Ferguson to bolster defence

Sir Alex Ferguson produced the perfect Christmas present for Manchester United by agreeing a fee with Spartak Moscow for highly-rated Serbia & Montenegro defender Nemanja Vidic.

The 24-year-old Vidic has become one of the most sought-after players in Europe after informing the Russian side of his intention to quit the club during next month's transfer window.

„I am delighted the two clubs have come to an agreement,” said Ferguson. „Nemanja is a quick, aggressive centre-half and at 24 will be a terrific addition to the squad.”

Although Champions League holders Liverpool and Serie A outfit Fiorentina both expressed an interest in the centre-back, United were able to pull off the coup.

The fee remains undisclosed, but it is believed to be around the ÂŁ7million mark. Vidic will now fly into Manchester to discuss personal terms and have his medical, both of which appear to be formalities.

Providing there are no unforeseen hitches, Vidic is likely to be signed in time to play in the FA Cup tie at non-league Burton on January 8, with his first Premiership appearance coming in the following weekend's Manchester derby at Eastlands.

Vidic, who joined Spartak from Red Star Belgrade in July 2004, has seen his reputation soar after being an integral part of his national side's 'famous four' defence, which conceded just one goal in qualifying as the Eastern Europeans bagged a place at next summer's World Cup.

His arrival at Old Trafford will be widely welcomed as many supporters have pointed to a glaring weakness in central defence as one of the major reasons for the problems which have afflicted the Red Devils this season.

With Mikael Silvestre looking increasingly uncertain in recent weeks and Wes Brown's poor record with injuries counting against him, Ferguson needs a regular partner to bring the best out of Rio Ferdinand, who has too often dropped below the standard expected of a ÂŁ30million player.

Good move. Vidic will be given every oppurtunity to succeed at United with the problems they had defensively this year, particularly with Silvestre. Vidic himself has every tool to succeed at ManU and in the EPL. I fully expect him to establish himself as one of the best defenders in shortime. Good move for both sides. Plus, since Canadian channels love ManU and the EPL, I should be able to watch a lot of his games.

Can anybody describe vidic main attributes, and is he quick?
Well, he's something like an undeveloped Dejan Stefanovic, he has a bit more to learn. I'd say he's as fast as Slavisa Jokanovic, who had a great career in Chelsea.

Andrija, my username has inspired many generations on XT, what else can I say... :D

This news is well received by me personally, since here in Ontario we get a lot EPL coverage. I'll be looking forward to watching Nemanja play in one of the best clubs in the world. He always talked about how he wanted to compete at higher levels, well I'm afraid now he has hit the ceiling, you can't really advance your career any further after playing for a club like Manchester United. This is his chance to shine and I fully believe that in the next few years the name "Vidic" will become a household name in football.

Yeah man, for example I just saw on TV that on the TSN ticker they actually have under "Soccer", Nemanja Vidic agreeing on a deal with Man UTD..

Red Bed, this fellow is one of the best things to come out of Serbian soccer for a long time..When he is in the back, you just feel so damn safe because not many can really do anything against him..

I'll never forget his debut for our nt against Italy in Rome, for the EC 04 qualifiers. Man, here was a no-namer from the Serbian league going up against the likes od Del Piero, Totti, Vieri, Inzaghi etc. and guess what? He completely shut them all down, afterwards he received man of the match honours..When I saw this appearance of his I knew that this guy was special.
