Champions CAPS United, with former Zimbabwe captain Moses Chunga in charge of his first game, suffered a third successive defeat when Black Rhinos won 1-0.

ZAMBIA - Green Buffaloes stormed into a 4-0 lead inside 50 minutes against Nchanga Rangers before conceding three goals and having to hang on for victory. Champions ZANACO, with two games in hand over second-placed Buffaloes, did not play and lead by eight points.

EGYPT - Zamalek's new signing Amr Zaki scored on his debut, netting the club's 2,000th league goal in a 3-0 win over ENPPI on Thursday. Alexandria club Olympic, after winning promotion to the Premier League, sacked coach Mustafa Younes on Monday after losing their first two games of the season. Ismaili and Petrojet are the only two sides with a 100 percent record after two rounds of fixtures.

ALGERIA - French coach Rene Lobello made a winning start as USM Alger beat Chabab Belouzidad 2-0 in their first game of the season on Thursday. Moulay Haddou's early penalty and a 25th minute strike from Bilel Dziri ensured victory. USMA finished second last season to JS Kabylie, who did not play because of their African Champions League game on Sunday.

AFP in Abuja
09.09.2006

Unfancied Ocean Boys defeated Wikki Tourists of Bauchi by a lone goal late Friday to stay on course to winning a maiden Nigerian league title.

Ocean Boys now top the four-team tournament with six points from two matches. Nasarawa United moved to second place after a 1-0 victory over bottom team Kwara United while Wikki are third in the standings with a point.

The Yenagoa-based club netted the match winner through impressive skipper Blessing Okardi after only 10 minutes to stay on course for this year's Nigerian league crown.

Despite Wikki being reduced to 10 men after Abu Ali was sent off in the 55th minute, they pushed Ocean Boys all the way in the second half.

In the other play-off match Nasarawa United shot back into the reckoning with a lone goal victory over favourites Kwara United.

The turning point of the game was when Kwara's Tochukwu Okoli was sent off after a second booking. Nasarawa took advantage of their numerical strength to score the match-winner through Emma Onuh on 76 minutes.

The championship play-offs will be rounded up Sunday with the overall winner as well as runners-up representing the country at next year's CAF Champions League.

The third-placed team will feature in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Amakhosi and Ezenkosi in four-goal thriller
Posted on 14 September 2006 - 00:25
Kaizer Chiefs 2 (17. Bartlett 21 min, 7. Motaung Jnr 88 min)
Jomo Cosmos 2 (11. Katongo 7 & 20 min) FNB Stadium
13th September 2006
Premier Soccer League
Temperature: 22° C
Chiefs put up the fight of their lives against Jomo Cosmos at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening as they turned around an early two goal deficit to share the spoils with Jomo Sono’s men in what can only be described as a highly entertaining game, that kept all those at the FNB Stadium riveted and on their edge of their seats from the word go.

It was The Amakhosi who did all the early running and were able to create the first goal scoring opportunity, as David Obua sent in a long searching ball from the left which was well controlled by Shaun Bartlett, who once he had the ball under control tested warmed Khumalo in the Cosmos goal with a shot from close range. That was on three minutes and then three minutes later in the sixth minute; Bartlett again came close as he shot narrowly wide of Khumalo’s goal off a Chiefs corner.

As Chiefs were beginning to stamp their authority on the game a lapse in concentration at the back saw Chris Katongo steal possession and start a move towards the Chiefs goal, he sent a short pass to Sam Magalefa who returned the favor. The Zambian international was able to collect the return ball and found himself in acres of space in the Chiefs 18 yard area. The leagues top goal scorer then struck the ball past Fernandez to give Cosmos the lead one could say against the run of play.

The Amakhosi began to find openings and were fighting the way back into the game that was until a Chiefs attack broke down and Cosmos counter attacked quickly. Katongo was fed the ball and he moved with lightening speed into the Chiefs penalty area. As a result he was able to complete his brace in the 20th minute as he shot past a helpless Fernandez as Cosmos went two goals up. That is where Cosmos dominance ended as Chiefs hit back immediately.

Arthur Zwane, who did not feature when Chiefs drew with Benoni United, was in an ungiving mood and showed his determination to keep his place in the starting eleven, as he set about tearing the Cosmos defence apart. Zwane ran at three Cosmos defenders and left them in his wake as he was able to send in a cross into the danger area which, Shaun Bartlett needed no second invitation in getting the ball into the back of the net as a result scoring his first official goal for Chiefs.

Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp was not pleased with the performance of his defence early on. He set about making changes and he took off Captain Cyril Nzama and brought on Derrick Spencer, in an effort to tighten things off. The Coaches’ gamble almost paid dividends when on thirty minutes, Spencer was played a short pass from a free kick and he struck the ball with venom from way out. Khumalo was unsighted as the ball whizzed past him and rocketed onto the post.

Chiefs continued their domination of proceedings in the second half and had a hatful of chances, which had they converted would have seen them probably scoring five or more goals. Their second half fight back continued with Shaun Bartlett bringing out the best in Khumalo. This was after Arthur Zwane had once again done some good work down the right and sent in a pin point ball for Bartlett, who turned and shot the ball at Khumalo who was at full stretch to keep the ball out. Soon after that, Jimmy Tau tested the Cosmos goalkeeper with a good effort from distance, the Cosmos keeper could not hold onto the ball and punched it downwards, David Mathebula reacted quickest to the rebounded ball and headed the ball goal wards but looked on as his header went inches wide.

As Chiefs continued to attack it looked as though they would be rewarded when Kaizer Motaung Junior was brought down in the Cosmos 18 yard area on 74 minutes. Instead of pointing to the penalty spot the referee booked Motaung for simulation. The referee’s inconsistency did not affect Chiefs as Shaun Bartlett, went close to finding the net two minutes later off a corner, Kaizer Junior shot wide when the rebound fell to his feet. As the game moved into the final five minutes Kaizer Junior again made himself a nuisance for the Cosmos defence, and along with David Mathebula were involved in a goal mouth melle but Cosmos eventually composed themselves and cleared their lines.

In the final minutes of normal time Cosmos let their guard down and Chiefs, lead by Scara Ngobese and David Obua combined in a number of short passes which eventually lead to Obua playing a ball to Kaizer Motaung Junior. Just as he did on the opening day of the season The Amakhosi striker came to the rescue of Chiefs and found an equalizer for Chiefs with a well taken effort from the edge of the Cosmos 18 yard area, which deceived Khumalo and flew past him and rested in the Cosmos goal mouth, Sending the crowd and Ernst Middendorp into delirium and ensured that Chiefs remained unbeaten in the 2006 – 2007 season.

In the lead up to the game, Ernst Middendorp had called on some of his senior players, inpiticular the likes of Shaun Bartlett, Siyabonga Nkosi and David Obua in particular to put in the kind of performance that will help lift the team. On Wednesday night’s performance it is clearly evident that they heeded the coaches’ call as Chiefs looked a more dangerous team then they were in the goalless draw against Benoni United on Sunday. Ernst Middendorp will take a lot of heart from his team’s performance against Cosmos and will be hoping that they can maintain the momentum as they prepare for their next league game against Ajax Cape Town in Kimberley on Sunday.

Nigerian league kings sack Belgian coach
AFP in Lagos
21.09.2006

Recently-crowned Nigerian league champions Ocean Boys have sacked Belgian coach Maurice Cooreman for gross indiscipline, according to club chairman Ngor Silva.

Silva said Cooreman has been sacked with immediate effect following "negative comments" he made about the club.

"He has generated negative publicity for the club with his unfounded remarks and as such we have no option than to let him go," said the top club official.

Cooreman, who has worked with several local clubs including Insurance, Lobi Stars and Gabros, has been widely quoted in the local press saying that he has not been paid his salary for the past six months.

Ocean Boys emerged as league champions against the odds for the first time in their history on September 10 when they finished top of a mini-tournament for the top four clubs during the regular season.

They will now represent Nigeria in next year's CAF Champions League alongside runners-up Nasarawa United.

A round-up of league action from around Africa at the weekend:

ANGOLA
Primeiro de Agosto moved to within one point of their first GiraBola title in seven years with a 2-0 win over Benfica Lubango. Second half goals from Joãozinho and Roger moved the army club, coached by the Dutchman Jan Brouwer, to the brink of the championship with four matches left to play. InterClube are the only team who still have a chance of catching them but lost further round in a goalless home draw with Bravos do Maquis.

SOUTH AFRICA
Silver Stars continued their leadership of the premier league after a 2-1 win over Maritzburg United, where new signing Simba Marumo secured the win from a free kick 15 minutes from time.

Stars lead by two points from Jomo Cosmos, who also won on Sunday 2-1 at home to Black Leopards. Kaizer Chiefs ended their worst-ever start to a league campaign with a 2-1 away win over Lamontville Golden Arrows in Durban, where Derrick Spencer snatched a late winner.

TUNISIA
Etoile Sahel went to the top of the standings in Ligue 1 as they beat Stade Tunisien 2-1. Etoile lead by two points from EGS Gafsa and US Monastir, who both recorded 1-0 wins in their respective games. Champions Esperance, who fired coach Khaled Ben Yahia in midweek, played out a fifth successive draw, this time held 1-1 at bottom-placed CA Bizertin.

MOROCCO
Olympique Khourigba won a second successive game at the start of the new season to take over at the head of the premier division with a 1-0 hoe win over Diffaa El Jadida. Mourad Raji's goal ensured they went two points clear of seven clubs on four points. Royal Armed Forces beat Raja Casablanca 1-0 in their previously postponed match with an early goal from Jaoud Ouaddouch.

GHANA
A late goal from Nana Arhin Duah saw defending champions Asante Kotoko go back to the top of the premier league after a 1-0 away win at Sekondi Hasaacas. Sunday's match was the only fixture played at the weekend, having been previously postponed when Kotoko were involved in the group phase of the African Champions League. Unbeaten Kotoko have a two point lead over AsanteGold.

ALGERIA
Former Algerian international Issaad Bourahli scored six minutes from time to hand Entente Setif a 1-0 away win at ASM Oran and the leadership of the first division. It was their fourth away win of the season with six matches played in the new campaign. The former African champions lead Paridou AC, who won 2-0 at home to NA Hussein-Dey, by two points.

EGYPT
Magdi Atwa scored the only goal of the game as Zamalek ended the unbeaten run of premier league leaders Ismaili. But Ismaili remain at the head of the standings with a two point lead over Al Ittihad, who beat Al Masry 4-0 in midweek. Defending champions Al Ahli remain the only unbeaten team left in the championship but have played two matches less than the leading pack and are five points off the pace.
