New idea (in fact, an old one re-emerged): Aston Villa. They have money, they have the will to spend (gaffer just told he sees it difficult to buy top players, and would go to lower leagues probably), same city so no need to change a lot... and a tough team, for once! There is Agbonlahor, but he is more attacking, and Whittingham, but he is more defensive. And there are already two Hungarians in the first squad - yes two, because according to SkySports, Stieber is in the first squad!

blah sly sports :) he is in the youth team.
Tony Mowbray was just on local news (I'm not that far from Brum :) ) he says he's gonna get rid of some plays. He says it's not his job to make them happy but theirs to make him happy.

By the way, I like the approach of the bloke... WBA is something of an FC Hollywood in the CCL.

Mowbray: Gera's going nowhere

By Bill Howell, Birmingham Mail

TONY Mowbray has scotched any notion of Zoltan Gera leaving The Hawthorns and backed the Hungarian midfielder to recapture the sparkle that made him a massive hit with supporters during his first season at Albion.

Gera has been woefully below par for most of this injury-hit season, scoring just three goals with the last at Crystal Palace in October.

He has been continually linked with moves away from the club, but with just 18 months left on his contract, Mowbray insists he will bring the best back out of Gera.

"Zoltan has missed a few games with his injury, to be fair, and the day I saw him at Ipswich he was very, very good," Mowbray said.

"He has been a little bit up and down. He is not a sulky boy, he doesn't moan, he is great to have around the dressing room.

"He is the life and soul if anything, he makes the players happy and laugh so I have no problems with Zoltan as an individual.

"I'm sure he doesn't want to under-perform. I'm sure he wants to play his best all the time.

"Sometimes footballers coming back from injuries do take a little time to get back into their stride."

Gera and the returning Diomansay Kamara will both have to be firing on all cylinders if Albion are to take maximum points from in-form Coventry City tomorrow.

Mowbray insists there is no sub-stance to continued speculation that the pair are set to leave, with the Senegalese striker linked to Roma.

"It's speculation," the manager said. "I had it for two years up at Hibs in Scotland about every player and none of them ever moved. It doesn't affect me as a football manager. It might affect the player but it is my job then to keep him on board and keep him going.

"They have to get to the point where they respect me that much that if there is an enquiry I will tell them about it. Then I will say whether it is something I think they should be looking at, or listening to.

"You have to either keep them on board or let them go if it is right for your football club and right for them. But at this moment, there have been no enquiries, and no interest."

Mowbray says that Kamara has been a joy to work with.

"Hand on heart nobody has picked the phone up to this football club and enquired about any of our players.

"I don't think it is the first time that Joe's agent has dropped things in like that. He is still here playing and I would suggest that Joe is a consummate professional and if the decision is made that he is staying here and working hard, he will be first out to train and last in."

Been a while since I have been on the west brom forum... I found these just now.

The poor form exibited by Zoltan Gera against Barnsley, and other players on occasions, my question is; is this true poor form, or a chosen performance in protest to something that the player is not happy with. If the answer is yes, I just don't understand it, as why should the team suffer because a particular player is not happy. If a player isn't happy, he should still try his best and get a transfer.
they are just putting poor performances in.
Gera would they not be better giving there all and trying for the team and attracting a bigger club where a bigger wage will be offered and they will be happy?
Gera is probably the most talented player we have had over the last few years, this season he has looked a shadow of the player he was,no ones really sure as to why he is playing so poorly,is it injuries or is it he doesnt want to be here?,anyway the team MUST come first, firstly imo he should be dropped on Saturday and secondly if he is desperate to leave and the right bid comes in i'd let him go
Gera is supposedly this big role model for Hungarian kids yet when the going gets tough he throws his toys and sulks? Is that all he is, a fair weather player? I agree his professionality must be questioned.
Just being reading that T. M. said that Gera is going noware. Well he got that bit right, he certainly was going noware on Sunday.

Goodbye Zoltan...thanks for the memories..

Pity that my memories are now of a GREAT player who had a club stand by him through injury and all he could do was moan that he is too good to be playing championship...

yet not once have I seen him beat a championship full back or deliver a performance worthy of a place in the Salisbury City side...Idiot

Good riddance.
i cant see anyone buying him in jan as he hasent been doing it for us this year...just a shame to see one of our gr8est players just here for the money...
Its not a shame, its a disgrace. If he cant be bothered like you said then why should he be played. His performance yesterday wouldnt have earnt my wage let alone his.
his attitude was a disgrace yesterday - couldnt be arsed, pulling out of tackles, not tracking back
i would sell gera in jan his heart isnt at the club no more he backs out of tackles i would sell him get as much money as i can and then buy a new winger
At the moment Gera thinks he has a god given right to play because he was so popular during our Premiership campaign, pathetic, wake up Gera your nothing now.

With the kind of comments such as these from Mowbray, you may never know if it's to rise the prize of the player (he is not on transfer list), or is he really counting on him. What I've been talking about is the supporter's feeling, as quoted here. Well, we'll see... but for sure, the whole WBA performance is a disgrace right now. But two years ago, West Ham has been underachieving most of the season in the CCL, just got the 6th place for the play-offs, then pulled out a tremendous season in PL, so...

Zoltan Gera was once the toast of the Hawthorns. He was one of those players that fans loved, one of those that even opposing fans pay grudging respect too. How many of us playing FIFA have boosted his stats to 99 and still not thought this worthy of the little Hungarian??? Com'n be honest!!!

So what a shame its going to end in a messy divorce. I'm sure that Zoltan won't lower himself to read this article by an amateur journo typing at a laptop on Boxing Day night in his spare room with a can of Carling and kitten that should be on an ASBO (although thats a different topic) by his side. But if he does I hope it makes the born again Christian reassess some of the values he claims to hold so dear.

As a teacher I have seen a number of young people with real talent, waste it. Over the last few years, since I became aware of his story I have used Zoltan as a shinning example to youngsters of how you can come through hard times and still make it to the top. Obviously, you don't have to follow the religious line, but the values from Zoltan's story are clear and true, BUT WHERE HAVE YOUR VALUES GONE NOW MR GERA?

It seems that values are only valid up to a point with you, that point being hard cash and lure of a so called 'Big Club' and their Yankee millions. I am currently reading an autobiography by Brit ice-hockey player Tony Hand who turned down a move to the glamour of the NHL because it didn't feel right. You've got to respect that, a man of intergrity, a true sporting hero, something I once thought I might be able to say about Zoltan Gera.

Do you know Zoltan what it means to be a legend at this club? Do you not notice those gates that you drive through every day? Have you not seen the way the Albion faithful utter names like Cunningham, Regis and Batson? That could be you. You could really lead the revolution at this place. I'm sure you are clever enough to realise that the gaffer has got real potential and a midfield containing yourself, Koumas, and any two out of Greening, Quashie, Carter et al could really do some damage. But you don't want it.

At this festive time let me be the ghost of Christmas Future, let's jump forward to the year 2008. So the move to the Vile didn't work out and you went on loan to a team in France. At the end of the season a non-discript Spanish/Italian side moves in and signs you up. You play week in-week out in average teams in front of empty stadiums with no atmosphere until one of the big boys comes to town every so often and gives you a right royal roasting. Are you richer? Yes of course you are! Are you happier? Only you can really answer that Zoltan.

But hey go, walk out on us. We will still be here. we will still have our heros, our legends and you will soon fade from our memory. Some of us will clap, some will boo when you return, because you will return, but none of us will really be that bothered. We will be glad that the little Hungarian who tricked us has gone. He made us believe he had a heart, that he really cared, but in reality all he wanted was our money.

Hang on a minute doesn't Wolverhampton have a Hungarian market every year? Perhaps you could go there and suck the last few pennies out of Sir Jacks deep pockets, they are used to players like you. Prove me wrong Zoltan, be an Albion legend...but I bet you go for the money!

I distinctly recalling him being called drug user and piece of shite, waaaayyyy back (check back around page 10-20 of this thread for evidence) by WBA fans, when people only thought he was going to move. But he didn't move then.

As a player, my loyalty would end there. I see Zoli saying: "Ohhh...you thought I was going to leave? The I read all the trash you fans who knew nothing talked about me? That I was back on drugs? That I was a betrayer? I guess you fans are as loyal as a turd to me. So after you name-call me, I will leave next time around, and I may not give me all. Besides, how unbelievably stupid can a club be to keep a player who does not want to be there? Gee, surprising the production has tailed off, huh? Well WBA fans, I say you are all on drugs and are shite. Bye."

What's wrong being with ambitious and having dreams MR. WRITER??? What's wrong with wanting to play at a higher level? What's wrong with trying to better ones self? Who mentioned money, anyways? But yes, we should all bow down to the ice hockey playing Brit, Tony Hand, the man who was too scared to play in the mighty NHL. The guy who stayed at home, because he didn't want to play with the big boys. What a man. A "true sporting hero", as it were. Oh wait, I mean because "it didn't feel right"... Gera is a footballing hero to his fellow countrymen and makes his country proud.

Since the festivities are over, maybe you should come back to your senses. I didn't know they taught how to tell the future in England? Maybe they should have taught you that, an article with no facts, an article based on total speculation, and article with assumptions, and an article full of contradictions is really an article that shouldn't be published/posted, because there is no point in reading it. But I guess anyone with an Internet connection can post anything nowadays, huh?

Maybe you are right, maybe Gera could be an Albion legend, but just doesn't want to be one. But then again, who wants to be an Albion legend?

You cannot forget that Albion pay his wages. Several thousand pounds a week and he does nothing for that money. He really does do nothing...I've got no footage for the Gera movie 2006. He shows no effort at all.
In his first year at WBA he said time and time again how he loves the club and wants to be a Albion legend and he is living his dream playing for Albion.
After his transfer request he said he would be professional and do his best for WBA which he hasn't done. Albion fans have every right to feel 'short changed' .... don't forget it's them who pay his wages and paid for his X3 and he isn't giving anything back.
