We need tall players in this game and those who are good in air.

I am not sure whether Spanish-based, Italian-based and Greece-based players should be in the starting lineup since seasons in those countries haven't started yet. Thus, I'd rather see Boskovic, S. Ilic in the starting line-up than Stankovic or Djordjevic. Ljuboja should be given chance much more than Savo.

Rambo Petkovic,as far as I know, has not played for his Chinase team since he transferred from Vasco. Krupnikovic should be invited definitely.

Borba said:
dont we still have a chance if we win our final three games?
Mathematically, yes. Here is the table as it stands and the last games.

Wales 4 12
Italy 5 10
Finland 6 6
Serbia 5 5
Azerbaijan 6 4

Serbia and Montenegro : Wales
Italy : Wales
Azerbaijan : Finland
Wales : Finland
Serbia and Montenegro : Italy
Italy : Azerbaijan
Wales : Serbia and Montenegro

So Srbija can make it but they will need help from other teams also. They must win these last 3 games and count on Italy and Wales dropping points against Finland and Azerbaijan. The chances arnt to good :fero:

Well, if Wales beat Italy or they draw with them and we win all our matches we are in ;)

If Italy wins against Wales and we lose any of our matches we are out

And for our last option :

We can hope that everyone in the group failz their drug test  <-- easiest way to get through ;) :)

Mihajlovic to return

In my opinion Mihajlovic still has something to offer and should return to the National side. He has been in magnificent form of late for Lazio. I also feel that Vukic and P. Djordjevic should play before any other players in the midfield and if Kezman and Kovacevic are not the starting centre forwards then Petkovic is as bad as Savicevic. Also who is the captain of our NT side now that Mija and Miha are not there??????? I predict that we will win 2-0. If we do not win then we do not deserve even mathematically to go anywhere near Portugal in 2004.

Ben, Stefanovic played for Portsmouth yesterday (they beat villa 2-1). He got a yellow card but played well.

Fleka, Mihajlovic is a hard choice, the guy can still be useful with his free-kicks and everything, but he is too much of a concern when it comes to his discipline.
Plus, we got guys like Vukic, etc. who can score from the spot kick and cause problems, etc.
As for the defense, I don't like Vidic not being there at all, makes me a little nervous, hopefully Bunjev can make up for his absence.
Also, there is still room in the squad for 2 more players, so I don't see why another striker wasn't called (Ljuboja).
This game means everything though, the players must be pumped for it, because anything but a win won't do.
Hopefully everything will turn out good in the end...

Lazovic leads from the front
Tuesday, 19 August 2003
Serbia and Montenegro 3-0 Wales
Serbia and Montenegro powered to a convincing victory in Novi Sad tonight to pile the pressure on group leaders Italy.

Danko Lazovic keeps on scoring for his country

Trio on target
Goals from Igor Matic, Danko Lazovic and Dejan Milovanovic in front of 8,000 fans moved the home side on to 13 points from six matches in UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifying Group 9. The Italians have a game in hand and a two-point advantage but must travel to Serbia and Montenegro on 9 September.

Matic opener
The visitors were never really in the contest this evening, despite having won their previous two contests after a six-year spell without victory. Matic put the home side in front on ten minutes with a deflected shot but victory was not assured until the 20-year-old Feyenoord forward Lazovic found the net.

Top prospect
The Dutch club are reported to have paid FK Partizan €6m for Lazovic's services in the summer and he showed why he is already a full international by firing in from close range on 50 minutes. The 19-year-old midfield player Milovanovic, of FK Crvena Zvezda, settled the contest with a free-kick with 15 minutes left on the clock. Wales could have pulled one back in the closing stages but Kevin Gall, of English league club Yeovil Town FC, shot over from ten metres.

Our U21 team is doing a much better job than the seniors for sure right now. Lazovic, i think is not far away from a call from Petkovic for a place in the NT, i think he just needs to show that he can be consistent in Feyenoord for a couple of games.

Tonight we have a good chance o get a decent result, however i am not sue that the team will be able to suddenly play good football after seeing our recent couple of games. But I am sure they are motivated and I hope they surprise me, I know there is capacity.
What is to our advantage is that Wales for the first time have real pressure to win and they might not play that well because of the stress. Bt our team needs to play faster and more direct because Wales works hard, tries to play simple and effective and fast so I hope that if we can stop their 3-4 stars the team can get out of balance a bit and that we take our chances.

About our line-up predictions, this must be the hardest game to prdict when coming to probable line-ups in a very long time.
We don't know what Petkovic is thinking, but I am sure he won't make any big changes. I think he knows what he is doing, knows it much better than Savicevic.
I think a 3-5-2 as our petko (i'll refer to you as petko and the coach as petkovic, this could get confusing :))said earlier. Djordjevic as a right back though is very risky, and we dont need risky in the back, but then again, what are our options, well i'd rather have Cirkovic, although he has a couple of things to improve in his game.
The rest of the defence is pretty obvious since Vidic and Mihajlovic can't play. Stefanovic will surely be the central defender, and I hope he has a great game, but i really wish Vidic was here...
The midfield is very hard to predict, but S.Ilic should be given a chance. Put him to the right, Vukic in the middle. Djordjevic, Boskovic and Stankovic can fight fo the rest of the places.
Bunjevcevic as a defensive mid is good, but I wish to see Duljaj in there as well instead of dragutinovic if i look at Petko's 3-5-2.
Attack should be Kezman and Kovacevic.
We need to be really fast when we gt the ball, so that we can use kezman's agility and speed. He will run a lot, that's for sure, and the midfielders need to play fast. kezman should not be involved in the game outside the penalty area if I exaggerata a little. His constant movement will surely cause problems for the Wales, but when there is a chance he needs to score, because he won't get many of them.
In general, i don' think petkovic should go with choosing the players because of who they are, but to see who is best prepared, like Ben said. Like Ljuboja, who should get a chance to play some minutes. Kovacevic's season isn't even close to a start, even if he said that the preparations have been extremely hard training.
OK, it takes too long to analyze every part of the team, I should have strated earlier, a couple of days earlier, but i predict a 2-1 victory. Kezman and Vukic as the scorers.

I saw the U-21 game. Solid performance but nothing spectacular. Wales were very poor opponents. Lazovic looked good, Milovanovic and Mijailovic too. I don't se how Milovanovic cannot be among Zvezda's top 17 players when he is better than Krivokapic, Bogicevic and Kovacevic. I liked the effort of Djalovic who came in the last 30 min. He had a great desire to score and he almost did. He tried very hard sliding, tackling and recuperating almost lost balls.

Regarding the senior's game, I bought me a ticket. N. Djoredjevic is the only questionable player since he has back injury. All others are ready. Midfield cannot accomodate Vukic, Ilic, P. Djordjevic, Stankovic and Boskovic at the same time. At least one defensive midfielder, most likely Bunjevcevic, will have to play. Otherwise our defense, which is weaker considering that Vidic is out, will be in trouble. We will have very hard time with this defense since I don't consider N. Djordjevic, Krstajic, Stefanovic and Cirkovic as very good players.

#23 ·
Sorry to sound like a broken record Ben but how much did the ticket cost you? :D

#25 · (Edited)
Thanks Borba, it's good to know there is a backup, since I can't watch this game, not even on TV... Ben, I hope you have a good evening at the stadium.

I know that the midfield needs at least one central defensive midfielder, or two if we play a 3-5-2 as Petkovic said we would, and I only trust Bunjevcevic because when he has a good game, he is fantastic, but he is a little too slow. he also sometimes thinks too much (or too long rather). We don't have a better player for that position though, maybe Duljaj, but isn't called up so i don't know what Petkovic is thinking.

Tix prices:

West Sector 400 din.

East Sector 350 din.

North and South Sectors: 100 or 150 din. (I don't remember exactly).

It was raining in the morning in Belgrade and the temerature right now is 26-27 C. Welsh players are happy because they were very concerned about the temperature which was 34 C yesterday.

A possible midfield according to Belgrade media will be Bunjevcevic, Dragutinovic, Cirkovic, Stankovic, Vukic. Forwards - Kezman and Kovacevic. Gavrancic, Stefanovic and Krstajic will play the defensive line.
