Inter ponder Mascherano bid Saturday 9 October, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inter’s Argentine contingent could be increased after the club were linked with Javier Alejandro Mascherano.

The central midfielder is highly rated in South America and impressed scouts as his country won gold at the Olympics Games in Athens.

The Nerazzurri are said to be considering a January bid even if they face stiff opposition for the River Plate ace.

Real Madrid, Barcelona , Bayern Munich, Milan and Juventus have also been associated with the 19-year-old.

However, reports suggest that Inter are ready to make a substantial offer in January in order to net the international.

If Mascherano arrives then the San Siro giants would probably sell Cristiano Zanetti – who was associated with a move to Juve in the summer.

Barcelona chief in Brazil to cherry pick best youngsters
tribalfootball.com - October 8, 2004

Barcelona academy chief Josep Colomer is in Brazil this week running his eye over junior competitions in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Colomer has the brief to cherry pick the best young talent he spots and secure them to Barcelona contracts.

Part of president Joan Laporta's project is to reinvigorate the club's youth system and make it the best on the planet.

ÂŁ4 million-a-year is being pumped into Barca's 36 junior teams and Colomer is now stepping up the quality of young players the club is signing.

"We're concentrating on Brazil and Argentina," he told Diario Sport. "But we're also looking at Africa - particularly Senegal, Cameroon and South Africa. Eastern Europe is also being looked at.

"The world is now a lot smaller, so all markets must be considered."

Barcelona chasing Depor defender Caesar

Barcelona chasing Depor defender Caesar
tribalfootball.com - October 8, 2004

Barcelona are interested in Deportivo La Coruna defender Caesar.

Caesar is understood to be upset with how he has been treated by coach Javier Irureta this season and is considering his future at the Riazor.

AS says the defender is on a shortlist of players drawn up by Barca coach Frank Rijkaard whose contracts are to expire inside the next two years. The list comprises of around six names, with Caesar high on it.

Barca president Joan Laporta wants to sign the defender at the end of the season and is convinced Depor will sell as Caesar will have less than 12 months to run on his existing deal.

Caesar has been made aware of Barca's interest through intermediaries and is keen on the move.

Real Madrid have struck an agreement with River Plate for midfielder Javier Mascherano.

The 21 year-old Argentina international will move to Real Madrid when the transfer window reopens in January.

Real sports chief Emilio Butragueno struck the agreement with River president Jose Maria Aguilar, though AS

says nothing will be made public until the very last minute.
The deal will be worth ÂŁ6 million and to avoid a supporter backlash, Aguilar has insisted Real do not go public until January.

Terms still must be settled with the player, though Mascherano admitted last week that he'd welcome a move to Real Madrid.

Whatever! And by the winter Real Madrid's season will already be down the drain.

that's great news, he's an excellent defender and would be a good addition to the squad. Maybe we could see Marquez move up to the dm spot?

From what I have heard the fee is closer to $20 million which is around 12 million pounds. At that price you cannot really call an unproved (in terms of the European game) a steal. Still a decent buy for Real though

Either way, it's no more than 10 million Euro's!

But I think this is BS. It came out of AS.com, and they say anything just to get their fans hyped up. There's still like 2 months till the transfer window, so a lot can happen. I wouldn't be surprised if El Mundo reported that we have a struck a deal too. ;)

Barcelona are reported to be pondering a surprise move for Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann when the transfer window reopens.

The Spanish giants are considering re-entering the transfer market in January to help ease a midfield crisis.

With Edmilson and Thiago Motta long-term injury victims at Camp Nou Barca coach Frank Rijkaard is short of options in midfield.

The Dutchman is keen to bring in a new midfielder in the New Year as he looks to keep Barca on the road to challenging for honours.

Arsenal's Brazilian international Edu is believed to be Barca's top target to alleviate their midfield problems, although the Spanish club have played down their interest in the South American.

Reports in Spain now suggest that Barca are drawing up a list of alternatives should they fail to lure Edu away from Highbury.

Hamann is believed to be among the list of targets to fill the defensive role in their midfield having missed out to Real Madrid for Argentine Javier Mascherano.

The German's future at Liverpool is uncertain following the arrival and impact of summer signing Xabi Alonso.

The former Newcastle man was even dropped from the starting line-up for his side's last game at Chelsea with Senegal international Salif Diao getting the nod ahead of him to start in midfield.

Hamann was strongly linked with a move away from Merseyside during the summer and with his contract coming to an end next summer speculation is sure to intensify.

Liverpool could be prepared to sell him in January rather than risk losing him for nothing in the summer as it would raise more funds for Reds boss Rafa Benitez to spend himself in the transfer window.

But he could do a good job filling the hole in the squad. I wouldn't expect him to be a long term signing, but he has the quality and the big game experience to "hold the line" until longer term solutions can be found.

Barca ponder Dacourt move

Olivier Dacourt is the latest midfielder to be linked with a move to Barcelona.

The Catalan titans are looking to recruit a defensive midfielder after a recent spate of injuries.

Gabri, Edmilson and Thiago Motta have all been ruled out for around six months with similar knee ligament complaints and boss Frank Rijkaard has confirmed he will be signing a replacement.

'Los Cules' have already been linked with Arsenal's Edu, and on Tuesday were reported to have made enquiries for Liverpool's Dietmar Hamann.

The Italian media are now claiming that Dacourt, 30, is another option they are weighing up, and suggest that talks with Roma could be opened next week when Barca travel to Milan for their latest UEFA Champions League encounter.

Dacourt is under contract in Rome until the end of the 2006 season and would still command a sizeable fee should the Primera outfit decide to move for him when the transfer window reopens in January.
