Is Cristiano Ronaldo a good dribbler?

Cristiano is a fantastic player but would you say he was a good dribbler?

I've been watching him since he first came to Man Utd and despite all of his 'tricks' I've never really been impressed with his dribbling.

I've never seen him go on mazy runs past two or three players using close control. He's more of a player who relies on speed to kick the ball past a player and run after it. He also has trouble changing direction whilst running at speed. ie his balance is not great.
He is good at static dribbling but on the run he's nothing special. Unlike Ronaldinho his tricks rarely lead to anything and seem to ruin attacking momentum, they also look forced and not executed properly.

I'm not posting this as a dig at him, he has great speed to get behind defenders, has a very powerful shot and is great in the air. However his dribbling is overrated by fans.

I think this lack of dribbling ability also costs him awards like the Ballon D'Or.

Off the top of my head I would say the following are far better dribblers:
Messi (obviously)
Robben
Iniesta
Hazard
Ribery
D Silva
Aguero
Tevez

Ronaldo is a good dribbler in his own right, but I wouldn't say great. Mainly due to his physical build and stature standing above average height.

The players the op mentioned may be better dribbler's and may have more close ball control but their low center of gravity and balance gives them the upper hand in this department.

Also to add what cost Ronaldo a second ballon d'or is Messi.

Oh I guess I didn't know that you narrowed the term "dribbling" to having a couple of mazy runs, and excluded the other technical aspects of the dribble including an effective "stepover".:err:
Ruud Van Nistlerooy had a brilliant run and goal(against Totenham), better than the other ones you posted, so how great of a dribbler was he?

Nevertheless, you might want to check out Ronaldo's goal with Man Utd against Fullham or even more recently his disallowed goal against Spain which imo were just as good.

How about you post a clip of either Kaka or Henry "breaking the ankles" of a top defender like Ashley Cole with a fine inward stepover sending Cole one direction and eventually falling on his a$$... I can post that clip if you would like. I mean if you want to take that route;)

Van Nistelrooy's goal was better? :dielaugh:
That was a one off, he has never displayed that level again.

That Ronaldo chop is more about agility than good ball control. Ronaldo is good on one on ones when he has plenty of space and no other defenders behind but beating defender after defender with surging runs he is not so good at. At momentum dribbling Kaka and Henry were better. Kaka especially once he got moving was difficult to stop.

He's probably third best on Real Madrid, with Marcelo and Di Maria being the clear top 2.

omg what a stupid argument.
as if Messi doesnt rely on speed to beat defenders :howler:

Its not the speed thats impressive, its the ball control, also known as DRIBBLING.

Once he gets to his Madrid days you see Cronnie dribbling more with a tactical purpose. He may not change directions as quick as Messi, but the the guy can freakin dribble

I suppose Maradona's goal against England isn't all that either because he's "basically" running in a straight line.

[I both play football and teach football technique]

Cristiano Ronaldo is an excellent dribbler.

There are many dribbling styles and techniques.

When training a player in dribbling technique, you have to utilise the strengths of the player - is he fast? Is he strong? Does he have a strategic football brain, an awareness of space and of players around him? Does he have excellent ball control? Can he execute ball skills/tricks under pressure to beat his opponent?

One player may have no football brain, but have the physical attributes to run past 3 or more players. Moreover, someone may lack pace, but their dribbling technique more than compensates for it.

It would be naive and wrong to call Cristiano Ronaldo a poor dribbler. His dribbling technique and style is very effective. He capitalizes on his natural abilities to the maximum, plus, add all the hard work he does on the training ground perfecting his technique... and the end result? An excellent dribbler.

There are other effective dribbling styles and technique. I could post endless YouTube videos of Zidane, Messi, Riquelme or Kaká - all beating their man in different styles and techniques.

Lionel Messi - the #1 dribbler in the world.

Why?

- Near-perfect balance
- Master at feinting
- Underated strength
- Turn speed and agility
- Acceleration with ball
- Spatial awareness
- Awareness of opponent's position and movement
- Awareness of team mate's position and movement
- Quick feet
- Close ball control standing and running with the ball
- Decision making

thing with maradona is that that run is not his only dribbling style. Even messi can sometimes run in a straight line. I dare anyone to find a ronaldo dribble which involves beating players. Not the stepover thing when static, or the kick it past the player and run

If by bear, you mean any one of certain posters in WFF; by shit, you mean the content of their posts; by woods, you mean XT; and by fluffy white rabbit, you mean common sense, the answer is obviously "hellllllllll yea".

3 pages and ronaldo's fan boys are yet to show us prove he dribbles. If you think kicking the ball and running past a player at full speed is dribbling maybe u are watching a wrong sport. Maybe u can check kinkladze youtube to see dribbling Dq6y3Cf8sBA
