Sorry if i'm posting this here but I see no better forum to do it on since you Milanistas would be the most unbiased, who would you rate higher and why?

Rui went to Milan a bit older, i would say with his best years behind him whereas Kaka won the player of the year with Milan.
I think they're both great players but you're the ones that can have the most unbiased oppinion.

Your insight would be appreciated.

Rui Costa had a better footballing brain imho. Kaka is quicker but Rui Costa is more stylish. One of my favorite players, he was.

Obviously. I think on the ball whilst dribbling, there is NO ONE I like to see more than Rui Costa.

Effortlessly glides past players. Amazing smoothness.

But this thread is in the Milan forum so I assume we are to judge Rui at Milan, which of course was always hot and cold. If I recall correctly it took him 2 years to score his first Serie A goal for Milan.

I still remember the celebration where he was lifted up by all his teammates :proud: Milan 2006 was my favorite Milan team of all :hopeful:

His first goal wain in UEFA cup in the very first season he joined us. It was from a free kick. It was against a Zionist club.

..Was that the goal against Brescia? I remember him scoring a great goal for your lot against Brescia.

Nope, it was against Ancona actually. A freekick which crashed off the crossbar... For the massive transfer fee paid, and with him being an established offensive player when he signed for Milan, my criticism for him was his goal (lack of  ) output. Wikipedia recorded his goal tally with Milan as 30, though I can only recall him scoring max 10 goals...

Back to the question: Kaka on one leg is still better than Rui Costa.

The goal I was talking about:

The problem with Rui Costa at Milan was that he couldn't score goals.

Which is a pretty big shortcoming when you're an AM, no matter how good playmaker you are. So it wasn't a big problem for Kaka to steal his first eleven place as he brought an extra dimension in our attack which we surely needed at that point.

Don't think he even scored 10, maybe 5. I think vs Brescia was his first Serie A goal, but he did score in Coppa before that I think.

Rui Costa had his best season before he joined us. In his last season in Fiorentina he had the highest average rating of all players, higher than Zidane. I think he suffered a bit because we changed managers in his first season here. In fact Pirlo had better perfoemances than him when he got to play. Season after that we brought in Rivaldo and season after that Kaka. I would say he may have been the best first choice substitute we ever had those coming years.

If only we could return to having a competent management like then.

How far to fall in such a short space of time.

If the question is who I would pick at the top of their games, I'd pick Kaka. But at the top of their games, I would easily sacrifice a striker to accomodate both players in the same team.

Marvelous player Rui Costa was, particularly before he came to Milan

never did understand why berlusconi put pressure on ancelotti to stop the xmas formation when you were playing some of the best footie around to put in another striker

I enjoyed watching Rui far more than Kaka.

That said, even if I was never Kaka's biggest fan, the man was able to put the team behind his back like few have wearing the rossonero shirt. Kaka is faster, more determined, delivers (unlike Rui, who was an absolute choke), and has a real eye for goal.

In passing and making the game fluid and beautiful, Rui clearly takes the pick. I only take Zidane over him in grace of the game out of players in the last 15 years, more so than the divin codin.

Comparing their times at Milan and Kaka wins any comparison by a mile. However, compare overall career and I think they are close. Rui was really quick in the mid to late 90s. Watch him with Portugal and you'll be surprised how fast he was. As for scoring, Rui scored a fair total for a central mid although not all that many. At Milan he was kind of jinxed. Kaka was always half playmaker half second forward, IMO, plus he took a lot of PKs.

 What a combo. :strong:

Even though I said in my previous post I prefer Rui's style of play I miss the old Kaka, the one in his first few years of being at Milan. Not as elegant as Rui Costa, but when in full flight there was something graceful about the way he ran with the ball, in a high-octane sort of way. His trademark long distance shooting too, which had just enough curve and plenty of power. Kaka played beautifully in his own way. Not so much in his final seasons though.
