Hardly a full strength team, was it?

No Valencia, Vidic or Cleverley due to injury. Then not selecting Carrick, Scholes, Nani, Ferdinand or Welbeck.

DDG

Jones (Rafael maybe)
Ferdinand
Vidic
Evra

Valencia
Carrick
Cleverley/Scholes
Nani

Rooney
Welbeck

That's United's full strength team. 4 of them started last night.

Of course the Europa League isn't the highest of priorities but Ferguson wanted to win and still wants to go through. Of course the buck stops with him as to why we've failed in Europe this season and you'd hope he'd address that during the summer, but that's a different discussion for a different day.

As for Evra becoming a liability, he's been a liability for the past 18 months or so, maybe even longer. It hasn't been a dip in form for a while, he's well and truly past it, nowhere near the player of 07-09. We need to do something about the LB position, but then we need to do something about the midfield as well, and maybe up top with Berbatov and Owen on the way out.

You can't really say he only fielded 4 of his full strength side through choice. If you have injuries then those players are not available. Therefore it is possible some of the players who played were first choice at the time, ie the strongest in their position currently available.

Yes, but I'm pointing out that we're still struggling with injuries.

I've also pointed out that it still wasn't a full strength team - those available - because Ferdinand, Carrick, Scholes, Nani and Welbeck were not selected.

So the bottom line is, it wasn't a full strength team.

It was ofcourse not a full strength team but why play such a weak lineup, if he wanted to give others chance he should have rested Rooney too. Why play Rooney or Evra? Berba or Fabio should have been given a chance. Either he should played a full strength team or reserve and bench team.
Even thoug if Fergie tried to balance things by excepting Rooney to create magic and not completely ignoring this tie and also giving priority for EPL by resting/not starting Nani,Scholes, Rio and Carrick, it was a absurd plan and obviously backfired. Than again I really cant blame him totally as injuries have really screwed us this season and players have been inconsitent with their form.

To come back to the thread topic. Evra has become Evrage (see what I did here) nothing more, nothing less. Evrage Defender, Evrage going forward, Evrage crosser. He's got good dribbling skills and he's funny. His biggest attribute is pissing off Liverpool fans.

He ain't got it no more. Yeah, I am a bit bitter but he's been ****ing up a lot. That FA loss still hurts.

:D Maybe you should also ask Neville to come out of retirement.

In the last couple of years he's been mostly average, I agree. He has the odd great game like against Arsenal but they are becoming very rare.

However as Ronaldowho said, he's better than Fabio - so apart from when he gets rested (he should get a rest once in a while, as he's the only one that doesn't get rotated much), he should play.

The Main issue is Evra's defending. Because of his shit defending, We have conceded a LOT of goals this season (game against chelsea, last mintues goal by Dirk Kuyt in FA cup etc..)

His poitioning has been shite. Although attacking wise, his runs remain quite good. But he should realise that he is a defender first.

He is not the captain, it's Vidic. The fact that he's injured, who else should become one?

Neither Giggsy nor Ferdinand start every match, even though they are ahead of Evra in the pecking order - so they rightly didn't get it.

I would say it was always going to be between either Evra or Rooney.

Yep, he is declining but its only natural, the guy has been playing at a freakish level for the best part of 5 years, never being rested, at times carrying our whole threat on the left. Immense player for us and no real shock he's slowing down as he's entering his 30s.

If a top left back(very rare) is avaliable we'll probably go for him in the coming few transfer windows, harsh on Fabio but the lad is too unreliable fitness wise. Still has a future at United though due to his versatility across defence and can also cover out wide midfield and in the middle.

Ashley Cole has declined just as much as Evra, if not more. Nowhere near as dominant as he was previously. Our wingers have raped him in recent games for example, whilst before he more often than not had a great game against United.

Ramos is a CB/RB and he's nowhere near as good as his rep.

Marcelo has improved drastically, whilst Lahm is class - I'll give you that.

Not sure if serious Piyali.

Basically most of what Drito said. but Lahm is about 3 years younger than Pat Evra, so obviously he should be at his peak now but would be an extremely short term signing if say, United tried to sign him.

Marcelo was a little kid 5 years ago, he's now 23. And he's still a brainless tool btw.

He ain't a world beater but still it's encouraging for Madrid that he has actually improved.

But overall as you said on your initial post, there's not many players around who you could say are world class/could be world class in this position.

Aren't we a spoilt lot? Cannot believe we are discussing about getting rid of Evra. He may not be as good as our center backs, but in his position easily one of the best. He is getting older, and hence slower, so he will have a tough time against pacy wingers. I will give him time though. So far, despite his unbelievably inaccurate crosses, I am happy with his overall performance.

such is the poor state of LB position in today's world that Evra is till called one of the best LBs:doh: and being slow is not his problem dude cant position himself well, damn even that dino Zanetti is better than him defensively, well than Zanetti defensively is fantastic.
Though that day he played well vs West Brom. Damn whenever I open a thread to bash a player mother ****er gives a good performance to make me look like a deluded idiot:mad:

He's a freak of nature who has played 50+ games for past few seasons. Defending was never his strongest point. Although I don't remember being this frustrated by him in his early days! A lot of our attacking play goes through him and let's face it, apart from scoring and assisting he's superb at it.

Guy deserves a rest, and some recognition.
