How far will the US national team advance in the 2002 World Cup? Will it underachieve and be eliminated in the group stages, like in 1990 and 1998? Will it reach the second round, like in 1994? Or, perhaps, will it be one of the surprises of the tournament and reach the quarter-finals or beyond?

The answer could be anything from a 1st round elimination to maybe a quarter-final berth. It really depends on what sort of offensive creativity and intensity we have.

Someone voted for the U.S. to win it all! Now that's optimism. :D

I had the feeling someone would.. :D

My vote went to the 'Quarter-finals' option. Advancement to the second round is a realistic target, one the team must achieve, but I'd like the US to go one step farther and reach the quarter-finals. It's a bit of a strech but not impossible.

Reality Bites

So do you, Fred!!!:D

Just kidding. Like I hope you are doing.

I think we've got a real good shot at 2nd place in our group, and an outside chance at 1st. Italy, Mexico, Croatia, or Ecuador would be next.

Quarter Finals should be our goal , not just the second round , keller said it best yesterday in the HT interview , he said that just making the world cup is not enough anymore we have set a standard and the bar has to be reaised he did not say that directly but that was the point he was trying to get across this is not 1990 when we have a bunch of college all stars this is 2002 where we have great depth and good talent.

sorry gabe i disagree ecuador will lift the cup

Elimination at group stages, won't score a goal, won't win a point.
Lol a little harsh.

I have no idea how good the USA are, i mean you had a 1-0 loss to the Italians which is good ( lucky?) and a 2-0 win over ecuador.

Are the USA actually getting good at this sport too?

Overall i know nothing about the USA ( yes im totally ignorant to it) but i expect you to advance into the second round with a tough fight with Poland on the way.

Q Finals is kind of a joke for a nation which (mainly) dislikes football (yes not soccer)

Hey, fellas! News flash! The sport is called "Football" not "Soccer"!

Thanks, Russell!

Russ, you are totally ignorant about USA but know we mainly dislike soccer?

Help me folks... anyone else see a logic problem here?
Not me. Perfectly logical to me - I guess you missed his post in which he calls restricting results in a realm of infinite possibilities "open-minded".

The United States have the tools to at least get to the second round. They've improved a lot since France '98 which was a very disapointing tournament for them. Now they have a new coach and a lot of new talents. In my opinion,United States will finish second of the group behind Portugal.
