Real Betis interim coach Juan Merino does not believe Gareth Bale's absence will impact Real Madrid when they visit Estadio Benito Villamarin in La Liga on Sunday.

Madrid forward Bale was taken off at half-time during their 5-1 win over Sporting Gijon because of a calf problem and is reportedly set for up to three weeks on the sidelines.

The injury deprives Madrid of a player who has netted 13 goals in 17 appearances this season.

However, Merino - whose side are winless in their last 10 games in all competitions - feels the loss of the Wales international will not affect Madrid's performance.

"In Madrid you take away one [player] and put in another who is equal," Merino said. "They will continue to be the same team because they have the same quality.

"We have worked with great intensity. The draw at Villarreal [last Saturday] has helped convince us that, if we do things right, we are closer to victory than defeat.

"Above all we have to try to make Madrid uncomfortable. We have to play an outstanding game to win."

Since taking over after Pepe Mel was sacked by Betis, Merino has overseen a 4-0 thumping at the hands of arch rivals Sevilla in the Copa del Rey and the goalless stalemate with Villarreal.

That dreadful run of fom has left Betis only five points above the relegation zone. With Betis having not beaten Madrid since 2012 and lost the last two encounters between the sides 5-0, the hosts will be firm underdogs.

Madrid's form has predictably been in stark contrast to that of Betis - the visitors are unbeaten in their last five having scored 25 goals, although the 2-2 draw with Valencia earlier this month marked the end of Rafael Benitez's spell in charge of the club.

Zinedine Zidane's appointment as Benitez's replacement appears to have invigorated Madrid, the Frenchman's reign starting with a 5-0 defeat of Deportivo La Coruna and the subsequent demolition of Sporting.

Despite those results, Zidane's men are still third in the table and four points adrift of Liga leaders Atletico Madrid.

Madrid have scored the most goals away from home this term, netting 18 times on their travels in the league.

Betis - having conceded 28 goals so far - have a better defensive record than the other teams near the bottom of the league but, even without Bale, it is tough to envisage the hosts stopping Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema from continuing the strong start to Zidane's tenure.

We need to continue winning, HALA MADRID!

It's going to be tough to win without our best player (BALE) but I think we'll be able to manage some how...

This is Zizou's first away match in charge of Madrid. Betis is currently nothing but a mess .
After releasing Pepe mel for the second time ,the board appointed Juan Merino in charge of the team only as a care taker.

Both Barca and Atleti were involved in mid-week Copa Del Rey action but earlier today Barca managed to win the whole three points away in La Rosaleda stadium against Malaga which to me was a very unfair result to malaga . Messi rescued the team with a superb goal.

We had a full week of rest and GB11 is our only absentee.

Real Betis have failed to score in their last 6 matches in La Liga.

At home Betis is the worst team in the league .

Anything but a win is just a tragedy

Tomorrow evening, at 8.30pm CET, Real Madrid play Betis in LaLiga at the Benito VillamarĂn in Seville. Having recorded two impressive wins so far in his reign as Madrid coach (5-0 against Depor and 5-1 against Sporting) Zinedine Zidane looked relaxed as he came out for his pre-match press conference.

Colombian star James, and Zidane’s angry reaction to his refusal to warm-up in the game against Sporting, was one topic that came up early on, with the French legend keen to play down any issues: “James had a great week. I’m happy with what he’s doing. He’s working incredibly hard, like the other players. He’s ready to play”.

Zidane continued, saying he wasn’t worried in the least about the Colombian: “I’m not paying him more attention than the other players. I don’t get the feeling he’s worried, he’s told me he’s relaxed about things. He wants to do well, like the rest. The plan is to have him firing on all cylinders”.

In terms of other players, Zidane said Ramos wouldn’t be travelling to Seville for the match, despite working hard all week. “There’s no doubt he’ll be back next week”, said the Real Madrid coach.

Asked about tomorrow’s opponents Zidane said he thought it would be a “tough match. “For Betis, like the other sides, it means a lot to play against Real Madrid”. The Frenchman said he wanted his side to “play like they did in the first half against Sporting”, where they had scored five by the 41st minute mark. “Concentration” is key, according to the former midfielder.

With Real Madrid facing a two window transfer ban, the talk of strengthening the squad came up, but Zidane said he saw no need to bring players in, confirming he was happy with his squad at the moment. Equally he didn’t foresee any players leaving, in particular Nacho, who he said he wanted to have with him.

The French coach also confirmed he was working on the squad’s fitness: “They are getting better every week, looking at the data”.
