Serie A Week 19 - 20/1/08 (14.00 UK)
Juventus-Sampdoria
LIVE ON FIVE
Stadio Olimpico

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juventus need to return to winning ways if they are to keep the Scudetto dream alive, but they can expect spirited resistance from a Sampdoria side on a high.

The pressure of chasing Inter is immense and Juve could already have ruled themselves out of the Scudetto hunt, despite their superb campaign. Last weekend, the Old Lady needed a last-gasp Alessandro Del Piero penalty to wrestle a point from Catania, but they will be on something of a high after a dramatic 5-3 midweek Coppa Italia win over Empoli.

It remains to be seen whether Tuesday night’s exploits have taken their toll on the Bianconeri’s squad. The pressure of a Cup run means that all of Juve’s troops will get their chance to shine and some of the second-string have a lot to prove, Tiago Mendes will particularly be desperate to silence his critics after his poor showing at Catania. Motivation won’t be a problem for Claudio Ranieri’s men, but maybe fatigue will.

Sampdoria thumped Palermo 3-0 last weekend and have been in buoyant mood ahead of the trip to Turin. The win took the Blucerchiati up to seventh place and was a crucial blow struck against one of their UEFA Cup qualification rivals.

The task for boss Walter Mazzarri is to keep the confidence flowing and instil some long-awaited consistency into Samp. Daunting as a trip to Juventus may be, it is time for Doria to address their away displays – they have lost seven times away from home so far this term. However, Mazzarri will need Antonio Cassano to continue his blistering form and Claudio Bellucci’s poaching instincts to work overtime if his side are to come away with anything against a team that have conceded just three times at home all season.

Juventus have traditionally dominated this fixture, but Sampdoria did upset them as recently as February 2, 2005. History suggests that the spoils are unlikely to be shared, as there hasn’t been a draw in the last nine meetings.

Antonio Nocerino is suspended for the hosts and Giorgio Chiellini is expected to be out for a month with a knee injury, but Ranieri has few other worries. Alessandro Del Piero and Vincenzo Iaquinta are vying for a striking spot and both made compelling cases against Empoli in the Coppa Italia. Defender Nicola Legrottaglie has been suffering from the ‘flu’, but he hopes to feature. Jorge Andrade, Mauro Camoranesi and Jonathan Zebina remain long-term absentees.

The visitors bring a strong squad to the Stadio Olimpico. Nigerian striker Ikechukwu Kalu and veteran hitman Vincenzo Montella are injured. Andrea Caracciolo is likely to start on the bench after recent fitness worries.

Keep an eye on: Antonio Cassano (Sampdoria) – The fiery hitman has been simply inspirational since finding fitness and could fire himself into the Azzurri set-up at this rate.

My comments
Judging from the past, Juve have a good record vs. Samp. Having said that, they were never a walk in the park. Juve are at home this Sunday, with a weak weak defense - Criscito out on loan, Andrade injured, Legrottaglie might start but has had a recent illness, Jonathan Zebina injured, and most recently Chiellini!! It's up to our midfield line up to pile the pressure on up front and grab a quick goal or two to establish a lead, and discourage Samp from any dreams they have of a win on our soil!!

Samp's strong points are with out a doubt Claudio Bellucci who is having his best season in Serie A yet, or his career for that matter. Antonio Cassano is also on fire, and shouldn't be overlooked either - love him or hate him, he's been on good form as of late! Off the bench, there is Emiliano Bonazzoli who is capable of scoring spectacular goals himself. IMO- he doesn't deserve to be on the bench, this guy should go join some club where he can get more playing time. There is alot of experience in this side, with Castellazzi in goal (formerly of Roberto Baggio's Brescia), Cristian Maggio (ex-Fiorentina), their Capitano - Sergio Volpi who's been a Blucherchiati since 2003! Other honorable mentions go to Gennaro Delvecchio- who got called up once by Donadoni (who also headbutted Materazzi :howler: ) and Daniele Gastaldello - a Juve reject from the early 2000s Lippi era :proud: Palombo has also been appreciated by the Italian media as a hard-working midfielder, and is highly respected in Italy.

Sampdoria are on a high from their back to back Serie A (3-0 vs. Palermo)/Coppa Italia (4-0 vs. Cagliari) win in the last week. Juventus also on a high after their emphatic Empoli win, but have defensive concerns and injuries and will have to be cautious.

Official Rhizoid Prediction

Juventus 2-1 Sampdoria

Probable lineups from C4

Juventus: Buffon; Salihamidzic, Legrottaglie, Grygera, Molinaro; Marchionni, Zanetti, Tiago, Nedved; Trezeguet, Del Piero

Sampdoria: Castellazzi; Campagnaro, Gastaldello, Lucchini; Maggio, Sammarco, Palombo, Volpi, Franceschini; Bellucci, Cassano

C4 copied it from gazzetta, but gazzetta often miswrite the lineup till the week-end when they finally adjust it. There is no way Franceschini can play as left wingback, infact Pieri will play there.
I really don't know who should start between Sala and Gastaldello as they both suck.
Beware of two players who are hardly mentioned: Sammarco, who is our Perrotta, and Campagnaro, a defender who is extremely tough.

Nocerino and Chiellini being out doesn't bode well for us, we're going to be vulnerable down the middle. CZ is going to have his hands full, let's hope Tiago can at least save some of his reputation left.

We are going to be very weak defensively. Tiago doesnt do much defensively, will he bother much about this game anyway, if his off to epl soon. But well the other alternative is Almiron who doesnt do much defensively either.

Anyway, maybe we should put CZ to defense instead :D would feel more safer. chelsea do it often with essien :D
