Germany are playing with no defensive midfielders...

How is that for "change"...that is quite simply awesome...
Well the Aussies structure was completely crap thanks to a poor coach...they looked lost, especially in defence. I dont see Germany playing this against a better team who is well organised. Nonetheless, that is a surprise.

I would have thought that in such a formation, DN would have lined up on the left side but reading stories this is not the case. Based on that proposed line up, i reckon it will revert back to a 4-4-2 very easily with pepe dropping to the right of the midfield, marchisio to the left, and DDR and Montolivo in the middle. IQ and Gila obviously the forwards.

Please don't mention Germany - they were playing a team who fielded a side without a single striker, and who played a high defensive line with offside trap despite probably having the slowest defence in the tournament.

Germany were impressive, but Australia, and more importantly that fraud of a coach Verbeek made the Germans look good.

The expected formations according to today's edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport:

FORZA ITALIA!

It will be interesting to see how that formation is actually played. It looks more like a 4231 or 442 to me than a 433, but we shall see.

Btw, that is not a dreadful starting 11 actually :)

The intensity of our game will be decisive because if we don't outplay Paraguay by keeping them in their half of the pitch I can see us suffering badly in defense. Chiellini will be likely "wasted" on Roque SC because he is the one who is tall enough to do that, while God knows how we will control Valdez and Barrios.

In actuality the formation looks more like this:

-------------------------Buffon--------------------------

Maggio/Zambo-----Cannavaro--------Chiellini--------------
---------------------------------------------------Criscito
----------------De Rossi----Montolivo---------------------
-----------------------------------<----Marchisio----->--
------Pepe-----------------------------------------------
--------------------Gilardino-------------Iaquinta----------

I heard that Criscito is now rumoured to start at left back. The above could be a 433, 442 or a 4231 by moving players around. Lippi has said he wants a fluid system. He knows that on paper the team is not that strong so he really needs to be able to have a flexible tactical set up and a compact group of players.

Interestingly, the average age of the outfield players in that group is just over 27 which isn't as old as people thought it would be. Only 4 of those players would have been in the WC06 squad.

Don't get me wrong, I am not being optimistic but I think I know what he is thinking

I cannot believe Lippi thinks Pepe > Di Natale.
eh eh eh

why not? Pepe is juventino!

No, seriously, I just think that Pepe and Iaquinta give to Lippi that amount of hard work which allows Lippi to keep 3 forwards and a balanced team.

I can't believe that Pepe has become such an important player both to become a starting player of the NT and a player of Juventus, but maybe I'm underrating him or simply I'm underrating the crisis of Italian football.
