Dinamo and Rapid :D

Dinamo executive president, a kind of Joan Gaspart in Romanian version, cried bitterly like a baby when Steaua won the 1986 final (Dinamo had reached semifinals in 1984). He even threw his TV through the window of his house when Steaua eliminated Valencia a couple of years ago.

Livorno vs RCD Espanyol
Wed. 14th Feb 2007

AS Livorno Calcio should be wary of RCD Espanyol coach Ernesto Valverde's record against Italian opposition as the two sides meet in the UEFA Cup Round of 32.

• Livorno qualified for the Round of 32 as the third-placed side in UEFA Cup Group A. Espanyol finished top of Group F, winning all four of their games.

• The two sides have never met in European competition.

• Livorno have never met Spanish opposition in European competition. However, defender Samuel Kuffour will have fond memories of playing against Spanish sides, winning the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League final with FC Bayern München against Valencia CF.

• Espanyol have been drawn against Italian sides on three previous occasions, beating both AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano in two-legged UEFA Cup ties in 1987/88 and then drawing 1-1 against US Città di Palermo in last season's group stage.

• Espanyol are yet to lose a game against Italian opposition, having won two and drawn three of their five games against Serie A sides.

• Espanyol coach Valverde faced Italian opposition in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup group stage, with his Athletic Club Bilbao side beating Parma FC.

• In his days as an Espanyol player, Valverde played his part in two notable victories against Italian opposition en route to a penalty shoot-out defeat in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup final against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Espanyol beat AC Milan on away goals in the second round, while Valverde scored the decider as the Barcelona based side overcame Inter 2-1 on aggregate in the third round.

• Livorno's Ivorian forward Ibrahima Bakayoko will face team-mates from two different stages of his career against Espanyol. Midfielder Ivan De La Peña was a team-mate of his at Olympique de Marseille in 1999/00, while he played alongside Moroccan midfielder Mohamed El Yaagoubi at CA Osasuna in 2003/04.

• The second leg will be played on 22 February. The aggregate winners will face PFC CSKA Moskva or Maccabi Haifa FC in the Round of 16, playing the away leg on 8 March and the home second leg a week later.

Bordeaux vs Osasuna
Wed. 14th Feb 2007

FC Girondins de Bordeaux are looking to end a seven-game losing streak against Spanish opposition as they take on CA Osasuna in the UEFA Cup Round of 32.

• The two sides have never met in European competition, but did play friendly fixtures in 2001 and 2002. Bordeaux won the first 2-1 with the latter finishing 2-2.

• Bordeaux qualified for the Round of 32 as the third-placed side in UEFA Champions League Group C. Osasuna finished second in UEFA Cup Group D.

• Bordeaux have played in four knockout ties against Spanish opposition (winning two and losing two) as well as losing twice against Valencia CF in the 1999/00 UEFA Champions League second group stage. In total, their record in ten games against Spanish sides reads won two, drawn one and lost seven.

• Bordeaux are on a seven-game losing streak in competititve fixtures against Spanish sides, having not won a game since defeating Real Betis Balompié 2-0 in the first leg of a 1995/96 UEFA Cup third-round tie.

• Bordeaux coach Ricardo Gomes came up against Spanish opposition during his time as Paris Saint-Germain FC coach, with his side losing 1-0 against FC Barcelona in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final. His fellow Brazilian Ronaldo scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot after 37 minutes.

• Osasuna start the tie having played exactly 20 games in European competition, 18 of them in the UEFA Cup. Three of those have been against French opponents. They lost 3-1 at Stade Rennais FC in the first round first leg of the 2005/06 UEFA Cup, drawing 0-0 in the return leg to bow out on aggregate. They also lost 3-1 at RC Lens in this season's UEFA Cup group stage.

• Thus, they will be looking to avoid a third successive 3-1 defeat on French soil against Bordeaux.

• Two sets of former team-mates could meet up in the tie. Bordeaux's Vladimír Šmicer and Osasuna's Ludovic Delporte played together at Lens during the 1998/99 season, winning the French League Cup. Bordeaux’s Johan Micoud and Osasuna's Savo Milošević spent two seasons together at Parma FC between 2000 and 2002, when they lifted the Coppa Italia.

• Bordeaux traditionally have strong connections with Spain, with Spanish and Basque refugees from the Spanish Civil War like Jaime Mancisidor and Santi Urtizberea starring for the club in the 1930s. Bordeaux's first professional coach, Benito Díaz, was a Spaniard.

• The second leg of the tie will be played on 22 February. The aggregate winners will face Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC or Rangers FC in the Round of 16, playing the away leg on 8 March and the home leg a week later.

Steaua Bucharest vs Sevilla
Thu. 15th Feb 2007

Having come within two minutes of meeting Sevilla FC in last season's UEFA Cup final, FC Steaua Bucuresti must now face the holders in the Round of 32.

• Steaua qualified for this stage as the third-placed side in UEFA Champions League Group E. Sevilla finished second in UEFA Cup Group C.

• The two sides have never met in European competition.

• Assessing Sevilla's draw, goalkeeper Andrés Palop said: "We're playing a team from the Champions League and it will be a test of our game but we're not afraid. We avoided Werder Bremen and if we go about things the right way we can win."

• Steaua coach Cosmin Olariou added: "Like in the Champions League, we've got the worst possible draw, but it would be hugely satisfying if we could eliminate Sevilla. They are one of the strongest teams in Europe but we must not forget that last season we were only a few seconds away from playing them in the UEFA Cup final."

• Steaua lost out to Middlesbrough FC in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup semi-finals. After winning 1-0 at home, they trailed 3-2 at the Riverside Stadium – and were thus on course for an away-goals win – until the 89th minute when Massimo Maccarone's goal sent the English side to the final, where they lost 4-0 to Sevilla in Eindhoven.

• Steaua have been drawn against Spanish opposition in nine previous knockout ties (winning five and losing four) and have also played five times against teams from Spain in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup. In total, they have played 22 games against Spanish sides, winning six, drawing five, and losing eleven.

• For the sake of statistics, those draws include the goalless 1985/86 European Champion Clubs' Cup final against FC Barcelona, a game Steaua went on to win 2-0 on penalties.

• The location for the club’s finest hour was Sevilla's Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium, where the second leg of this tie will be played.

• This is Sevilla's first meeting with Romanian opposition.

• The second leg will be played on 22 February. The aggregate winners will face FC Shakhtar Donetsk or AS Nancy-Lorraine in the Round of 16, playing the home leg on 8 March and the away second leg a week later.

Spartak Moscow vs Celta Vigo
Thu. 15th Feb 2007

Having won their only previous tie against Russian opposition, RC Celta de Vigo will go into their UEFA Cup Round of 32 game against FC Spartak Moskva with confidence.

• Spartak qualified for the Round of 32 as the third-placed side in UEFA Champions League Group B. Celta finished second in UEFA Cup Group H.

• The two sides have never met in European competition.

• Spartak have been drawn against Spanish opposition seven times in European competition (winning three and losing four) and also faced Primera División sides in the UEFA Champions League group stage on four previous occasions.

• In total, their record of individual games against Spanish opposition reads won seven, drawn five and lost ten.

• Celta have been drawn against Russian opposition just once, beating FC Zenit St. Petersburg 4-3 in a 2000 UEFA Intertoto Cup final. They drew 2-2 in Russia and then won 2-1 at home to earn a UEFA Cup place.

• Romanian international team-mates could be on opposite sides in the match, with Gabriel Tamas representing Celta and Adrian Iencsi playing for Spartak. Defender Tamas previously played for Spartak, making 17 league appearances for the club in the 2004 and 2006 seasons.

• Russian players have proved to be a success at Celta in the past. Former Spartak stars Valeri Karpin and Aleksandr Mostovoi were key players at Celta during the 1990s. Karpin spent five seasons at the club while Mostovoi was there for eight seasons, earning the nickname 'Tzar' among local fans.

• Spartak coach Vladimir Fedotov has limited experience of Spanish opposition having twice played against Spain for the Soviet Union in 1972 UEFA European Championship qualifiers. He was a late substitute as his side won 2-1 at home and played for 83 minutes in the goalless draw in Spain.

• The second leg of the tie will be played on 22 February. The aggregate winners will face Werder Bremen or AFC Ajax in the Round of 16, playing the home leg on 8 March and the away second leg a week later.

All four Spanish teams could well get through here, although I could'nt be confident about Celta Vigo just now!

The other three I do fancy to qualify, but what about Espanyol's game, does that go ahead in Italy behind closed doors?

Thnx Mateo :)

I don't think Celta will make it. Even though they have the easiest opposition, but they don't seem to be in form, and the last time they had two competitions to concentrate on they dropped to segunda. Playing in Moscow during these times is very tough. Still anything can happen, they have the players who can win it.

Osasuna are a great team, their results might not show it. They are really good and they have depth, but they don't seem that convincing in Europe, not that there is much history to base this on. I don't know much about Bordeaux, but I do believe that Osasuna on their day can be a great team, who can move to the last 16. They also seem to be playing better than at the beginning of the season. They have very young, unexperienced players who are very good (Garcia, Soldado,...), that could make them or break them.

Espanyol probably has the toughest competition. I have seen Livorno play and I think they are good enough to beat Espanyol, without sweat. They do play some nice attacking football, lead by Lucarelli. But I could easily say the same about Espanyol aswell, on a couple of occasions they have shown us that they are a tough team, with a good amount of creativity in attack, and good organization in defending the ball from the midfield to the deffense. Yet they have also proven that anyone can beat them. If De La Pena has his way, and Tamudo and Luis Garcia form a good understanding with him, they could be lethal. They also have good depth. They are my pick of the best Spanish side in this competition.

Sevilla are the clear favourites, not only for the tie, but the whole competition. If they remain humble, and play their way they could walk all over Steaua IMO. A very tough team, with some great football, not easy to score against and they could bang a few against you easily. But they are the champions, and everyone wants to beat the champions, Steaua will bring eveything and try to surprise them. They did a decent job in the Champions League, but they only showed it against petty Dynamo. They have good players in Dica and Badea, who could change a game on their own. Still this tie has a Sevilla win written all over it.

Good Luck to all of them

Tough games for all. Espanyol face an Italian team which is always difficult, but they are slightly favourites, IMO. Besides, Livorno play in an empty stadium.

Sevilla have a tricky game. They're obviously superior, but they're in bad form now and with La Liga in mind. Besides, Steaua is a club with European tradition after all and many important Spanish teams failed in their stadium.

Osasuna-Girondins... balance clash, IMO. Osasuna are doing pretty well lately, especially at home. It won't be easy.

Spartak-Celta. I don't know much about Spartak lately, but Celta need to focus in La Liga and maybe they won't face this game as they should. I wouldn't be surprised to see them out.

Is that for sure? If so, it would be so unfair towards their fans, they can't help it hundreds kilometres down south a policeman is killed.

Steaua was last years semi-finalist, a miracle happened in Middlesbrough and Steaua gave it away, unbelievable, otherwise they'd have been the opponent of Sevilla in Eindhoven.

Unfair or not, Italy had to deal with some things that other countries solved long ago. I read the safety situation of the Italian stadiums and it's scary. It's like Spain 15 years ago. The meassures of security were low or non-existant in some places.

The death of the policeman is a disgrace for football. At least, it seems it wasn't in vain and it made people open their eyes. Of course, it is unfair for the fans, no doubts about it. A stadium with no fans kill one of the essences of the game. But something had to be done. Safety always comes first. I'm glad that Italy is solving their problems, better late than never.

The thing is that there was a law since long ago and noone did anything to deal with the problems. Now they were forced to accomplish with it, so in that sense it's not that unfair. They already had years to do it. It's not that they can complain much.

Osasuna get a good result from Bordeaux, 0-0 , the second leg in one week in Pamplona

Espanyol won 1-2 in Livorno , good way thanks to Pandiani and Moha

If Espanyol win they could meet the winner of CSKA Moskva 0-0 Mac Haifa
If Celta win they could meet the winner of W Bremen 3-0 Ajax
If Sevilla win they could meet the winner of Shakthar 1-1 Nancy
If Osasuna win they could meet the winner of H Tel Aviv 2-1 Rangers

Celta are extremly lucky getting a Russian team during a period when Russian teams are winter sleeping.
