No Rebic due to Red card in Mexico game, no Perisic due to injury, various players who retired, etc. Same squad that was called up for Cyprus friendly from Sept 4th

Match background
• Croatia's record in six senior internationals against Malta is W5 D1 L0 (W3 D0 L0 in Croatia – W2 D1 L0 in Malta). They have scored three goals in their last two games against Malta, both wins.

• The sides first met in UEFA EURO 2000 qualifying, Miroslav Blazević's Croatia beating Josif Ilić's Malta 4-1 in Ta'Qali on 10 October 1998. Hubert Suda (29) gave Malta a half-time lead but goals from Dario Šimić (54), Davor Vugrinec (68 74) and Davor Šuker (81) ensured there would be no surprise. The return fixture in Zagreb on 21 August 1999 ended 2-1, Mario Stanić (34) and Zvonimir Soldo (55) on target before David Carabott (60) pulled one back.

• Zlatko Kranjčar's Croatia then beat Malta 3-0 at home in FIFA World Cup qualifying on 30 March 2005, Dado Pršo (19 34) and Igor Tudor (80) with the goals. Horst Heese's Malta sprund a surprise in the return fixture on 7 September that year; after Niko Kranjčar's 19th-minute opener, Stephen Wellman equalised with a second-half free-kick, Mario Tokić's late dismissal further sullying Croatia's evening.

• The sides' most recent encounters came in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying; Slaven Bilić's Croatia beat John Buttigieg's Malta 3-0 in Zagreb on 17 November 2010 (Kranjčar 18, 42, Nikola Kalinić 81). They won 3-1 in Ta'Qali on 2 September 2011, Ognjen Vukojević (11), Milan Badelj (32) and Dejan Lovren (68) on target either side of Michael Mifsud's 38th-minute strike for the home side.

Here are some pre-match stats:

Malta (LLWLL) is 1-4-0 and likely will be coming off a loss to Slovakia, their one win was at home against the Faroe Islands 3-2 and their losses include a 0-6 smashing in Denmark. Hrvatska (WLWLW) on the other hand is 3-2-0 in it's last 5 games, one loss was being robbed by the referee in the fixed Opening Match for World Cup 2014. Croatia will likely be coming off a friendly win over Cyprus and looks to get off to a positive start for EURO 2016 Qualification over group minnows Malta

Real nice Nepoznat

Ofcourse a win here is completely expected. Malta will defend and counter and I guess the game vs Cyprus will help to prepare for this game. Possibly a game where we'll see some of our youngsters get a shot.

qualification doesn't start until October, that's all that's needed to say about this match
Not to get too ahead of ourselves, but I would say our first big (and probably only) test is in November and should also give us a good idea of where we could potentially finish in the group

Possible lineup from SN:

Subašić - Srna, Ćorluka, Lovren, Strinić - Modrić, Brozović - Halilović, Rakitić, Kovačić - Mandžukić

Also I'd start dropping Srna from the RB position. He's terrible offensively. Never takes on anyone wide, always gets into position up front but then can't dribble to save his life and always does a cheap return pass back to the RM or CM which then slows the whole attack-counter attack up. It's horrible to watch. Defensively he's a battler but gets pushed around against stronger opposition. He has no left foot either. His whole forte in his 20's was his amazing will, motor and cross(free kicks too). He's lost all those things with age, and he has nothing to fall back on when he's lost a step because he never had skill. Srna definitely on the bench for me if we want to have a winning team.

i agree with you that Srna has lost a step but that's normal for a player in his thirties. He still has a good motor and the lungs to go up and down the wing. His crosses are also not as good and well he never had a left foot neither does Vrsaljko. When i look at Vrsajlko i see a player very similar to Srna although at his peak Srna had better crosses and freekicks then Vrsajlko. I don't think Srna is that big of a problem he can still play. Our biggest problem is leftback and we don't have a natural defensive mid. Putting Vrsajlko for Srna won't make much of a difference in my opinion.

"There will be like 904 people and 500 security guys on this match. Why the hell is this played in Zagreb and not some smaller city?"

Was going to say the same think gnk dz. Although it might be 500 spectactors and 904 stewards. :)

Seriously though, which genius chose Maksimir (no answers, please). I know we played in Osijek just before the WC but I'm fairly sure the attendance/capacity ratio would have been higher than tomorrow.

I presume Kantrida would not be approved by UEFA? Rijeka can play EL matches there so why couldn't they play Malta? I mean, are Malta going to bring thousands of ultras with them?

Sorry because this must have been covered already but how come Ante Rebic was allowed to play in the U21 match in Latvia? It was an official game.

He's got to learn to cut the "chat" and fouling out of his game. I presume he just doesn't know how to tackle and catches his man late.

This game would have been perfect for him IMO.

His senior team red card is not transferable to the U21's, just like missing out an U21 match after a red card in the senior team doesn't cancel the one game ban for the seniors...

They are not interchangable thru different categories.

I love his agression though, but just 10% less would ensure he gets no reds

Thank you, Blast.

Yes, aggression is positive and with ten players closing down a team always stands more chance of winning. More controlled aggression is required though and I hope NK has told him that. He doesn't want to start getting a bad reputation with referees. It's already a non-contact sport now. :)
