Poland qualify for World Cup after 16-year wait

WARSAW, Sept 1 (Reuters) - Poland became the first European team to reach the World Cup finals through the qualifying competition when they beat Norway 3-0 on Saturday and Belarus lost 2-0 at home to Ukraine.

The results mean that Poland, who moved on to 20 points from eight matches, have won Group Five.

Ukraine have 13 points from eight games and Belarus 12.

Poland last qualified for the finals in 1986 and become the second European team after World Champions France to make sure of their place in next year's finals.

Polish striker Pawel Kryszalowicz took advantage of confusion inside the Norwegian penalty box with a neat turn and shot which hit the post and went in seconds before halftime.

Nigerian-born marksman Emmanuel Olisadebe scored the second goal in the 76th minute, tapping in Marek Kozminski's cross after the Poles strung together several open-field passes.

Substitute Marcin Zewlakow added a third in the 87th minute. (actually it was around the 82nd min)

Before and during the match, baton-wielding police clashed with Polish hooligans in the stadium after dozens of fans jumped a fence separating spectator sectors and began fighting among themselves. Norwegian fans were not involved.

Thank u, thank u very much. Now i'll be prayin for Romania (any other EE team as well).

YEAH! Finally our dreams have come true. Of course I am talking about the Polish soccer supporters. This is big. After 16 years, Poland are once again qualified for the World Cup!!!

The game started slow and it was not spectacular all through. Norway had a few chances in the 1st half, while Poland produced even less. The game was ugly at times, it was especially Schalke player Hajto who made a number of fouls, being a typical ****. He was finally carded for one of his attempts and this is a player, although a solid defender, that the Polish national team could do without.

Anyhow, Poland had a chance in the closing minutes of the first half during a mix up in the Norwegian defence and got a lead by Kryszalowicz. The Arminia Bielefeld player did well to score from a tough position, although the goal was hardly memorable.

The second half started out slow as well. The whole game was rather boring, nothing like the previous encounter in Oslo. Still, Slaski in Chorzow looked quite full and the ambiance between the supporters was excellent. Not so much so when a fight broke out between two groups of Polish supporters, the area was later cleared by the police.

There was little exciting play on the pitch, the most prominent figure again being Olisadebe who produced excellent runs and ball control whenever he was not marked so badly and received the ball. Unfortunately no goals were scored.

Later on, after a fine action from the Polish side, Brescia player Kozminski received a cross on the left side, advanced and served Olisadebe for a tap-in.

During the end of the last 45, Olisadebe received the ball unmarked (looked like a clear offside), stood right before the keeper and managed to fire right at him. Then the ball was cleared, deflected, Oli got it again and made a pass to Zewlakow who finished it off.

Another thing worth mentioning is Poland might have conceded once or twice without their European class goalkeeper, player of the year in the Dutch league 2001, newly recruited by Liverpool, Dudek.

Meanwhile, Sheva finally turned on the heat for the Ukraine side and made sure Belarus have no chance of catching Poland who are set for the World Cup 2002.

those through balls to Oli were great, but i thought he needed to shoot quicker, don't u? Well here's another article, it has more about the fights-

...More than 60 Polish hooligans were briefly detained by police during the game, a police officer in charge of stadium security said.
The 50 most violent hooligans, who scaled a fence separating sectors and started a fight with rival fans, were driven home to the nearby town of Zabrze during the match, officer Grzegorz Olewjniczak said.

None of the only 100 Norwegian fans at the packed 45,000-seat Silesian stadium were involved in the trouble.

'Two other people were caught stealing tickets, one smashed a tram window and we took nine others to the sobering-up tank,' Olejniczak added, but said on the whole, things had been 'fairly calm.'

Public television, which showed fans being searched as they entered the stadium before the start of the match, said the stadium and surrounding areas were being patrolled by 1,500 police and an equal number of private security guards.

Earlier this week, an alcohol ban was imposed on the city amid fears of crowd troubles, which have frequently plagued Polish club football.

Yeah I did think he should shoot on that one occassion when he tried to dribble the defender but I'm satisfied with the result anyhow, proof that they can get the points even playing badly.

Oh and good luck to all EE teams! Most of all I hope Romania will qualify!

Congrats guys, the first European nation to qualify for the WC besides France with their automatic berth.

You've won your group in convincing fashion and if you keep up this form, you could make some real noise in the WC.

Once again, congratulations.:)

Well then my friend get ready for a real experience 'cause there's nothing better than to watch your country play in the World Cup!!!:) You will be so pumped/excited/thrilled/nervous, your blood pressure will rise to the maximum, and you will find yourself screaming/swearing/laughing/crying.....If your a real soccer fan, you will experience the highest and the lowest moments in your life by watching your team in the world cup. For example, the best moment for me was when we beat Argentina at USA '94 and the worst is when we lost to Sweden in the quarter-finals (USA '94 as well).

Kaluzny, no I did not see the game, they did not show it here in Toronto.

they showed some replays on TLN, that's how I think he saw Olisadebe's goal. Plus. there're the internet reports, etc. even if we don't get to watch lots of soccer in tv here in Canada, we still find ways to be informed ;)

well, he did play really good, except all he needs to do is shoot quicker!!! OMG is he fast. He just waits till the last second to shoot, i hate it, im like on the edge of my seat and he just won't shoot. He did good for us, so did Kaluzny, Kozminski, and Swierczewski. And of course i can't forget about our great keeper Dudek, he kept us in the game in the first half.

btw, Oli's goal was probably the easiest goal he has every scored for the NT.

actually, Shevchenko has seven goals as well. He's a great striker, too.

Hey everyone!
I just wanted to say I'm so happy that Poland finally made it :excited::happy:

I'll try to post here more often but it's hard to be a devoted Bialo czerwoni when you live in another country, but I'm trying ;)
