Primera Liga - 2006/2007 [Jornada 1]

Real Madrid kick off the 77th Primera Liga season this weekend by hosting last season's Uefa Champions League semi-finalists Villarreal CF at El Santiago Bernabéu. Don Fabio Capello officially starts his second adventure in the Spanish capital after successfully guiding Madrid to the 1996/1997 Spanish title.

A host of players are set to make their league debuts for Real Madrid, including Emerson, Fabio Cannavaro, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Mahamdou Diarra, who is in great physical shape having started the French league with champions Olympique Lyon.

Ronaldo is to continue his rehabilitation programme at Real Madrid City's Valdebebas complex and will not feature in this game.

Villarreal are coming off a busy close season in the transfer market, adding Zaragoza winger Cani, Robert Pires and Turkish International Nihat Kahveci to their ranks. They've also managed to retain the nucleus of last season's success: Gonzalo Rodriguez, Roman Riquelme and Marcos Senna.

Not much to speculate about Capello's team selection, most of the team picks itself, with question marks over two positions. Raúl is expected to be preferred over Robinho, and Salgado is likely to be preferred to Cicinho.

Probable line-up;

---------------Casillas--------------
--Salgado-S.Ramos-Cannavaro-Carlos
------------Diarra--Emerson---------
------Beckham--Raúl--Cassano------
-------------v.Nistelrooy------------

If Capello persists with this nonsense then that will be unforgiveable.
You have to accept that Capello is the decision maker. If he wants to bench whomever, he will. We can all be coaches, but in the end it's him who decides. Maybe his tactic will work who knows, but Villarreal have apparently never beaten us in La Liga.

I am happy with everything except Beckham and Salgado. Cicinho-Robinho is what the fans want to see, and hopefully we will get that in the 2nd half.

I don't think Capello trusts Robinho, I think he sees him more of an impact player coming off the bench to spark our offensive game.

I think Capello is more than happy to approach most games in a conservative fashion, meaning Robinho will start a lot of games on the bench this season. :( I hope his genius will shine through as soon as possible so that either Beckham or Raul are benched for him.

This is the difference between the desiderable and the probable XI.

When R9 will return, I guess that Cassano could be benched and R7 put it on the left side.

That was what Capello did 10 years before with Suker, Mijatovic and Raúl. Putting Redondo and Seedorf behind. Who was your right winger then? I don't remember.

To be honest, Robinho has done nothing in both Carranza games. He starts to make nonsense bicycles in the middle of the pitch.

He was too predictable there. Tactical foul by Betis/Villareal and attack finished.

He harms deffenses near the attacking area, not creating attack with the ball in his feet 40 meters away from the goalkeeper.

In some way, it's the same situation that happened with Raúl last years, as nobody creates, he has to go to the midfield for the ball. And there, is no longer a problem for defenses.

Would you not rather wait to see how the team does first, if we go out and win then there should be no problem keeping any player on the bench. Robinho still has a bit to learn, his decision making is not the best and that is not the type of player Capello likes so it would be no surprise to me if he is a bench player this season until he matures a bit.

Why do you want Raul benched, he has been good this pre season and we have yet to see how he does in competitive games. I still think its Ronaldo which was the problem with Raul, both there style of plays are the complete opposite. When Ronaldo was out injured, Raul's form improved, lets see how the team does first before we start calling for people to be benched.

No, I don't need to wait and see what the team does first. Salgado is not better than Cicinho, and Beckham is not better than Cicinho either. What is there to see? It's as clear as daylight, neither Beckham nor Salgado can even clean the boots of Cicinho.

My opinion of Raul is that he should start the season on the bench. It's unfair, he has underperformed for the best part of 3 years so why shouldn't Robinho be given the benefit of the doubt? It's only because Capello trusts Raul more.

I am not worried about Salgado, because as soon as we sign a CB he is going to the bench and Ramos to RB.

In the end, once the squad is closed, we will see three main battles for positions this season.

Cicinho vs Beckham

Raul vs Robinho

Ronaldo vs Van Nistelrooy

6 players, 3 spots.

How do you know Salgado will start? What happens if Raul scores one Beckham creates two, are you still going to call for them to be benched? Cicinho has a shot to get on infront of Beckham but I think he will start as RB. Ronaldo has no chance over Ruud and Robinho will most likely remain as a bench player until he matures a bit and works on his end product.

Robinho is not on infront of Raul because Raul is more of a team player. Raul has played well this pre season. Robinho holds onto the ball for too long, he hits stupid shots, he tries to many step overs when a simple pass would have been the best option. If you look at Capellos track record he doesn't like players like this.

Because he has started all the pre-season games.

Unless Capello was wasting time on purpose, he will start.

Or unless we get a new CB early this week or Woodgate plays.

I always want Capello to play the players on form, my problem with Beckham and Raul is that they are preferred to others even when they are playing like shit.

If they play well, I have no problem with them.
