Do you coach the 8 year olds or still the highschool kids? as My older kids dont. They never had soccer on TV as much as these kids do. their parents never had it on the telly so they never grew up watching it.

There is one sure way to find out what Im saying is true. Just go down io an 8 year old practice and see all the football jerseys on and Boots. You no longer see the diadora $12 boot or baseball/ American football ferseys. Most of the kids are wanting the Beckham boot or the Full 90. AC milan and Barca Jerseys. Though for the life of me I cant understand why they wear the Barca Jersey. :)

When you Market soccer products here rivals Sammy sosa bats or baseball signed Gloves then you know the sport has a strong foothold.
Kids where Barca Jerseys for the fact they worship god...and he wears the Number 10 Jersey for Barca :)

I don't have much contact with 8 year old kids, you are right on that. I now coach the keepers on the high school team, freshman, JV and varsity and I coach the U13 team that my son plays for and in that enviroment, they don't talk much unless I urge them to.

I email them clips like those found in the video section of XT and have then discuss it.

But I guess you are right, there is a soccer store close to where I live and they carry the shirts form Milan, Barcelona etc.

I think the biggest point you made is that the kids are no longer being coached by the soccer mom or even the soccer dad. There is a new younger generation of coaches that are coaching the youngsters.

American kids don't watch the game on TV.
Actually, when I was a senior in high school (it's been a long time since I graduated), this kid in my writing class and I would always get in trouble for talking about soccer, especially the day after CL games. Invariably, there would be a point in the period when our teacher would interrupt her discussion on the topic of the day to yell "Sam! Jared! Pay attention!" Good times.

I also had a Taco Bell bet with one of my brother's best friends on who would win the CL *that year*...I ain't tellin' you which one, you'll just have to figure it out. I lost, but all I had to pay was a late-night run to the Bell for something that I'm sure tore at my stomach lining the next day. Good times.

Here is the down side to all this. When my oldest was 8 it would cost me $25 to out fit him for the season, Now it cost me $150.

My youngest
Fila 90's (just like Donovans) $38
AC Milan Jersey (because Everton were knoced out of the CL and sme announcer said they were the best club in Europe) $54
Black addidas shorts to match the Jersey $24
Addidas Sock (no more standard black ones) $12
Addidas Shin guards $15
Fila Indoor cleats for turf ( regular sneakers not good enough) $30

The days of buying a plain blue soccer jersey for 15 bucks and telling them its an Everton Jersey are long gone.

I drop $120 on my Puma Kings Yearly, and $99 for the turfs....I get the cheepest shingaurds because on I only wear them during the game...I get fake jerseys for $12 bucks off the street in italy, I wear $10 nike socks I got 2 pairs, and I have 3 pairs or $10 black Nike shorts..... The boots are a killer

And Eto, Messi are also nice

man too much money being spent here....

I might play for a club that plays at Croatian picnics soon because I know relatives who play for the team and they want me to play for them. My shoes are Lotto :pp and I buy some Nike shin guards while the uniform would be provided for me.

My experience in the US so far is that most people don't know who Ronaldinho or Henry is or even legends like Pele or Maradona but somehow know who Beckham is, Im not kidding....

Only the latinos seem to have a clue about the game here, anyway I still belive the US inner cities has the most potential in world soccer but the media needs to expose Americans to more soccer, unless you get premium channels like FSC or Gol TV you have no real access to the game.

I think the US just wants to keep sports they are kings at like Baseball, American football and NBA Basketball dominating the coverage, they want to keep people in a bubble and not let their minds drift out of the continent for political reasons, guys like Beckham will come in once in a while to sell to the soccer moms but unless there is a big change in the media here the US will have troubles making soccer as great as I think it could be here.

This is the opinion of someone who has lived in London his whole life, the biggest problem is the exposure and coverage a average american inner city kid will get compared to the coverage of other big sports most their friends will play, you will find those who want to play but don't have many to play with so they join their friends instead of being a loner playing a 'girls sport', lack of coaching isn't a problem for say a 8 year old, this can actually be a more positive thing at that age, its that there isn't many kids out there willing to play, Im talking about the inner cities mostly where I think the real potential is at, rather than the soccer moms suburbs where kids might play but don't play enough and are too sheltered imo.

If America changes its mind on how soccer its dealt with in the media then it will naturally make more coaches but more importantly more kids out there with the passion to play the game, it all comes down to the media, it has the power to change everything in US soccer.

As long as we have FSC & Gol TV then the soccer fans in the US can watch all the games and follow the sport worldwide i just hope they can last forever because ESPN will never do that they have a big contract with baseball and basketball and we all saw how important soccer was to them when they played the world baseball classic over the champions league.

Yah but the ratings were less than that of the MLS.

Actually, for my own sake, the boots make a big difference. I'm not saying the $50 model up against the $150 one, it's not the price that's crucial, it's that they "fit" well. Not that the size is right, but that they are good to play in, it makes a tremendous difference to me. Zidane could probably play in the heavy alpine skiing boots and not lose a step, but since I'm not him, it makes a hell of a difference.

They dont matter, but they benefit..I pay for a good boot that dosent rip, that dosent stretc. I rather pay 150 a year then 30 a month for some boots from dicks

The problem with US soccer is that only about 20% of all soccer fans in the US follow domestic soccer (MLS and USL). The other 80% follow Mexican soccer, South American soccer and European soccer.

How good would EPL or Series A be if suddenly their domestic fanbase decrease by 400%?

MLS is average 15,000 in attendance. It will be a lot more competitive for international players if the attendance figure double. If attendance double, rating double, MLS will have more money = better quality.

It's sad that many Americans ignore MLS and only watch European soccer.
