Milan are ready to demand the 1993 Champions League trophy after a Marseille star claimed the team was on drugs for the Final.

The Rossoneri lost the match in Munich 1-0 to a goal from Basil Boli, as their opponents became the first French team ever to lift the trophy. It was a shock, as Fabio Capello’s side had a 100 per cent record until that point with 10 consecutive victories.

Now former Marseille midfielder Jean-Jacques Edelie has revealed in his autobiography that the game was not all it seemed to be.

“The only time I agreed to take a doping product was the 1993 Champions League Final,” he confessed in the book that will come out on March 1.

“In all the clubs I played in, I saw some doping going on, except for Bastia, but this was the only time I accepted. We all took a series of injections and I felt different during the game, as my physique responded differently under strain. The only player who refused to take part was Rudi Voller (pictured).”

The news is a particular shock to Milan, as among the Marseille stars were future Serie A heroes Didier Deschamps and Marcel Desailly.

It’s not the first time that the French club has been embroiled in controversy, as it emerged they had fixed their title-clinching League game against ASOA Valence-Clime so that they could concentrate on the European Final. The side was stripped of Le Championnat, relegated and barred from defending this trophy.

Milan have asked their lawyers to look into the situation and many of the players who lost that day are hoping to be awarded the title with a 13-year delay.

“I am shocked and find this news disturbing,” Daniele Massaro told the Corriere dello Sport. “If these allegations are proved, then it would be right to take the trophy away from Marseille and return it to Milan. The whole thing is simply incredible.”

Roberto Donadoni, who is now Coach of Serie A side Livorno, aimed his scorn at the club hierarchy.

“I don’t know what the future of that cup holds, but one thing is certain: if it's proved that all the players were on something, then the directors must’ve had a hand in it. I remain stunned by the fact that professionals in this sport can go to any lengths in order to win.”

Vice-President Adriano Galliani called for UEFA to take action over these allegations.

“Our lawyer is looking into the situation and we believe that UEFA cannot help but begin an inquest when confronted with these statements. Of course, if Marseille really were on drugs against us that night, then I think it’s right for the trophy to be assigned to Milan. We’ll wait and see what happens.”

It's with the highest regard that UEFA should look into ASAP, and should effect an overturn of the result. This is the worst crime against football - Cheating to win. Not only cheating to win, but robbing the fans the right to a fair spectacle, not just Milan fans, but Marseille fans. The team could've won without drugs.

Voller shouldn't be exempt either. He never said a word just to hold onto a medal.!!!!

What a pitty, This is a crime against football in general, not just a champions league title was stripped from us but a star that could have done something to make the club even more greater. Think about it, At Old trafford Paolino would've lifted Number 7 instead of 6.

Its a shame, really.

If true it is a shame. If true I find hard to believe how desailly could look his milan team mates in the eye knowing what he'd help unfairly steal from them.

What do people reckon should happen if it is all proven? Should the trophey be handed over to milan giving us number 7, or should it stay as it is, except for the parties involved being punished, and just be considered as a very disappoiinting and unfortunate episode of champions league history.

The entire Marseille team was on dope that night? Or only Jean-Jacques Edelie?

That CL cannot be awarded to Milan and it also shouldn't be ever awarded to Milan IMO, cause we didn't win it on the field...Would it make you a litlle bit more happy if we suddenly found ourselves with 7 CL's without feeling the joy of winning on the pitch?
If these allegations are true, the best UEFA can do is take it away from Marseille and somehow deisappear 1993 final from the history of CL. This way those players will never be remembered and that's enough punishment for me. But I doubt anything will happen either way, if we could change the result of a final over players' words after 13 years or video evidence, Juve should have been stripped off their CL against LFC.

They should reverese the result and give it to the team that didn't shame itself with drugs....I'm not referring to the 1993 Final ONLY, but to the 1996 Final too....

Forza Milan
Every team did doping back then .The problem is that Marseille bribed the referees in the league so that they could clinch the title early and focus on the cl final That is cheating .Also milan recieved many unfiar offside calls in that
Match and the corner kick which resulted in a goal should have a been a goal kick.

no hope of givin it back to milan ofcourse, only talks.
Having said that I believe this is what will indeed happen, may I quote a few lines from Tony's opening post within this thread:

It’s not the first time that the French club has been embroiled in controversy, as it emerged they had fixed their title-clinching League game against ASOA Valence-Clime so that they could concentrate on the European Final. The side was stripped of Le Championnat, relegated and barred from defending this trophy.
Having to underline that the fixed Valence game was played the same day as Milan's hard fought draw in Cagliari (Cagliari vs Milan 1-1), that was a tiny step forward towards the title that we eventually won edging Inter by only 4 points, in having to also unerline that the Final itself had was officiated by Mr Rothlisberger that was eventually banned for life through corruption charges, having said that I believe that in any other sport if a team or player is found guilty of either doping or bribe charges the title will eventually be granted to the runner up, Milan indeed have a case.

For the record, we were relegated to Serie B only due to 2 players fixing a match that was of no importance standings wise. We payed dearly back then.

It doesn't make sense they had the title stripped off them but the European Cup/CL was allowed to remain. What a load of sh!t,you could see how drigged up the marseille players were and how corrupt the whole thing was.it's all just a croc of you know what!

I don't think the Cup must awarded to Milan, because the rossoneri don't won the match but UEFA must try to quit this cup to Marsella, but, how you can demostrate this? It passed 13 years so I think it will be only a bad success :lazy:

The joy of winning that cup is gone and lost for the players. But for the club, the prestige of having a seventh european cup is very important. I learned a harsh lesson in May; it doesn't matter if you deserve trophy or not just that you win it. Give us that trophy!

Maybe we can get Juventus to hand over a few scudettos while were on the topic of doping. :howler:

It is quite disturbing to know more than a decade later that the events of a crucial European final were working towards a robbed victory for the French team and it sucks to be honest. Marseille in those days left no stone unturned to cheat.

The title should be stripped off from them without a doubt. What happens next is anybody's guess. It is a matter of UEFA having the balls to do something about it. The risk is that if a precedent is set to strip a team from its tainted title and handing it over to the runner-up then there will come a day when this same procedure can happen later and the same example will be used.

If Milan is handed over the title like this then somewhere down the line a Juve player will admit to steroids and then Ajax will make a case out of it. It has the potential to be repeated again and again which can make a mockery of the UEFA organisation.

I think they won't hand the trophy to Milan to be on the safe side and not to set a precedent that has a crack in it for teams to manipulate in the future but they will just take the trophy away from Marseille and leave that year blank. Tapie.

Personally, I would prefer for Milan to be handed over the trophy. We have two more UCL final appearances and a ring of Scudetti to show that our success in that era was not a one-off and we were undoubtedly the best team in the world.

We now know the truth, Milan lost to a team who used illegal preparates. It was probably the only way for Marseille to beat Milan that season, a season where Milan didn’t lose one single game in the tournament.

I don’t care if Milan will be handed the trophy or not, the important thing is that the world know that Milan ’deserved’ to win that final and ’deserves’ to have 7 Champions League titles.

For those who remembered the game, we had more than enough chances to finish off Marseille and win the match, regardless of whether Marseille's players were on dope or no dope. Though right now it's hugely arguable that Barthez would not have made the saves he did that night had he played without injections, or Boli would never have outjumped our defense and headed home the matchwinning goal :frustrat:

I agree with Haroon that if we were awarded the trophy, then future runner-ups would too cry foul if there are allegations of the champions winning by doping. Marseille should be stripped off the win, and the title for 1993 be left vacant. Afterall, the final was one which never took place ;)

if it's true, let the shame of this fall on Marsielle,as to Milan being awarded this trophy and knowing we went throught that whole tournament unbeaten for me it would feel quite hollow to accept it,again only if it's all true, hopefully this will add impatus to this current campagin.

All in all,

Forza Milan.

I don't know if this allegation of this not so-important player is true or he's just frustrated and wanted to make his book famous... but the truth is that Marseille was a better team than Milan those days, and anyone who watched them knows that this French team may have been corrupted but they had some legendary skill, and really were much better than Milan, that's the truth.
