Yeah, this one is a real shame.

Aston Villa captain Martin Laursen has called time on his playing career due to injury.

The Danish defender, who has not played since January, has announced that he will be retiring from football with immediate effect.

He has been plagued by knee problems for many years and the latest setback left him facing a decision about whether to carry on.

Laursen could have undergone another major operation - this time on his right knee - in an attempt to return to action but he has instead opted to hang up his boots.

The 31-year-old's retirement will leave a huge void to fill in the Villa defence as he has been one of the club's most consistent performers in recent seasons.

He moved to Villa Park from AC Milan in 2004 and went on to establish himself as one of the strongest centre-backs in the Premier League.

Laursen has had to endure many spells on the sidelines but it was hoped earlier this season he had finally overcome his problems.

A series of excellent performances helped Villa mount a challenge for a UEFA Champions League spot before he was struck down again.

Martin O'Neill's men have struggled to keep as many clean sheets in Laursen's absence and will finish either fifth or sixth in the league.

Laursen, who made 53 appearances for Denmark before retiring from international football earlier this year, also spent time with homeland club Silkeborg and Italian sides Hellas Verona and Parma earlier in his career.
One of the best defenders in the league for the season and a bit he was actually fully fit.

#11 ·
Especially as he could distract Robinho.
Ronaldinho's character has definetely improved. There's definitely no problems there, well at least not so at Milan.

And you're laughing if you think the 10th best team in England doesn't need Gaucho. If you somehow convince him to stop trying to play as a left sided attacking midfielder, and finally play as a genuine #10 in a central attacking position, he'd be....awesome.

#12 ·
Laursen is a massive loss to the Villans. One of the best defenders in the league. World class in the air, very strong in the tackle, smart and leads the team so well from the back. Real Loss for O'Neil.

Ronaldinho would be brilliant for Man City, he could return to being a worldclass player in my opinion, if they make him the centre of the team and get his fitness up to a decent level. He is still a stunning player in my eyes, technically one of the best in the world, great in one on ones, great with set pieces, very very clever player, can create goals, can score goals. Please return to fitness Ronny, we need one of the best players of the last decade back to his best.

#14 ·
Boss not happy with Arbeloa?

also who would be going out in your opinion cos those 3 players would probably altogether cost 40m

#16 ·
Boss not happy with Arbeloa?
I think he's more then happy with Arbeloa but we have no cover what so ever, if Arbeloa is injured then we usually play Carragher or Skrtel there, even Mascherano.

Also Johnson would give us a more attacking option from full back then Arbeloa who would be the more defensive option, I think they'd provide good competition for each other.

Do you think Spurs are seriously interested? As they seem to be the main competition for his signature.

also who would be going out in your opinion cos those 3 players would probably altogether cost 40m
Well I don't think it's true we need to sell before we can buy, we have spent a similar amout each summer under the yanks and recouped most of the money from our big money signing last summer already but...

I'd say Babel is a goner, Voronin as well, Dossena will probably leave and their is also rumours about Riera going.

Also sadly it looks like Alonso might go to Real Madrid, if that's the case I can actually see us being worse next year unless the money is used to good affect and not just on the aforementioned three players (or similar players).

#17 ·
Ronaldinho is past it. He doesn't want to do better and he'd upset the balance of the team. Its a very simplistic view that "the 10th best team in ENgland should want Ronaldinho". We've got some fantastic midfielders who play well together. Robinho and Ireland look like a fantastic partnership, scoring 27 goals between them, and adding Ronaldinho could disrupt that.

#18 ·
If he can't motivate himself at AC Milan to get his form back to anything resembling his first few years at Barca I dont see how he would at City.

#20 ·
The big rumour for now ahs to be Tevez, I believe he will still be an EPL player next year, but for which team, and oddly enough, the team that gets Tevez, one of the other teams may well get Villa (unless he decides to stay in Spain) or Benzema. Showing the potential the EPL clubs have, but it also shows Arsenal will need a strong market to catch up to the big 3 really, as its unlikely Arsenal will get any of the above unless they decide to splash out a bit.

#22 ·
Weird that stuff seems to be heating up once I made the thread.

Only definite move today is Blackburn not taking up their option on Villanueva, which isn't a surprise seeing as Allardyce has barely played him. Kind of a shame seeing as I thought he'd do better, and he's heading out to the gulf, which seems a waste.

Rumours include Gourcuff to Citeh/Liverpool, Adebayor to Milan, Pennant to Wigan to presumably replace Valencia and Zaki to one of four teams.

Can see this summer being fairly quiet, though.

#23 ·
Zaki would be a liability though.. He's a good striker, but his attitude is severely lacking.

#25 ·
I think he'll most likely end up at a decent German team like Dortmund or Leverkusen. I think most EPL managers know what he is by now, and very few would be willing to take the risk..

#27 ·
I cant see Milan giving both Ronaldinho and Gourcuff to City, and maybe not even 1 of them if Kaka goes.

#28 ·
Well it depends on who the new manager is. Berlusconi doesn't want to give up Ronaldinho after last summer was spent chasing him, and he seemed to be his rather than Ancelotti's signing. I can see them quite easily surrending Gourcuff though.

#29 ·
Added Zaki to the list seeing as Bruce made it clear they're not taking up the loan option on him. I imagine I can get ready to add Quaresma, Paim (seriously think they got him in just because he was good on FM), Makaluka, Castillo and a few others to the loan returns list.

Only loanees I really see staying are Jo (though that'll probably drag out as Everton try and lower the fee), Givet and Di Michele.
