For whatever reason, Italy has rarely had good wingers. Camoranesi has to be the closest person to a proper winger we have had, and he was by no means world class and wasn't even really Italian. Pepe was the latest addition and we don't really need to debate that he is an average player.
Of course I am talking about the recent past.
Italy has been packed with defensive midfielders and number 10s. While Prandelli's side seems to be doing well at the moment, you look at the midfield and they are all natural defensive or deep central players.
Having a top class winger would really add a new dimension to the national team.
When you are playing top class sides, you need a bit of tactical diversity and at the moment, Italy has no natural wide players.
So why is this the case? Saying that Italian football doesn't use wingers is not really the full explanation either. Typically wide players have been foreign players.
