Another big qualification match. We should win, but we shouldnt take anything for granted. Georgia are not a bad side, we should concentrate and secure the win. A win here and Scotland or France screwing up in their 2 october games (we have just 1) would put us in a good position. Probably needing just a draw in Scotland, but of course if Scotland and France win twice we may need to win in Scotland in November. Its very dangerous times right now.

Anyway lets just concentrate on our game. A win is all thats needed. Hopefully Scotland screw up in their earlier kick off :)

I would play the same team that played Scotland (if all fit), but with Oddo and Toni for Panucci and Iaquinta if fit. Indeed this does also mean Gattuso and De Rossi on the bench for this match. We should play just 1 DM next to Pirlo with Perrotta above them and considering the game Ambrosini played he deserves to stay in the team.

We also play South Africa 4 days after this in a friendly. So for the tie against Georgia Id call experience and those who have done the business for us so far. Against SA Id call up the likes of Rosina, Montolivo, Foggia, Chiellini etc. to replace some of the main players for that match.

I dont want to say what squad Id choose for Georgia as its far away, but I personally have an idea already of what Donadoni should or even will call and I dont think it involves any uncapped players unless they suddenly explode in this next month :)

Materazzi is out with injury and Cannavaro is suspended for this match. I see a Panucci-Barzagli central defensive partnership unless someone can step up in Serie A and show Donadoni they deserve a shot here...perhaps Ferrari if healthy?

Indeed I would say Ferrari or Panucci are the safest bets... no need to risk here. I would trust Ferrari a little more if he has played some matches by this time.

No consideration of Gamberini at all? The only thing that speaks against him is no international experience, but for the rest why would you (or wouldn't you) play him? I think he can replace Materazzi better than anyother defender.

And I don't think I consider him highely just because of my Fiorentina bias. :lala: :hopeful:

Pavel my reason would be that playing Gamberini and Barzagli together is indeed too little experience. Maybe they can play together, but Ferrari (someone who has played big CL games aswell as 10 times for Italy) or Panucci (who has played many a big match at CB) have more experience and can marshall the defence better.

Normally when you have your first cap as a defender its nice to play either in a friendly or next to someone with great experience, for Gamberini it would be a huge test next to someone almost as inexperienced in Barzagli.

However it is against Georgia and they are beatable even with Gamberini and barzagli at the back if it was them.

I have the feeling Donadoni will play Panucci however.

I also hope Gilardino gets a recall for either this or the South Africa game.

Hopefully in this match we dont have to see Perrotta in his regular Roma role. It doesn't work without Totti so we shouldnt use it................
I disagree... I think it canwork with Toni upfront... the whole point of Perrotta is to make runs and create spaces... he does it very well and he also presses the opposition from this position too. If Perrotta can't play I would like to see Aquilani given the role. Either way I prefer this formation to the 4-3-3... especially in matches we need to win. I dont mind the 4-3-3 in matches we know will be very tough in the midfield.

Just so you know this game will be in the very nice Luigi Ferraris stadium in Genoa. I hope for 35.000 roaring us on to victory.

Imagine, if Aquilani wants to win a place he actually has to improve his current form
Aquilani is probably at his best ever so far... what are you smoking? Gilardino on the other hand... meh.. :groan:

I agree with Deano, place the experience guys, but also give more time to youngsters like Aquilani for more than the usual 5 minutes.

The likes of Cassano (when fit), Aquilani, Montolivo, and Rosina must be incorporated more into this Azzurri squad. Age and the retirements of Totti and Nesta have really caught up to the World Champions and Donadoni needs to realize this.

I agree but for now I would play the guys we know about... especially against georgia... my reason is that 4 days later we play South Africa... thar is the match for Montolivo, Rosina etc... thats my idea anyway but its clear Donadoni will probably call Diana, Palombo etc. for that game :( I hope not anyway.

I dont know I just cant be bothered to add Italy into there.

I'd like to think he's not blind to this, man. Right now he rates experience more highly. But yeah, for the Sth Africa gig at least Rosina. Aquilani should be there as a matter of course. I guess you'd agree with me Donadoni won't be trying the young guns until after the last Euro qualifier though, assuming we make it. He's then got his head between a rock and a hard place. Does he experiment again in the warm up friendlies for Euro 2008 or run out the tried and trusted brigade to like, give them the practice?

If Italy qualify, Donadoni and FIGC will need to schedule at least 3 friendlies, hopefully four or five prior to the Euro's. I can see one just prior to the league break, and then another two in Feb, March, and hopefully 1-2 more just prior to the Euro. We should see the likes of Aquilani, Montolivo, and Rosina in those games. I'd also like to see Gamberini and Chiellini too, as well as Quagliarella. Hopefully by this time Miccoli, Cassano and Gilardino earn a way to the top too. This will be a perfect time to turn over/incorporate younger generation in time for a Euro run.

haha you are misunderstanding me.

You see, Aquilani at his best at the moment still isnt winning a place.

That means if he wants to start he actually has to play better than he is at the moment to convince Donadoni.

So many good young players with big wraps to take over a world cup winning team...it wont be easy and the pressure is on for them...but, with totti and nesta retiring, and many more will be doing the same over the next 2 years, there will be plenty of opportunities for them.

I'm hoping Juve gets Giovinco and Marchisio back so those two players and Nocerino get chances as well. Not at the level of others mentioned yet, but i can see them getting there.
