In what has already been a dramatic week, LA coach Sigi Schmid heads to the MLS SuperDraft looking to add depth to his squad.
The week began with the consummation of the long-rumored signing of Guatemalan international Carlos “El Pescadito” Ruiz, formerly of C.D. Municipal of Guatemala City, as a Discovery player.
“He’s a scrappy individual around the goal who’s got some good skills and the ability to hold the ball under pressure,” said Schmid.
Foremost amongst the Galaxy’s concerns is the back line, with Greg Vanney's future with the Galaxy yet to be determined.
“Without Greg Vanney, there’s a little bit of uncertainty whether or not they are going to extend his loan or possibly buy him at the end of this loan period. So we have to be concerned with that,” said Schmid.
Schmid has played dispersal draft acquisition Tyrone Marshall in the center of the defense in some recent scrimmages. “We’ve felt that Tyrone Marshall has done very well for us and we’ve had to play him in the middle of defense in a few of the practice games…and he’s done very well there."
Marshall was acquired primarily to replace the recently retired Paul Caliguri as a left back. Schmid denied that Marshall was set for a loan deal with a British club.
Also on the Galaxy shopping list for the upcoming SuperDraft is a left-sided player and a Project-40 player or two to augment the non-protected roster.
