Mandela was very well known in 1987 in Italy. And he was not considered a terrorist, not at all. The statement "most Italians had never heard of Mandela" is correct just if you consider the fact that most of Italians don't give a damn for anything out of football, cars and gossip.

 

Thatcher was loathed by the BBC universe so the fact that she (justifiably) had reservations about the ANC hardly makes it a bold move to endorse Mandela in 1987. He could've dedicated the prize to Robert Mugabe and they would've applauded.
