Our unfortunate Summer Mercato 08 balance sheet

Browsing through a number of post within our subforum, I couldn't help noticing the general sense of frustration and despair when evaluating our summer trasfer window, from 3 players past it as Shevchenko, Zambrotta and Ronaldinho, to past failures as Borriello and Abbiati, a one year wonder like Flamini and a bench warmer like Senderos, plus a bunch of unproven youngsters.
I must say that the general pessimism, realism, harsh remarks and lack of enthusiasm have unfortunately aggrevated my personal pessimism to such a level, that I'll no longer collect my 2008/09 season ticket.
Any of you able to change my mind

Nevertheless:
Forza Milan

With all due respect, are you MAD?

As a regular season ticket holder, the benchmark for you must be improving on last season and there is no doubt that this Milan has more potential than last years squad.

Ronaldinho > Ronaldo
Boriello + Sheva > Gilardino
Zambrotta > Cafu
Antonini > Serginho
Flamini :)
Senderos > Simic
Abbiati > Dida

What were your expectations given the cash flow issues following the CL miss?

My madness initially pushed me to believe that the actual signing were great :excited: however browsing through a number of posts here as elsewhere, lead to my current frustration and lack of confidence :sob:

Our signings are good and have some potential to be great. It is just that some problems we had for a longer time now have not been adressed properly. Most glaring one is how awful our defense looks when Nesta is out and he is out a tiny bit to often. None of our keepers is also filling us all with confidence.

we have a better team than last season, but it is frustrating seeing us settling for second choices in many positions.

I see what you are doing here :)

Anyway, we've had a great mercato. Sure a quality CB and a quality GK were needed, but with Maldini still playing a CB will have to wait until next year. We should have gone for Amelia, that is my only regret.

The team is definitely improved over last year's. We've basically covered every problem we had last year. A new GK, new defender, new wingbacks, a more skilled DM, new AM, a couple of new attackers. The team is younger and the depth is improved.

The problem lies if the additions are quality enough. We've basically gotten injury prone, old players who were unmotivated/flops in their last clubs. Sure if the players we've gotten get their groove back then it'll be a great season. But it can as well go the other way.

Once again Carlo hasn't gotten the players he want, instead Berlusconi bought himself some boy toys, so that's a concern as well.

I'm still optimistic as always and I think if all goes well we can win it all. Let's see how it goes against Bologna when Carlo has almost a full squad to choose from.

The only transfer I would have prefered not to occur was the sheva deal (but don't get me wrong, now that he's here and wearing the holy shirt, he'll get my full support). Other than that I'm happy with every single signing. If had added a gk then it would have been perfect but even like this we have had a very good mercato and I'm optimistic about the upcoming season.

If all the signings work, it will be one of the best teams ever assembled.
But there are far more question marks than guarantees given all our new signings current form. (not even past form, Dinho, Zambrotta are no where near their peak form, Sheva is a reserve in his current team) If we expect that beause we are Milan things will change, I say, maybe, more likely here than anywhere else given the history, the managers and the infrastructure, but very very unlikely.

Furthermore, I think it was clear that the thing to do was to renovate the defense:
Good steps were taken by getting rid of Cafu, Serginho, Simic and Digao
But now Nesta is injured severely (as usual) and all they have done is go for Senderos and Antonini (who is a midfielder), and probably promote Darmian. Our defense is leaking goals like crazy, as shown by a newly promoted Primera Liga team yesterday. You can field in Pato , Sheva, Dinho , Kaka and Seedorf, if we are leaky in the back, in today's game unlike Brazil 1970 you will be punished.

The frustrating thing, not on the signings necessarily, is that our management who is always relatively pragmatic about signatures seems to have totally lost it.

Our defense is leaking goals like crazy
I wouldn't judge by a pre-season, but it's fair to say that our Defence was not that poor last year in terms of how many goals it let in. Only Inter was considerably better. Now, on paper (time will tell the reality of things) the defense is a bit better than last year.

Our problem last year was up front and voila! Gilardino (a huge block for us) out, Ronaldo out and Ronaldinho, Boriello and Sheva in :) Plus Flamini for our otherwise aging midfield.

......I can definetly read a few wishfull words that under different circumstances could have allowed me to eagerly collect my season ticket as every year, and I personally thank you all for that :shades:
But below the surface, between lines, for the most, what I really read is lack of enthusiasm, frustration and a certain sense of embarassement.
So down to scratch, the real message is:
Diav, stay home, no need to suffer unecessarily
You guys have a heart, I always knew that, I love you all

Nevertheless:
Forza Milan

PS or to put it no so mildly - Milan would have seized to exist to long time ago and San Siro would be more empty than Delle Alpi ever was, if we depended on fans with such levels of passion and faith!

If we are too enthusiastic, this thread will be over-run by Interisti

Good point :) I followed Milan even when Chamot, Laursen, Guinti, Sala, Guily and Saudati were playing. Time to show our support for this quality squad :)

Nice thread ;)

If just 2 out of 3 (Ronaldinho, Sheva, Zambrotta) turn out to be as brillant as Bono expect them to be, it would be a magnificient mercato. Whether thats realistic or not, remains to be seen.

The CdS survey is odd, cause I doubt that any of those two transfers will have any major influence on our Serie A campaign, unless Nesta's injury is much worse than we feared.

For the record I dont expect anything but to follow my Milan every game. I have no idea what is the stage of affairs of Dinho or Sheva these days. I just have faith in both managment, coaching staff and all new and old players too - that when all of them put on the Milan shirt and face 80 000 on San Siro, they will deliver. I know they will.

My all time favourite Milan moment was probably when I was sitting in Curva Sud with my brothers Diavolo and Manuel and my lucky wife ;) we were 1-4 down to the Fax Champions and several guys there started shouting to the rest - ENTHUSIASMO RAGAZZI, ENTHUSIASMO!!!! I still get the chills ... My Milan!

If you ask me what do I predict this season, I will say possibly a return to CL next year, thats all!!

I always wanted young and new faces to be combined with the experience in the squad.. The thing is that its not only transfers & mercato, its motivation and flexibility as well..

I think the best move for us was Flamini, next comes Zambrotta and then Ronaldinho.. But I don't mind seeing a motivated Sheva, and new faces wanting to make it or break it!! This is the time where you need all players to have a typical Gattuso-spirit 24/7 non-stop!!

Having said all that, the pre-season was by all means crap!! Especially the TIM cup and Berlusconi trophy :D

You cannot overlook the fact that its almost a new Milan now, official games are never to be compared with friendlies, and things will be different!!

Pessimism is something we sometimes have, but surprises is what we Milan fans will ALWAYS have.. So awaiting kickoff!!! Its going to be the best season in Serie A we'll see in years, totally worth it!!

FORZA MILAN!

I think that is too pessimistic. I'd say a top 2-3 finish is realistic. Then we can shoot for the Scudetto next season with a new CB and new GK :)

Inter is Inter, the haven't improved much, but neither did they need to
Roma lost Mancini and got Baptista, which is hardly an improvement. The still sorely lack a winger to replace Mancini.
Juve got Amauri, which was nice, but still have a defence worse than ours
Fiorentina, who were not better than Milan last year (more goals conceeded, fewer scored) added Gila and Almiron, both need to prove themselves

Against this, Milan improved considerably both in terms of depth and qualilty. Hence I think the "CL at best" mentality is far far too pessimistic. True, many of our additions still need to prove themselves, but I see no reason to fear the likes of Viola and Juve this season.

The only problem with this mercato is that we have setteled for second choices or old/out of form flops, etc. Among the bigger names only Flamini is at his best. We are left hoping that Ronaldinho, Zambrotta, the returnees, and Sendros all lift thier game. That´s a bit too much hoping/gambling IMO.

However, having said that, I am overall very pleased with this years mercato. We finaly adressed some of the major problems that this team has had for a couple of seasons. Considering that we are going to miss CL and miss out on alot of cash it has been a great mercato, not perfect but enough to make us compatative again.

gazzetta evaluates Fio's mercato on grade 8 out of 10. best of all, considering Milan is 2nd with a 7. Juve, Inter and roma all get 6.5. Needless to say a Quaresma will increase Inter's grade.

Without a doubt this trasnfer campaign has made Milan better than last year's squad. The primary reason for complaints, imo, is that people are expecting a mercato that will bring in a dominating scudetto winning team (an unrealistic expectation) and that perhaps some of the directions we have looked to for improvement are major question marks. But regardless, even with question marks we have improved and if these questions are answered with "Yes, Dinho and Sheva still got it!" then this could be a great team.

Bingo! You don't go from down and out to dominating in one year. We have a good foundation for next year though, provided that a quality CB and a quality GK is brought in then.

There's no way an, ahem, 'old soldier', like your good self will not pick up your season ticket Diav!

For what it's worth, I hope and pray that we have acquired the players needed to make us competitive in Serie A. I'm not too fussed about the UEFA Cup, its the league I want, I want Milan to take the Scudetto back from Inter.

Its so easy to appreciate why the fans are frustrated at our signing policy. Galliani and co specialise in high maintenance signings. Why go to the supermarket to buy a loaf of bread when you can have a second hand Mercedes?

I believe our squad is stronger than it was at this stage last season. Abbiati is good enough to solve our goalkeeping problems. Zambrotta is an improvement at RB and Janku is getting better and better all the time. The CB positions are a massive concern, if Nesta isn't available we are very weak in there. Kaladze is so unreliable, Bonera is workmanlike and the signing of Senderos doesn't inspire me at all.

We are strong in midfield, but still lack any real width. Flamini was a good piece of business. Gattuso, Ambrosini and Pirlo are all guys that we can rely on in any situation. I'd move on The Puma and Brocchi given half a chance. Seedorf is a great player who has been an integral part of our recent successes, but where wil he find a place in the team?

Up front we have Ronaldinho who could be the bargain of the century or the worst signing since Rivaldo, who can really predict how well his signing is going to turn out? Still, he sells shirts and season tickets and, so far, he has put a smile on the faces of many Milanista. Kaka is Kaka, the worlds best. Pippo is Super, he'll flirt in and out of things. Pato has so much resting on his young shoulders this season, I'm sure he is up to the demands we have of him. Will Borriello see much playing time, I can't see him putting up with a Jon Dahl Tommason type role.

As for Sheva, not for me I'm afraid. I so wish that he will prove me wrong, but very few players return to a former club and make a success of it.

All in all, we are stronger and I am sure we will stand up to Inter this season. Still, with our weakness at CB, we might need to win every game 5-4!

So Diav, I'm sure you'll be winging your way to San Siro every second Saturday/Sunday, just as you have for many years, many more to come. We'll see you for our first outing at the Derby match at the end of September, looking forward to the fireworks.

Diav, I'm sure you know better than most that spending money does not lead to success, ask Moratti and Abramovic. Even with a crappy team but with a very strong spirit and mental strength you can win the CL - ask any Milan player from the 2007 squad.

I think we have had a great mercato, one of the best I can ever wish for. My only major disappointment is Senderos, I still hope that it is not official because I cannot find anything on acmilan.com yet. With one more world-class defender to partner Nesta we will be all set. This team could be as good as our 2004 team or even better. Another thing I get out of this transfer market is that.... I am going to be undefeated in winning eleven now :smileani:

You are lucky you even have the chance to get a season ticket, we here have to wake up at 9 am on Saturdays and Sundays, we have to set our classes so they dont clash with CL timings on 2:45-4:45 on Tuesday and Wednesday (this year its gonna be a Thursday). Cherish what you got, you wont know how valuable it is until you lose it..get that season ticket

Is here Canada if I well recall :undecide:

....coming to the season ticket bit, self inflicting harm, whether physical or psychological, is to be considered as almost capital punishment.
Let's say I'll give it a go for Milan vs Bologna too :stress:

P.S. To my surprise, Arsenal supporters rate Senderos not that bad if compared to a number of Milanisti :undecide:

I think Baptista looked much better then Mancini in the supercoppa, think it can be a very good signing for Roma. On the other hand Inter looked very solid as well.

The transfer campaign was good.

The main concern still is the core of the defence. We really should have added a starting material central defender and a starting goalkeeper.

But if the team works as good as it sounds attacking wise, we won't even need a proper GK and Senderos will be fine. Just like Arsenal.
