This thread is to track our athletes at the 2012 Olympics in London.

How many medals do you think we will win this time?

I am hoping for 10 golds :)

HAJRA MAGYAROK !!!

Yes, it's the average goal medal per 1 m population.

For example, if Hungary get 10 gold medals in the Olympics, that means we average 1 gold medal every 1 million people. For USA, they would need to get 300 gold medals to reach our level :)

we've had it forever.. it'll go back to our favour soon enough :) We are still the best sporting nation in the world :proud:

it is true

We are talking about the summer Olympics

Hungary - 159 gold medals with a population of 10,008,703 (2010 numbers by world bank) = 1.59

Sweden - 142 gold medals with a population of 9,379,116 (2010 numbers by world bank)
= 1.51

we win, yay.

less countries were competetive in those days too. plus the fact that there were many sports only commie countries took serious. or, maybe in other words, played with full pros under the camouflage of a fake amateur status. plus doping and stuff. even now, all sports we are good at in olympic games are sports only a handful people would watch. swimming being the only exception. it's all nice and fun seeing Hungary collecting some medals, but then again, I wouldn't overrate it.

Yeah thanks szövkap, I had to let off some steam last night with that bullspit. I've read a lot of conspiracy theories, got a little angry, got hammered, got a litte carried away, but I deleted it, so it's all good. I felt like a real man going to work today after I let off some steam, I haven't felt that good in years but have a major hangover. Sometimes when you read these theories, try booze, get angry and let off some steam, it usually works.

Can't wait for the Olympics to start, can't wait for water polo in action, hear some good soccer teams will be there too. The Olympics is always a time for rejoycing, I take the games seriously and really the only time I'll watch TV for hours. Water polo is going to be boffo man!

Getting medals during communism was because there was serious investment in sports. Just like there is serious money invested in athletes in sports in the US,. especially at college level. Or in China, today. It would be like saying that the US medals do not count - they have all the money. That would be silly. It just means that there is less organized effort in sports today in the former communist countries, mostly because of money and infrastructure neglect (human and material) - and that is bad.

That being said, I heard an official of the Hu Olympic committee saying that the realistic expectation is to get about the same number of medals as we got last time - which was low, compared to the past, and people were upset. But that's where we are.

What are the sports where you guys expect medals? Me:
Kayak/kenu
Swimming
Polo (men & women)

I am not saying gold, but some.

Also, at the recently ended European Championship in Szeged the Hungarian team ended with the highest number of medals/gold medals in the history of the swimming sport in Hungary!!! unfortunately, this does not automatically translate into Olympic gold, as so many times we have seen poor results before Olympics being transformed in gold there, or viceversa, but I really like those kids - from Kiss, to Gyurta, to the amazing watergirls.

it was held in Debrecen. Very exciting EC, I posted a link with all the vids where we won gold. Cseh Laci is my hero.

We are strong in swimming, but I don't see us winning anything anywhere else.. Maybe that gymnastics guy? I dunno, it's disappointing.. no track and field stars, no boxers, no weight lifting.. ugh.

I would not say that there is little competition. These are amazing sportsmen and -women: those handball players, waterpolo players, let alone kayak, kenu. For me, much more remarkable than some (or most) footballers, many of whom are just overpaid blokes on a field (see NB1).

I was listening to interviews with swimmers - my goodness, their life is brutal! Every day, from early age, waking up at 5, training early in the morning, then school, then more training, for years on end, every day... Amazing. But otherwise, given the quality of the competition, no way to get anywhere near the top.

And think that, meanwhile, these are not million-dollar-paid stars, but they do it for the sport, for the colors, for the nation, for themselves, and out of passion.

What I really like about European countries is that these sportpeople are really respected, and they become public heroes and role models. Like Egerszegi Krisztina.

Yes, although these are just kids, I have learned a lot just by listening to them talk about their life and work.

I'm not saying those that compete in these sports aren't incredible athletes, of course they are. I'm sure they are just as great in that sense as any focista, but still if they have less competition that makes a big difference. It's all relative. Being best out of 100 is not the same as best out of 1,000, regardless of how great of an athlete you are.

I also think that representing your country works likes this regarding the amount of people paying attention. That's why the best example of doing that in sports is the World Cup.

expect 5 gold medals in swimming..water polo..canoe/kayak, fencing..this will be the best olympics for Hungary since atlanta..everyone swims so there is competition there. We are the greatest swimming nation per capita and the best european swimming nation.

I'm not very optimistic in fencing. There were (are?) big problems within this sport in the last few months. I'm sure in 1 gold: Krisztián Berki will win the Pommel Horse (gymnastics) tournament. But of course we will win some more. I still believe in Dániel Gyurta and Katinka Hosszú (both swimmers).

But tbh I don't really believe in the water polo team. They are good but win the Olympic Games for the 4th time in a row? Would be brutal!

has it ever been investigated as to why Hungarians are so good at water sports?

But love them all - fencing, riding, pentathlon, swimming, waterpolo -such classy sports! Even kajak-kenu, which is brutal, just brutal.

How come we're so good at the most elegant or classy sports?:)
