It's now official...Barring a miracle, we will face Slovenia in the playoff. They won today 3-0 against Faroe Islands..

It will be hard, but I'm sure we can win..

Hagi said that it wouldn't be a tragedy for us if we don't qualify to the WC. He said we can't put ourselves on the same level with countries like France, Gremany, England, or Italy who all invest very large sums of money in their football.

Although, generally speaking, Hagi is right, in this particular case, since we are going to face Slovenia, I think it would be a tragedy if we don't qualify...

What does the forum think?

I'd watch out for the Slovenians....they are very determined...dangerous....take them very very seriously.....

But anyways,

HAI ROMANIA

I think our players are well aware of Slovenia's determination and talents. We played them a few months ago, and I believe that game opened our eyes. Hopefully when we play them we will have all our players in good shape, and ready to play some high quality football.
We will be ready!
Hai Romania.
Calificare ori Moarte!!!

I agree. when we have a "true" line-up out there as oposed to an experimental one and I beleive we will, we SHOULD beat Slovenia without a doubt and not doing so after how far we have come would be a blow. Not of course that it will be easy. The attitude of our players will be very important as well but I'm sure Hagi will stimulate the correct responce.

sup guys, well I think Romania is gonna go through. I think that u guys are gonna tie there, and then win at home. Do u guys know where the first match is gonna be played, Slovenia/Romania? Good luck. In the Polish forum, most of the ppl want and feel that Slovenia is going to win. Maybe cause their a Slavic country. Prove them wrong. Good luck.

It's understandable why Pols cheer for Slovenia but it's okay :D

the fact that we play in slovenia first is an advantage for us...I think

I've ran into alot of people of different races who want Slovenia to win, whats up with that? They had a good Euro I suppose, not that scoring 3 goals on Yugoslavia in that tourny was particularily hard. This is nothing against Slovenia they do have a good little side but we've been in 3 world cups in a row now and impressed people and entertained them (sometimes at least) Maybe its because we're established, people don't see us as an underdog anymore (ha we will always be the underdogs) Do the names Chivu, Contra, Stoica, Niculae and Ilie mean nothing? That and our uniforms are better looking. Ah Fk em Slovenia is the newest thing and thats all people care about. Well I guess that lack of international support makes us the underdogs again - good we play that role very well.

Ha I ran into alot of English people who want us to lose but I know why they feel that way :D Anybody that embarasses them, they want them banished.

Thanks for your support Kaluzny

Hai Romania!

Romire is right, people seem to cheer for the underdogs. It's human and it's okay.

Plus, other people may be jealous of Romania...but it's still okay :D

Slovenia aren't surely the underdogs, they are a good side.

Hai Romania! ;)

Why do the Poles not like Romania? Is it because the old EE forum verbal sumo wrestles that the ever antagonistic and irritable Lech always started :) ?
No, it's not Poles from this forum. U have to understand that Polish ppl are very close to Slovenians. It's not that we don't like Romania. Polish ppl, well the ones that i know, have nothing against Romania. Some Poles want Romania to win. It's just the majority that want Slovenia to win. Don't worry, it's not jealousy.

PEACE!

SOme new news:

It seems that Zahovic is out with an injury right now that may keep him out for both legs of the playoffs!!

This would be brilliant news, as there is no doubt Zahovic is their best player, playmaker, penalty taker you name it.

It would be a huge break for us!!

That dude from bundesliga is Aleksander Knavs. I think he is one of the best defensive players at this time in the world. And that be so sure that you will go on WC 2002.

Zahovic said that his priorty is to get well for Romania. We also have Nastja Ceh. He was the best player against Faroe Island. He was playing in place that usually plays Zahovic.

And finaly we have Srecko Katanec.

welcome to our forum Resevalec. I see you are a nre poster.

Yes, I heard about Nastja Ceh. But, if I am not wrong, you have also another Ceh who didn't play last game?

Even without Zahovic, Slovenia seems to play well.

David, I like to use a code of honnor and I like to think that everyone should use fairness as their guide ...

i guess people want slovenia to win just cause of the fact that they are such an underdog, this is a country with under 2million people where soccer is not even the number one sport and the players are virtually unknown with the exception of zahovic, but they have a good coach in katanec and he has really brought these guys together and built a respectable team out of them so if they were to qualify for the world cup that would be a truly unbelivable thing.

Hey - Slovenians :)

First of all I don't think Romania can beat Slovenia in Ljubljana.
In my humble opinion, the best scoreline Romania can hope for in Ljubljana is 1:1 (or maybe 2:2). If Slovenia wins, it'll be something like 1:0, maybe 2:1.
However I am sure Romania can win in Bucharest. No doubt. So if Romania can draw Slovenia away, they are through. However if the Romanians lose 1:0, then they will need a win better than 2:1 to advance.
My humble predictions -
The more likely scenario:
Slovenia - Romania 1:1
Romania - Slovenia 2:1
The less likely scenario:
Slovenia - Romania 1:0
Romania - Slovenia 2:1

Good luck Romanians.
Good luck Slovenians too :)

Well that's good to hear that the Poles don't favor us out of some intrinsic dislike for Romanians :)

And hopefully Zahovic won't play but even if he doesn't we are in for a bloody hard time :( But, I think that if we play our game, that is our very best game, we can overcome Slovenia because overall we have better players. And that's not to say that in the future the Slovenian youngsters won't become just as good, but at the moment I think we have more experienced and better players..let me just make myself feel good and list our great stars: Ilie, Contra, Chivu, Niculae, Popescu, D. Munteanu, Stoica, and yes even Mutu :) (that's if he has a good game)...to bad Moldovan will be out with an injury. But, yes (!) I think that 'if' we get our tactics right and we are switched on like we know we can be, well then I think we can take two wins from both matches. Let us hope that we don't get any untimely injuries! HAI ROMANIA!

p.s. It sucks that we have to play Slovenia, such an interesting EE team..I think the WC will be poorer for not having Slovenia and Romania both there :(

Andrija PFC- thanks for the thoughts.

My "humble predictions" are very similar to your.

First leg Slovenia 1 - 1
Second leg Romania 2 - Slovenia 0

Anyway, I hope by the time the playoffs start Cernat will have earned his first cap for the senior squad along with Ghioane because if they get on the team they could be a lot of help.

Imagine this lineup:

____Niculae___Ilie______

______Cernat__________

Munteanu_______Dumitru

___Sabau (Ghioane)_____

Chivu_Radoi_Popescu_Contra

________Lobont__________

Looks good at almost all positions except the right side where Dumitru is inconsistent.

But I think if Ilie and Niculae man the forwards we are bound to score some goals, and Cernat seems to strike a lot of goals too, so that could be intersting.

Hallo fellow Romanians, first of all I'd like to say hi to you all since I'm a new dude arround here.:)
I see you started an interesting debate here about our match to come. I have to say that I have a big respect towards your side, as I see it as one of the best not only in EE but in Europe as a whole. I am quite sorry that we have to face eachother, so that on of us will be eliminated.:(
But you have to understand me, because I'm a great fan of my country of course. So I will defenetly cheer for Slovenija. I know it will be two very very hard matches, and only one team will get out of it as a winner. And you know, the winner takes it all.
I my oppinion chances are pretty even for both sides, but I still think that your team is in a slite advantage. You certanly have a much more experienced side, with bigger names in it. But you see we have a great heart, probably bigger than anyone else! Plus of course we do have good players, not only Zahoviè as some of you mentioned.
So as I allready said, two damn hard matches are coming up and I just can't wait till it gets started.
