Italy had a good number of world-class wingers, but it's true, from Donadoni (and maybe Lombardo/Evani) the best possible was Camoranesi, who I can't define a world-class player at all. Anyway, I think that the same thing could be said about italian CBs, SBs, FWs and after Buffon even GKs.

Back when proper wingers were more popular, the job of a winger was to hug the touchline and spend 90 min trying to beat his man and put in crosses. Coming inside and deep (think Messi) wasn't really the true role of a winger.
I only partially agree, infact if the old winger had not cut towards the middle too he would have become predictable, but yes, the old winger was mostly a player who could dribble very well and put in perfect crosses: Causio, Claudio Sala, Conti, Donadoni and Lentini are the best I can think of right now.
I'd like to forget Pepe instead. :yuck: Lombardo was extremely fast but far less skilled than the ones I mentioned. Ferdinando De Napoli is obviously a mistake, he was not even a winger indeed, but the typical hardworking midfielder who ran up and down the pitch.

If Pepe had some real class in an attacking sense, he would be a great winger. He has the stamina, defensive ability and mentality. Just lacks class in attack.

But then, say, Krasic might not qualify as a winger either? Zambro has filled the role as a side midfielder in basically a flat 4-4-2 and for my money that means a winger in quite a true sense of the term.

"Winger" in the classic sense of the term was really a forward, whereas Krasic is a wide midfielder. I suppose wide midfielder = winger in modern footballing terms. Zambrotta has (to my memory) rarely played in this position in a flat 4-4-2. He'll always be remembered more as a fullback/wingback even if he did occupy this wide midfielder role.

For sure, perhaps my post had over exaggerated. If a winger didn't cut inside at all defending against them would be a much easier task.

I guess my point was more that the wingers of yesteryear play in a different style to those of today. Wingers still exist (C.Ronaldo, Robben, etc) but if they had played in earlier eras they'd have played differently. That's down to tactical choices as opposed to players being different. In the same way, if Nesta had been born 20 years earlier he'd have been a libero.

why is Pepe being mentioned? he is filth...the worst ever to put on an italian jersey.

The last world class winger italy had was donadoni, a brilliant player who we could do with now...

Zambrotta became world class once turned into a left back in my opinion..i think he excelled in that role and his game went up an extra level...even at right back for that matter.

as already mentioned by others in this thread, the style of play of the past few tournaments hasnt relied on pure wingers to attack, but more so out full backs..hence zambro and grosso in the world cup 06.

I don't think he will be called this time, but he deserves a chance in the future for sure.
