Official A-League thread

I think its about time we probably got a thread going about the APL. All news and then further discussions regarding the new league shall go in here. Perhaps we should start with the recent news of the bids:

http://www.australiansoccer.com.au/public/article/show.asp?articleid=7772&menuItemID=

The Australian Soccer Association today announced that 12 consortiums would be vying for the eight positions available for the New National Competition which is set to kick off in July 2005.

Each of the seven locations nominated by the ASA as their preferred cities (Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane and Auckland) all had at least one submission while a group from the Central Coast also put in a bid.

Melbourne had the most interest with three separate bids received while Sydney and Brisbane each had two parties make a submission.

The ASA will now spend the next six weeks studying the bids and meeting with each of the interested parties. It is expected that the winning bids will be announced late August/early September once the ASA board has given approval.

"We are delighted with not only the number of bids received but the calibre of the people who want to be involved," said ASA Head of Operations Matt Carroll.

"It's looking very positive. There are some very impressive presentations and we now have the important task of looking more closely at each of the bids."

"We are pleased with the number we have and now it's a matter of looking more closely at the bids."

"We will be working hard to ensure that the bids meet the required standards we have set."

"Bids came in from all of our preferred areas and in the major markets of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne we have got some competitive tension which is a great result."

The ASA is continuing to meet with a range of broadcasters and potential major sponsors of the competition.

So Marconi finally noticed they can't compete with the corporate assholes and SoccerNSW? :rollani:

A team with such a huge club, a beautiful stadium and training facilities... Such a waste to have them playing in the NSW Premier League :groan:

A Central Coast team would be good though.. But I don't know how they'd get much support. It's a Rugby-supporting area, so the team would probably flop miserably..

I think the Soccer NSW team (Sydney FC) wuold be based out of Marconi Stadium and that could be the reason why Marconi proper didn't bid.
And anyway financially Marconi is the poorest club in Australia... mafiosas have run it aground...

I lived on the Central Coast for 11 years, its proberbly got the best home ground facilities in the new League.
Soccer has a huge amount of junior and Senior playing - its similar place like down in Geelong in Victoria.

IT COMES DOWN TO MARKETING AND EXPOSURE.
I hope they get a team and I will support them.

As for Marconi, for all the hard work done in the 70's-90's, it appears that there fate has been sealed, just like so many proud Clubs before.

It has been announced that Foxtel have secured the rights to the Australian Premier League for the first three seasons. They will show up to four live games a week and include pre and post game coverage and a highlights show.
That's great news!!! However if it's an 8 team comp then there will only be 4 games a week --- therefore all of the games will be live :D

dM - the official proposal includes Parramatta Stadium, my previous post suggested Marconi but that was incorrect.

i hope it wont be at parra and more of a central location so its easier for everyone to go to the games. i mean i would of gone to wtch games at parra, but the distance isnt good anot viable and worth it if you know what i mean.

if its more central in sydney, i would defiently go to the games (every single one) with a group of mates.

basically i think more central = more fans.

however i'd be going to the games anyway since school finishes for good for me this year, so i am free free free!!!

there was soemthing i heard about sydney soccer NSW having a really good board with some reknown people. does anyone know more information about this?

i dont remember to well, just watching the world game and they named some people part of that committee and i just went "wow, that is great." bu forgot the names :(

parra is pretty much the geographic centre of sydney

but the thing is, to get to the city i've gotta get a bus, then a train, then probably another bus or something..... to parra, im pretty sure everyone all over sydney can make it in one trip.

also, aussie stadium is 50,000 or something.... that is WAAAAAAAAAYYYYY too big for a club that can realistically only hope for 10,000.... we want a bit of atmosphere, and parra stadium can offer that without being too small

parra would only be good for people who live on the west side seriusly. imagine people from the beaches like cronulla? etc? that would take 2-3 hrs. even for me its 2hrs and i live about 15 mins from city..

just city would be a sacrifice and would be more even for everybody, even for people on the north shore. i never said to use aussie stadium. and i dont mean right smack bam in the city on the streets of george street.

just find a better location the parra.

btw, how on earth is parramatta middle of sydney?!?! THAT IS CALLED WEST SIDE!
Thats because the City of Sydney is on the coast pretty much. How close to the city is Nth Syd yet look at the name. If this was Melbourne (I'm not so sure on this one so Melbournians plz enlighten me) the city would be Parramatta which is geographically in the middle and the suburbs are built around it.

Ok well I live in the Castle Hill area and I go to UNSW right. It takes me about 1hour 30 if not more and Aussie stadium is roughly in the same area.

So what I can draw from this is that u want city because it suits you. If you live 15 minutes from the city then it would take u 1 hour to get to parra maybe a little more. Now imagine someone from Richmond trying to get to Aussie stadium

Its logical man if its the geographical centre of Sydney the majority of people will be better suited to it.

Anyway so wat do you guys think? I rekon NSW fed sounds better because I dont want a Nick Politis team. I mean I dun mind Harry Kewell being there but I if anything only want a Marconi connection :D I also think we should be looking at 20,000 crowds.

South don't deserve to be in the APL. When you can't set aside an amount for a rainy day after receiving over $5 million this is to be expected.

Stuff the APL anyway. Melbourne's "club" will more or less be a News Ltd owned wank (a la Melbourne Storm in the NRL) run by an ex Knights face. No thanks! Bring on the VPL I say.
