SIR Alex Ferguson admits the display of unsung hero Phil Neville against Arsenal on Sunday has left him with a tricky selection problem for tomorrow's match against Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

The United manager has to decide whether to recall Roy Keane, who missed Sunday's match with a virus infection, or stand by the younger of the Neville brothers, whose tenacious tackling helped to blunt Arsenal's lethal attack last weekend.

"The first thing to do is to make sure that Keane is fit to play against Portsmouth," Sir Alex said.

"It was a really severe virus infection that laid him low for more than a week.

"He has been back in training for the past couple of days but sometimes these sort of illnesses can leave you drained.

Options

"If Roy is fit it will give me a selection problem because I thought that, without attracting too much attention, Phil Neville did excellently against Arsenal."

Although several players, notably Paul Scholes, left the pitch nursing bumps and bruises on Sunday, Ferguson will have virtually a full squad at his disposal apart from the injured Quinton Fortune and the suspended Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Alan Smith and the fit-again Luis Saha, who both played in the midweek Carling Cup victory against Crewe, will be vying for the vacant striker's role alongside Wayne Rooney, with the all-action Smith likely to get the nod from boss Ferguson.

Goalkeeper Tim Howard reminded Sir Alex of his ability with a tip-top display at Gresty Road on Tuesday evening.

But the American will have to wait to reclaim his first-team spurs with the dependable Roy Carroll sure to keep his place after scarcely putting a hand or a foot wrong since replacing Howard between the sticks.

Lomana LuaLua, meanwhile, is pleading with Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp to restore him to the team against United, even if it is as a winger.

The ÂŁ1.7m former Newcastle flyer has killed off suggestions he fell out with Redknapp over which position he should play by insisting: "I'm happy to play anywhere."

But he was left out of the squad altogether for Tuesday's Carling Cup win over Leeds after an indifferent performance two days earlier at Middlesbrough where he was taunted by Boro fans and police were obliged to investigate allegations that he made rude gestures to the crowd.

Former Manchester City midfielder Eyal Berkovic has been ruled out with the calf injury he sustained after scoring the penalty winner against Leeds.

"He might be out for while," said Redknapp who is also still missing Steve Stone, the man who scored the winner against United in April, with Achilles trouble. But David Unsworth has recovered from a calf strain and with Arjan de Zeeuw back following knee ligament damage, Redknapp faces tough choices in defence and may have to axe Andy Griffin.

Last season: Portsmouth 1 Manchester United 0

Key opponent: Yakubu. The Nigerian striker was recommended to Harry Redknapp by Fergie and has proved a shrewd acquistion, with his blistering pace able to pose problems for most defences. His radar for the goal, however, can sometimes go awry.

I agree. Fergie should stop tinkering with the team and field a consistent team week in week out for the team to have fludity in their play. We shouldnt have a problem killing off Portsmouth, but then again we lost to them last season. Its not gonna be easy for us. I predict a 2-1 win.

Whenever we face weaker opposition, fergie tends to rest some of the bigger name players....the only problem is he rests too many......i mean the team could quite easily beat the likes of portsmouth or Birmingham if the team has 1 or 2 top players rested, but when the team has 5 or 6 first team players out, then even beating those teams become quite tough.

I don't think it has anything to do with Glory Hunting.

I'm a Gooner but I think I can speak for Mancs and say there's
really is not much they can say that hasn't already been said.

Midfield average be it in the CM or on the wings, inparticular Giggs and Scholes have been absolute no shows thus far.

Save Rio defence is very suspect and their backs have a lot of grit but skil wise leave a lot to be desired.

As for Sir Alex I think most Mancs have said it all the man refuses to pick his best 11 regardless of opponent.

Like you said, this current team just ain't doing the job. They won the match against the arse, as they knew that a defeat would result in hairdriers and boot kicking.

But O'shit and Silvestre are just useless now, so Spector has to get a chance.
Giggsy is looking tired and Scholesy still aint back to form, so drop Giggsy and move Ronaldo on the left and Eagles on the right.
Put Jones in the centre of midfield with Keano, and later on the match bring on Rossi for him, till Scholesy/Giggsy/Silvestre/O'Shea start proving their worth, as just now they r useless

A very disappointing result for us. Last weeks result now counts to nothing. All that goes down the drain. I just hope we do something about this pretty soon. If Sir Alex has to give the youth team players a chance to change things around then so be it. Something needs to be done and soon.

If Phil Neville is your "unsung hero" then you are in serious trouble.

sorry havnt been posting for a while...im back home for the weekend, too bad i gotta post something about this loss instead of a win..

the team is weak, but has great individuals...as mentioned earlier the defence is suspect, but i think with time this should sort itself out..we have good players in every position in defence, we need a good run and maybe improved training strategy?

the mid field is really weak..its obvious we need a proper DM..however, it will get better as ronaldo and rooney fit into their roles more.. but one main concern is giggs... ive noticed hes lost his pace, he cant even beat the first defender let alone making a run, he hardly gets a cross in...really, what does he do?? after seeing robben for chelsea today, its easy to see we missed out big time...

despite all these problems, the main downfall was the not being able to convert the chances into goals.. this tends to be the main problem in most of uniteds poor results this season... ok, the defence is shaky, the midfield almost lightweight, but to have 4 great strikers in the team but missing so many chances is incredible really

Swift, you will be docked points in the APL for that ridiculous prediction , it's only fair.

United today were appaling in every aspect, defence was hopeless, both Rio and Silvestre had nightmare matches, they were just plain horrible, midfeild was a shambles and attack was toothless, apart from that you were great :pp :D

Shit result and that too following what should have been a morale-boosting victory.

Midfield was simply non-existant yesterday resulting in the defence bypassing the mid four and hoofing balls to the front two in the hope that their enterprise would result in a mistake from the Pompey defense and we can capitalise.Giggs was just painstakingly slow and how we regret not getting neone during the summer break for him.He has been an awesome servant of the club for the past decade and more but now the time has come to end his career or at least see it being reduced drastically.Ronaldo,Rooney were left isoalted at times due to the slow passing and movement of the other midfield trio and Scholesy's poor form has been hurting us the most. His confidence is at an all time low and instead of threading cute passes to the front two,he's always looking at outlets on the wings and most of the time these passes are either overhit or intercepted by the defenders.

Extremely disappointing result for us and its a blessing that other results in the League has gone favourably for us or we'd have been back to square one after all the good work of Sunday.
