The derby.

Tomori suspended, Kalulu out, Giroud doubtful. Kjaer will start while Jovic remains a possibility.

Although we have much better depth this season, I feel we are still no match for Inter, who also strengthened equally if not more than us.

Unfortunately I feel this game will be the one to "put us in place" after a great start to the season.

Hopefully not too bad a defeat that kills morale, as we have Newcastle just a few days later.

Their second goal, someone should have cut off that Lautaro from getting the ball up.

We play the match to them, clipped both their wing play.

They scored with the opportunity they got.
The second half will be the same as they will protect their goal cushion.

What is important even we lose, we imposed our game against them.
We did not manage to do it before.

This is something positive to take for CL nights.

Missed this. What a result...

you are still a great team

it would be tempting to change everything after this derby but you are still second best team in the league and imo should continue growing with this new lineup

inter is just stronger now and conveniently compact tactically too

Scoring 5 goals with 28% possession is pretty nutty for Inter. Kjaer/Thiaw/Krunic get decimated on fast counters. Just not a good enough core in a game like this, with our game plan.

Meanwhile Inter is subbing on guys like Augusto, De Vrij and Frattesi. Their squad and depth are just on another level.

What a crazy result.

They just scored at all the absolute best times everytime we came close, with Frattesi's goal sealing it.

Simone had the perfect tactics. He knows this is a counterattacking team so let us have all the possession but didn't know what to do with it.

Meh.

What an absolutely shambles performance. Our defence totally collapsed. Thiaw too raw and underwhelmed. Kjaer too slow to cope with Lautaro. Calabria shifted to central, leaving space for Inter to counter. Dumfries neturalised Hernandez on the left.

Our midfield were cut off by Inter's. Our midfield trio, Rejinder, RLC and Krunic were unable to advance forward and were often thwarted by Barella, Micky and Hakan. The moment we loses the ball, they launched counter attacks either on the right side, left vacant by Calabria or center for Thuram to run against our defenders.

Giroud was left upfront with little to show for as the supply were not there. Leao was constantly marked too.

Rejinder is like a achilles heels for us. Hardly moved the ball forward, instead of going forward, he retreated many times... Retaining possession of the ball without creating any chances in attack is not going to win us any matches. The same problem remained. We do not have a playmaker to make things happened for our forward. We need someone like Kaka or Ronaldinho to create chances for Giroud. Reijnder and RLC does not fall into that category. The moment Leao has a bad game, the whole Milan team collapse. This defeat was made worse because the defence falter as well.

Good point. This is the set-up that works really well against most teams. They just need to have a different approach against teams built to play on the counter...and there aren't many of these around. And a more balanced approach vs CL teams generally, I think.

The real focus needs to be on the defensive set-up. Maignan is great but just doesn't have the protection he needs, due to below par communication between defenders.

Our team is good but not great.

It probably wasn't supposed to be table topping prior to this match but neither was it supposed to lose 5-1 against Inter.

After having a lump in my throat ever since the game ended, I finally could think straight 😂

Some comments:

  • Blaming Pioli is the eternally favorite thing to do, and I rarely do it because he has his positives but man, this defeat is almost entirely on him
  • He got his tactics all wrong and the first three goals were all so similar - Inter push the ball forward finding the defense entirely exposed (Thuram for 1 and 2, Lautaro for 3) and it was a little bit too easy from there
  • As I mentioned, their goals really came at the worst times. The killer was Mickey's 3rd when there was a glimmer of hope from Leao's goal. Then the nail on the coffin was when Pioli went all out with Okafor and Jovic then Theo conceded that penalty 🤦🏻
  • Thiaw really got owned by Thuram and that was really bad for him. He's our best defender at the moment and I don't think Tomori or Kalulu would have done any better
  • Reijnders finally received a wake up call playing against a super midfield and realized it won't be easy like Bologna or Torino. He had a terrible game
  • Musah's cameo was a disaster. His first touch of the game immediately led to an Inter attack. I'm afraid for this dude. He might be our new blame-guy but I really hope not
All in all, of course we didn't play well but we didn't play play 5-goals bad. It was a really strange game. Thank god this game happened early in the season but Inter definitely look favorites for the Scudetto and as predicted before the season, we will be lucky to fight for a CL spot.
