Once again Wenger has amazed us all with this new relatively unknown footballing genius! Jose is looking a fine player already, he will be even better in my opinion once he makes the full transition from winger to center forward, just like Henry! Its an interesting tactic Wenger uses, buying a winger and converting them to a striker but it seems to work very well!

Watching Reyes is becoming a pleasure, as he plays with such pace and skill. He also has a great enthusiasm and a hunger which i havent havent seen for a while, this lad will become a great player!

At last, all over the summer everyone was saying Ronaldo over Reyes, now we've seen him adjust, i'd take Jose any day!

We should all be very excited, the future looks bright!

I wouldn't agree that he was relatively unknown, the Spanish have been raving about him for three years now, but at least we got him and we can turn him into a great striker, good to see he seems to be being trained as a carbon of Henry but on the right side, in both matches he played upfront he has been getting out onto the right wing a lot, this will make our right side much stronger.

he will be great, Raul better pull his socks up or he could be losing his place in the NT. :D

Relatively unknown? Anyone who had followed La Liga would had paid attention to this guy since 2 or 3 years ago... in fact, Arsenal paid Reyes as a star, not as a promising player. In any case, I'm happy to see him doing great. Few Spanish players have done well abroad lately and Reyes seems to have a brilliant future.

The Spanish press have anounced that Luis Aragonés will bring him back to the NT and he may be convocated in mid August for a freindly match against Venezuela.

Yesterday he was brilliant... C. Ronaldo vs Reyes? Reyes is better for me, without a doubt.

yea, he defiently wasnt unknown. for example i was buying him in CM eversince i started playing the game.

i was just happy we got him, even for that price. to me it was always going to be a big spainish club like barca or RM to sign him, but when we got him, i was dam happy ;)

i really think arsenal is not only a squad of today, but of tommorow. tommorow we have players such as VP, reyes, cesc, ali, flamini, clichy, pennant. all great players now, even better in the future and will be key players to arsenal and to their respective nations.

Perhaps Madrid was more interested, since Barça already had Ronaldinho in his possition, but none of them would have paid so much for Reyes. I am not going to say he isn't worth what you paid, but Arsenal did a really strong bet for this player, very risky.

If you watch the signings of Barça, Barça have bought players who's prices were below the 10 million € and only more for Deco and perhaps Eto'o (African Gold Ball). Real Madrid pay this amounts more often, but only for huge stars, not for players that didn't show their level in big tournaments yet.

I think that he's happy there, he has been brave to accept the challenge of playing in Arsenal. Many Spanish players fear to go to foreign clubs. I'm happy to see that the Spanish players chose the EPL rather than Serie A. I think it's better for our skills. It will be good for our NT, Reyes will keep his class and he will learn a lot there.

we are only sure to pay around ÂŁ8m for Reyes, the other ÂŁ8m will only be payed on performance so the deal is good because if we end up paying the full ÂŁ16.9m that would mean we will have won a CL.

and i don't think this was much of a risk, Steve Rowley watched him 60 times and Wenger around 15 times, they knew everything there was to know about the player, when you think we will definitely be able to sell him back to La Liga if he fails for probably ÂŁ8m because of his big reputation the risk is very minimal.

we have Cesc who precedes Reyes in that risk
and he'll also be a great players in 2 or 3 years

Fair point, he was hardly an unknow player, but he was hardly a household name! I'd heard of him before in Champo but had never seen him play before until he came to Arsenal He was one of the rising stars of Spanish football, such as Torres, Joaquim therefor his name was floating around for a while!

I still cant believe Reyes didnt go to Euro2004, he might have been the spark that spain needed, a great sub at least! I guess we'll never know! I'm kinda glad he didnt get picked, it aloud him to have his first pre-season in England and prepare for the new season the right way! With Vieira looking like he's off, we may have found a new key player for years to come!
I have to say also, that, at the moment he doesnt look like a risk at all! He looks as if he is enjoying himself, he's having a great pre-season, - player of the tournment at Ajax, MOTM yesterday and a handful of goals! He looks awesome at the moment, i hope it continues!

While i've been reading some of the posts in this forum, i have to say, i think some of you are over-hyping Jeremie Aliadiere a wee bit! He's had quite a few chances now in the first team, and so far, i dont think he's been all that impressive! I cant see him becoming a first team regular, he'll be off in a season or two! Maybe he should have been loaned out this season to see what he can do! It seems now he's going to miss half the season with a new knee injury too!

In Spain, he was a household name. I know that the Brittish tabloids only talk about the affairs of fotballers and its directors but trust me, everyone in Spain and those who follow La Liga knew about Reyes.

Apparently the only clown that didn't know about Reyes was Saez

I don't think Vicente and Luque are worse than Reyes, but perhaps the sevillano was more fresh since he didn't play as many matches as the other 2 guys. In any case, the problem of the Spanish NT wasn't in the left wing and Vicente is over Reyes, IMO. Perhaps I would have chosen Reyes because he also could play as striker, but in his possition we had 2 good options too. If I had to chose 2 players among Vicente, Reyes and Luque, I'd chose Vicente and I'd have my doubts between the other two.

That Saez didn't pick Reyes was outregous. What does a guy have to do in order to make it to the NT?

Reyes can play anywhere and he showed it yesterday. Reyes for Raul with Vicente and Joaquin flanking him with Moro up top and Saez might still be the coach;)

I knew Josè Antonio Reyes for few seasons. And he was a good young player when he was still in Sevilla.

The first time I heard that Wenger interested about this kid is two seasons ago and I started to read some good things about him. However the club president put a very expensive price tag on him. At the first time, I thought it was just merely story made up by some football website as I myself thought that such player would go to some Spanish giants like Real or Barça instead of Arsenal. Finally we find out that the story is true. His action last season ago which is memorable to me is his destruction of Real Madrid. Even Zidane sighed and could do nothing, but praised him.

I agree that it is a strong bet to bring such young player in high price. But this is not the first time Wenger made such bet. He made some big transfers and not everyone of them are playing to the standard Wenger expected like Wiltord and Jeffers. But he did also spend more than £10 millions to bring Henry, who is currently Arsenal best player, here. However, most of his best signings are made below £10 millions. Even Tourè only costed us few hundreds.

I think there're reason why Wenger made such decision to sign big in second transfer window when the club is just starting to tighten their expenses due to new stadium project. It's probably because he knew it that Reyes is going to be world class player with his talent and he is trying to snub him before he is getting 'bigger' and invite some big clubs come to sign him. And now we are surely assured that it's actually good investment.

no, we got him for anything from ÂŁ10.6m to ÂŁ16.9m, our first down payment was ÂŁ7.1m then we have to pay another instalment of ÂŁ3.5m sometime into his contract, then the rest of the fee of ÂŁ6.3m is dependant on appearances and performance, if Jose plays 120 games we have to pay some more, the rest is linked to goals and titles, if we win CL and he plays all the games and scores goals and we win other titles we will pay the full amount , the total fee will probably fall somewhere in between, perhaps ÂŁ15m.

Reyes over Luque anyday. Simply more natural talent. Better dribbler also and that's one of the most important things when playing as a winger. Plus Reyes is a pretty good crosser.
The problem is that he had this skills with Vicente and Luque gave him other options. Luque tends to score more easily, his free kicks are really good and he could be a striker too. Reyes is quite similar to Vicente.

partly agree with you there, but i think Vicente is more an out and out winger/wide forward while Reyes can play at 10 (so can Vicente but Reyes is more natural at it), a striker AND as a winger/wide forward.
I really love Vicente though, he really impressed me in EC2004.
