I've been thinking we should consider having a thread specifically for this. And maybe we should make it a sticky, just so we can discuss the current formations used by the current coach and how the NT players, the Izbornik calls up, fit into his favoured formation.

Of course we can also add our own formations and discuss the merits of each.

I thought I would start with Suho's and the two options he listed in a different thread:

In all reality there's more chance of Šimunić returning to LB than Ćorluka going there now.

The only realistic changes I can see being made to our customary 4-4-2 and XI are:

4-4-1-1
Pletikosa
Ćorluka-Križanac-Šimunić-Pranjić
Jurić
Srna-Modrić-Rakitić
KranjÄŤar
Dudu

4-2-3-1
Pletikosa
Ćorluka-Križanac-Šimunić-Pranjić
Vukojević-Jurić
Srna-Modrić-Rakitić
Dudu

- ÄŚale the only other option at LB
- PokrivaÄŤ the other option for DM in that 4-2-3-1
- KranjÄŤar the other option for the wide left role in that 4-2-3-1
- Maybe Rakitić or Modrić playing off the lone striker in the 4-4-1-1

- Srna to RB will not happen under Bilić
- Ćorluka will only ever be a RB under Bilić unless we have 3/4 other CB options injured at the same time
- Jurić is guaranteed a spot in the XI in ANY formation most probably to the end of this campaign (if we drop out of the race for qualification that will signal his end as well)
- Pranjić is almost certainly viewed as a LB only by Bilić
I just felt we needed to not put formations( and the players used), in every single thread on this forum. Why not have a place specifically to discuss what the Izbornik did in the last game(and the players used) in one thread. Making it a sticky would be a good way to discuss it on an ongoing basis and the thoughts would remain in one thread, instead of all over the forum board.

What do you guys think? A good idea or not!!!!!:thmbdown: I hope to hear your response and hope someone thinks its worthy of being a sticky :)

4-3-3

---------------------Runje-----------------------
-------------Corluka--------Simunic--------------
--Srna-----------------------------------Pranjic-
-------------------------Juric--------------------
----------------Modric---------------------------
---------------------------Kranjcar---------------
-----Rakitic-----------------------------Olic------

Option 2
---------------------Runje-----------------------
-------------Corluka--------Simunic--------------
--Srna-------------------------------------Cale--
-------------------------Juric--------------------
---------------Modric---------------------------
---------------------------Kranjcar---------------

Option 3

-------------Corluka--------Simunic--------------
--Srna----------------------------------Pranjic--
-------------------------Pokrivac----------------
----------------Juric-----------------------------
--------------------------Kranjcar---------------
------Modric----------------------------Olic-----
--------------------Eduardo----------------------

I think this option works best not only for player roles but overall stance on the pitch.

Kranjcar as much as an offensive threat he is i dont think he is at his best as a flanker(to slow) I rather him be tucked behind a striker with pacey players around him as he can hold a ball in the middle and has great backup behind him in Modric somewhat and Juric.. this is what i feel is the link to success not so much pranjic not being a proper LB... I believe by making our left side very quick from wing back to forward with a ball holder there in the middle we create a balance to offset the lack of some pace in the middle. I too agree as many of us here do that Srna as RB and Rakitic in the RM or forward position would be great and again it is really balanced defensively but yet adds a little more threat that i feel has lacked in sometime form our right side of the game...

I just dont understand how some of you here totally ignore Olic like he should not be in the starting 11... the guy is in his best form and if we do make 2010 in Africa and stays healthy will be a big part in whatever we accomplish there! He aint the best finsher but there are so many factors why he should be starter...

1. Form- Scores Assists in club(what else do you want)
2. Work rate(off the ball)- second to none
3. Speed- still very quick
4. Age- Prime years believe he is 27-28 or so

He in my eyes is very valuable and with "Kruchie" tucked just behind him he can be that more dangerous!

In goal I am ok with Pletikosa but i really think Runje is a better goalie overall! Didulica is doing well to and havent heard much from Galinovic... The future definitely lies in Subasic i believe.

What would you guys think about a formation like this? Is it doable? Or no chance of having 3 in the back? (I excluded Kranjcar cause he's injured and unavailable against Ukraine)

-------------Plete--------------
--Corluka--Krizanac---Simunic---
-----Juric------Vukojevic-----
Srna---------------Rakitic/Pranjic
----------Modric---------
------Dudu-------Olic------

My favourite lineup that I would love to see would be the one we had in WC 98. This lineup I think would maximize our attacking threat with Dudu, Modric, Krunchie and Olic all being allowed to attack freely. Vukojevic will support the defense along with one of the wingbacks while the other wingback is attacking ... or something of that sort.

4-3-3

Option 1

---------------------Runje-----------------------
-------------Corluka--------Simunic--------------
--Srna-----------------------------------Pranjic-
-------------------------Juric--------------------
----------------Modric---------------------------
---------------------------Kranjcar---------------
-----Rakitic-----------------------------Olic------
--------------------Eduardo----------------------
I like this lineup the best. I think Olic's workrate would help support Pranjic a lot on the left side. Since Olic can run all day, this position would be perfect for him to help in defending and attacking too. Rakitic and Srna are strong enough to support their own on the right side too. I would think a team would have to try and break us down the middle which might be tough.

A midfield of Juric, Modric, and Krunchie worries the shit out of me. I'd hate to see Modric and Kranjcar wasted by giving them more defensive duties. I'd rather play 2 DMs and let Kranjcar and Modric roam around behind Dudu.

And Pleti is better than Runje.

U-LICKI-BECAR, I agree with you that considering everything right now, Olic will and maybe should be starting against Ukraine. Considering everyone who is hurt right now, it is a no brainer that he will be starting against Ukraine. I like your option #3, but like Samardzija said, Pleti is better than Runje.

Daleko, I am myself am not in favor of us reverting back to a 3-5-2, I think modern football is only realized with 4 in the back today.

If Kranjcar, Eduardo and Petric are not available for this game(due to lack of fitness, form and injuries), then I expect Bilic will look something like this against Ukraine

Pleta
Corluka-Krizanac-Simunic-Pranjic
Vukojevic
Juric
Srna-Modric-Rakitic
Olic

Were playing at home against Ukraine, a team to me, that hasn't shown much offensively. Thus I think Bilic will push Juric further up the field in attack Actually in this game i expect the defense to push high up the field.

Forwards, Olic will start for sure, given the injuries and players not fit. Slaven Bilic made a mistake not calling on Mate Bilic for the Romania friendly, now he is a little short handed up front.

-------------------------Plete-------------------------
Srna-----------Krizanac----------Simunic-----------Cale
------------------------Corluka------------------------
-------Modric------------Juric-------------Pranjic-------
------------------------Kranjcar-----------------------
------------------------Eduardo-----------------------

IMO with everyone healthy, is our best option/s

the olnly thing is we know 3/4 of these formations and positions will not be played by Bilic. While he has done alot for the NT he needs to take the next step and i am losing faith in what Bilic can do for our Nt anymore...

I'd like to see us playing with a bit more width, i think we congest the middle of the field far too much with our play... then again we don't exactly have natural wingers.

From what I've seen of Modric, his form has sky rocketed ever since Harry put him on the left, with a bit more freedom and space to cut in off and take on players... i would love to see him perhaps in a formation like this.

-------------------------Pleti-------------------------
Srna-----------Corluka----------Simunic-----------Pranjic
------------------------Vukojevic------------------------
-------Rakitic------------Juric-------------Modric-------
-----------------Kranjcar-------------------------------
--------------------------Eduardo-----------------------

What I would use 4-2-3-1

Pletikosa
Srna - Corluka - Simunic - Pranjic
Vukojevic - Pokrivac
Modric - Kranjcar - Rakitic/Juric
Eduardo

Though I get the feeling Slaven will start inserting guys like Robert Kovac  from now on, still haven't heard if he's considered done and dusted

yep, but I really liked it ;) :pp

I like it because I am a fan of Pokrivac and I feel we need a guy with a good shot in the lineup. It seems we try too hard at times to be too cute and pass our way into the 16 yard box, we need some guys who are able to shoot from long distance and maybe spread out the defense. I always get frustrated by lack of long range efforts.

I also want to avoid Olic in the startin XI at all costs, Eduardo up front is good enough when he is healthy. If Eduardo is not healthy than we cannot use this formation, all of our other strikers are way too limited.

I'd use Juric on the left in the "bigger" matches, from the little times I saw him at Genoa he seems to play on the left side and is a workhorse. I like Cale defensively, but he really needs to improve in going forward if he wants to be a NT caliber starter.

About the CB's, I'm not a huge fan of Krizanac, in fact I think he is shaky and I don't like his attitude :)D) and I hope R. Kovac is dusted when it comes to starting with the NT. I have more faith in Simic honestly.

Only problem is I don't see Bilic shaking things up a lot, he rarely does it

What I would use 4-2-3-1

Pletikosa
Srna - Corluka - Simunic - Pranjic
Vukojevic - Pokrivac
Modric - Kranjcar - Rakitic/Juric
Eduardo

i know you have always like pokrivac but you put vukojevic in the starting lineup a guy you have ridiculed for a while now.. i like your lineup btw but i would flip flop modric and rakitic as modric has been playing very well for spurs on the left side of midfield..i could also see starting juric over rakitic as his form has been very good this season and rakitic has hardly played the second half of the year for shalke..

What I would use 4-2-3-1

Pletikosa
Srna - Corluka - Simunic - Pranjic
Vukojevic - Pokrivac
Modric - Kranjcar - Rakitic/Juric
Eduardo

I think this is probably our best formation, but a few changes:

Pletikosa
Srna-Corluka-Simunic-Pranjic
Pokrivac-Juric
Rakitic-Kranjcar-Modric
Eduardo
I would prefer to play Juric out of position than play Vukojevic DM, he doesn't offer enough for the NT yet.
Alternatively, if we had a decent left back (maybe Ibanez :D) we could leave out Pokrivac and put Pranjic left mid. But this would give the other midfielders more defensive duties.
Lets face it though, all of these teams are too adventurous under Bilic, he seems to only pick what he knows-he calls up Vrucina, Mandzukic, Kalinic before Mate Bilic, just because he's more unkown.

An updated formation:

------------Plete-------------
Srna---Corluka---Simunic---Cale
Rakitic---Modric---Kranjcar---Pranjic
-------Eduardo----Mandzukic/Olic----

The players in bold I want us to discuss:

1) First and foremost, whos the better man for the CENTER BACK position ...Krizanac or Corluka?
Secondly if you believe Krizanac is a better centreback, than Corluka would be best as a defensive midfielder if we want to put Srna as RB (but these thoughts might be pushing, since I dont think Bilic would ever put Corluka as defensive midfielder).

2) Is Cale good enough to start at LB with pranjic on the wing? Does the Rakitic/Pranjic as RB combo produce more or would the Cale/Pranjic as RW combo produce more ? (this is the main reason why pranjic is playing left back).

3) Is Kranjcar/Modric combo strong enough and willing enough to attack (of course) and defend at the same time (I think so)? OR would the middle be exposed for its lack of defensiveness and require a strict defensive midfielder instead of Kranjcar (Modric/Vuk combo)?

4) Lastly, I know a lot of people dont like Olic and his limitedness. Im not arguing for him or against him. But I do know that him being as a lone striker or being paired with the lazy petric produces nothing because the players dont compliment one another. However, some of Olic's best games have been when he had Dudu as a partner because dudu could hold the ball up and pick out Olic's runs (something Petric can't do). So with a full strenghth EDUARDO in the squad, is Olic or Mandzukic the better candidate?

Please discuss.

Even though we don't seem to have a left back at the moment ÄŚale is not the solution...IMO full stop.
If Cale is not the solution, than we cant blame Bilic for putting Pranjic as Left Back since we have no one else to cover that position (who else would we put there)?

-------------Plete--------------
--Corluka--Krizanac--Simunic---
Srna------Vukojevic------Pranjic
-----Modric-----Kranjcar----
------Dudu-------Olic------

This is still my favourite formation and think it compensates for everyones natural position the best.

I'm not the one to say who should play there, all I'm saying is since Moldavia before the euro Austria game, Pranjić has shown a consitant disability defending...Anyone that has followed Čale while at Dinamo will agree he is not NT standard...hell even I though ( I don't know what came over me ) his stint in Turkey and all the praising here on XT may have remolded him as a worthy player but unfortunatly his game against Andora reinforced my belief the guy is not ment to be.

Who should be..hell anyone besides those two at LB.
