Niko Kovac's side share a special bond with their next friendly opponents, and the two national teams will strengthen their bond further as they contest a warm-up game

Croatian Football Federation president Davor Suker says the Socceroos are the perfect final opponent for his nation before they open the World Cup against tournament hosts and favourites Brazil.

The Socceroos and Croatia will finalise their World Cup preparations with a friendly match in Salvador next Friday (Saturday morning AEST).

While the Socceroos have a tricky opening to their campaign a week later against Chile, the Croatians have an even bigger task with the likes of Neymar, Paulinho, Dani Alves and co awaiting them in Sao Paulo.

"We wanted a strong opponent for our final tune-up before we open the World Cup against Brazil and Australia is an excellent choice," Suker, the retired national team great, said.

"I am sure that football fans in Salvador will see an entertaining, intense and dynamic match with several world-class players like (Luka) Modric, (Ivan) Rakitic, (Mario) Mandzukic and (Tim) Cahill."

The clash is just as important for the new-look Socceroos, who need every warm-up game they can to work on their combinations before taking on Chile, Netherlands and Spain.

Injured skipper Mile Jedinak (groin) is hopeful of getting some game time in the match to ensure he's ready for the opening match of the tournament.

Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou will also want to get some game time into the likes of Mark Bresciano, Matthew Spiranovic and Tom Rogic.

"We are looking forward to our match with Croatia in Salvador," Postecoglou said.

"This will be our final match before the start of the World Cup and Croatia will offer us a tough test and help us with our preparations."

The Socceroos and Croatia of course have history at the World Cup, with the two nations famously meeting in the group stage in Germany in 2006.

It turned out to be a memorable night for the Socceroos, with Harry Kewell's late goal salvaging a 2-2 draw to send the Aussies to the round of 16 - at the expense of Croatia.

The two nations also have many links, with a host of former and current Socceroos having Croatian heritage, including Ivan Franjic, Dario Vidosic and Spiranovic in the current squad.

"We are looking forward to play again with Socceroos, our good football friends - there are many Croatians who played and coached in Australia, and there are several Australian-born Croatians who were a part of our national team," Suker said.

"Even though both teams have difficult groups at the World Cup, I hope we can meet again in the second round."

It's very great to see a beautiful thread like this one with pics, stats and quotes! That's awesome!! :)

In this match, i hope to see a different tactic and line-up from Kovac and drop Olic and Dudu from the wing! I want to see Perisic and Rebic there in the first half!

In this match for the first half, i want to see something like this.

Subasic

Vrsaljko---Corluka---Lovren---Vida
Modric
Vukojevic
Perisic---Rakitic---Rebic
Jelavic

And for the second half:

Subasic

Vida---Schifo---Lovren---Vrsaljko (Pranjic?)
Rakitic
Modric
Srna---Kovacic---Mandzukic
Eduardo

Hvala Dalmate! you are too kind. I too like the initial post for a match to be nicely presented like this. I will do my best to create match threads for all our WC games just like this one (except with the correct dates of course, it seems the link I used to get date etc was an Australian link doh!)

Australia actually try and play a possession and move style game, they obviously dont have the players to do this at the highest level. Cahill or Kennedy will most likely lead the line which means there will be crosses once the players get into the final third. They try and play out of the back but like i said, the players aren't skilful enough to execute the game plan at the highest level.

Should beat and outplay them comfortably but still see us copping a goal via a corner or free kick.

Subasic should play a full game, Modric i think will get a half, as will Rakitic. Lovren and Corluka will start at the back.

Ivan Franjić and Mile Jedinak wil be playing against their own blood :(

plus Vidosic, Spiranovic, Galekovic, Bozanic and ofcourse Bresciano is half Croatian :D

But out of all those Jedniak and Franjic will most probably be selected for the WC, Jedniak being the captain while the others have a good chance of also being selected.

We should just change the title to Croatia vs Croatia B team :D

...traitors

There is a local Croatian kid, in Oakville, that is tearing it up at the highest levels in Canada, and in tournaments abroad. He has already stated that if he keeps progressing he will play for Croatia... and there has been many conversations with his parents and teams in Europe. He is top rated player in Canada for his age (15).

:D

I will have a soft spot for Australia at the WC because of them.
Swizerland also because of Drmić and Gavranović.

Actually I am picking Switzerland as the darkhorse team of the tournament and will bet some money on them throughout the tourney.

It's always good to discover new potential gems for the NT. Would this be the same player?

Also, they've arrived in Brazil earlier than any other team. Postecoglou has emphasized greatly on fitness (who hasn't?) and has stated that he wants Australia to be the fittest team there. With their high pressure press and fitness levels it may be an ideal warm up for the Brazil game.

The 2015 Asia Cup is probably more important for Australia than this World Cup. I looked at the Australia squad and honestly I don't recognize half the team. That doesn't mean that the players aren't any good but it is a clear generational change going on where they are probably willing to sacrifice a bad World Cup (the draw didn't help!) for a good Asia Cup which they host and building a team for 4 years from now

They aren't very good at all. The defense is HNL quality at best. Spiranovic has failed to fulfill his potential, he's gone from Bundesliga to A League in a few seasons. Whilst technically gifted, he isn't very agile and is quite slow. He loses far too many duels for a player of his size and strength. He will start IMO alongside either McGowan or Wilkinson, 2 players who don't belong at international level.

If Postecoglou persists with a high line defense, much like what we saw vs Ecuador and South Africa, Australia will concede a lot of goals. They don't have the speed at the back to break up counterattacks, nor is the pressing game good enough to stop the opposition from playing through them.

In attack, Cahill is still a threat upfront in the air, but his legs are gone and he doesn't offer a threat in behind the line. Oar and Leckie are decent players, good pace, reasonable technique but the product in the final third lacks quality, hence why they don't play in the top leagues.

Plete
Srna-Corluka-Lovren-Pranjic
Vukojevic
Rakitic-Modric-Perisic
Eduardo-Rebic
i would just like to win so i have braging rights to aussies until next time :cap:

Hey all...I havn't posted posted in a while but dont worry i've still been reading your comments daily! Anyways...as for the Australia game...ill be watching it at Cafe Scorpio in Queens with a couple of friends. The owner said they'll have the game game in HD. This is the lineup i'd like Kovac to try out...i would like to see it against Brazil too

-Pletikosa-
-Srna-Corluka-Lovren-Vrsaljko-
-Perisic-Modric-Rakitic-Pranjic/Rebic
-Kovacic-
-Olic-

We have nothing to lose in the Brazil game so why not put our best midfield out there? I believe our midfield will dominate Brazil's. Pranjic is a LM and plays much better there...just a shame he now plays LB and his talents have gone to waste...he can put in good crosses. As for Rebic..hes young and explosive and we can really use that down the wing.

Modric and Rakitic will make Paulinho and Oscar look like little school girls.

Jelavic has been playing poorly...Eduardo had started scoring for Shaktar towards the end of the season which was good news..but he can't pressure Brazil's back line like Olic will (hopefully). I just wish we had Ibrahimovic :D
