This is as big as it comes. Arguably the best sport director in the world has signed for us for 4 years (plus one).

PS: Can a mod fix the title please? lol

This will be very interesting to follow. If you give him the power and tools he needs to succeed, and he can adapt to Italy well. Certainly has the chops for it, he is great with south american and french market, besides the spain he comes from, so expect fairly varied type of signings, especially from France.

This article is highly recommended read: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/may/17/sevilla-monchi-liverpool-europa-league-final

Part of his scouting system assessment part:

Up the lift where a musak version of Sevilla’s anthem plays and along to his office, Monchi outlines the methodology. Outside, an agent is waiting; one of his players is renewing today. “It’s not easy to con this guy,” he jokes. Inside, Monchi explains: “Sixteen people cover a series of leagues. For the first five months we watch a lot of football but with no particular aim: we’re just accumulating data. Every month we produce an ideal XI for each league. Then in December we start watching players who appeared regularly in different contexts – home, away, international – to build the broadest possible profile.”

Monchi pulls out his phone and, carefully reducing the image so the names can’t be seen, says: “That gives us this.” A colour-coded spreadsheet shows players by position. Around 250 potential targets, in all positions. “The manager says: ‘I want a left-back who averages 11km a game, runs 800m at full speed, uses both feet.’ And from these, 10 will fit.”

If Monchi can't fix this club no one will. Simple as.

Monchi at the end of his conference today: "I'll leave you with a question: do you think I left after 20 years with Seville to come to Roma not to win?"

He didn't say anything new that was not already announced about a year ago. It is just media added their spin on it for drama. And Roma fans freaked out because they are still in denial that they will be Roma without Totti.

That's said I am glad it blew up like that. Everyone needs to move on including Totti himself.

In the meanwhile Totti had opened to a renewal of the contract as a player. Everyone knows it.
Totti giovedi da Costanzo: "Potrei continuare un altro anno. Terrei Spalletti, è il futuro"
The fact is that Totti is no more a champion but a burden while the hope is that Monchi will make Roma a winning club. :D I'm not saying the fans should lick Totti's arse forever but he is an icon of AS Roma and there is no doubt Monchi should have dribbled the question on Totti, since Totti is an icon while Monchi has just joined. BTW Monchi must be very careful with words in Rome.

There is nothing to see here. People are overreacting.

Gandini:
“We cannot blame Monchi for what he said during the press conference. He just confirmed what was already written on the official documents. Totti’s career as AS Roma player ends on June 30. After that date, he will start his career as a manager in this club. Totti is and remains an integral part of AS Roma."

I don't blame Monchi. I blame management. If the club and everyone else knew about this date, why have they avoided the issue and not properly honored him? Instead they leave it on the new guy to come out and say something. Very unceremonious, very poorly planned.

I am sure there is something planned at the end of the season. Why talk about it now? Monchi was asked a question and he answered honestly with what he thought every one known. FFS it was written in the official website in 5 different languages. The title can't be any more clear:

Official: Roma confirm Totti will play on for one final season
Official:*Roma confirm*Francesco Totti*will play on for one final season

For the record the club just celebrated Totti like a king
