Good point, Alc. We did look into the guy over the summer, but he had just had a pitiful spell with La Coruna. At the time he was a question mark. Obviously we should have taken the plunge. Romario (I assume you mean the Brazilian) will never ever come to Sporting. He is back in Brazil to stay. He is a classic home-boy who loves his beaches, dancing and momma's home cooking. If he ever came to Sporting I would not only sh*t a brick but eat it as well.

I hear inter is interested in him anyways! Check this out Inter wants Beto and Inter has a surplus of strikers! How bout they exchange one of their strikers for Beto? Maybe Recoba, Koller or Suker(Yeah right)! You see I should be a GM for Sporting.

I think Portugal has the most Brazilian players in Europe. Big D, Call Duque and tell him to go and get Romario!

Inter are in serious turmoil. They think the answer is to buy a few foriegners to solve every dilemna. THey have no unity. They also have eight strikers. Why buy another? If Sporting ever get that sad and desperate I'm becoming a porko...........................NOT!!!!

You scared me for a second there til I seen the not! If things don't start shaping up it might come to that! But I don't think so I think this team is starting to turn the corner. We are in 3rd place and only 1point behind second place and 5 behind Porto. god damn it we are still the best team in Portugal and the champions, so the only place from here is up!

I am not sure that you doubted me, I don't think you did...but do u recall when I told you that SCP would have a firesale? Check out this article:

Sporting to trim squad
Thursday 2nd November 2000

Just one day after the Sporting Lisbon board announced annual losses of ÂŁ6 million, assistant coach Vitorino Bastos has hinted that that the club will be trimming down its large squad over the Chrstmas period.

President Luis Duque had insisted that they would not be selling any players to offset the losses, however, on Thursday, Bastos seemed to undermine those claims by stating that the current squad is too big.

"Last year we had a big squad, but we needed it as there were a lot of suspensions and injuries," said Bastos.

"But that is not the case now and the squad could see a few changes in December," he warned.

Sporting signed several new players in the summer, but they crashed out of the Champions’ League at the first hurdle and already trail Porto in the championship by five points, and it now seems certain that some players will be transfer-listed.

With regards to Sporting’s next task, beating Uniao Leiria on Friday night, Bastos admitted: "It will be a difficult match because Leiria will play very defensively."

-----------------

funny thing about the Leiria match...Leiria will only have 13 players....thats only 2 subs!

Yeah, I remember. If we're doing this to unload after the CL, then it makes some sense. If we're unloading players in a panic, then we're a bunch of idiots. We've got a lot of deadwood that can be unloaded. I'm for streamlining with a purpose, but not to panic or please the socios/investors/media. Maybe with the income, we can get a forward or something. Who knows?

Yeah, to me, Sa is a waste of space. I know people claim he does good things, but in the games I've seen he's done little to nothing. However, I'm for getting rid of all these guys we never use. Mahon, Babb, Kirovski etc... Either play them, or go get somebody we actually plan on using. We've got six to eight guys who never play and apparently never will. JVP is also very over-rated, but he's more active than Sa. Sa just dives, whines and moans about everything.

I would disagree and say keep Mahon and Kirovski. They still have hope at Sporting and are good players.

I would get rid off:

Acosta
Babb
Cesar Prates
Andre Cruz
Sa Pinto
Schmeichel

The rest are ok. Sporting need a new look. If they are gonna put up a fight on us they need a few fresh faces from their big squad to dig up and find out what they can do.

I think Mahon and Babb were good pickups, especially Babb. They are big and strong and should have been used in the CL, instead Inacio uses Andre Cruz, who is useless unless there is a dead ball situation near the area.

A win against Bayer this week should bring in a good amount of income for you guys as well as more points to the country's ranking.

"New look"? We just won a championship. I think a new look is premature. What I don't like is that the new buys aren't being used. Prates is great. I don't know what you're talking about, there. Cruz is okay. His free kicks are useful, but I'm not sure about his defense. Schmeichel does seem to have overrun his course. It's a shame, since he was so instrumental to our victory last year.

What really bugs me (Milan do this too) is we have bought all these players, supposedly to add depth, and we never use them. We play the same guys over and over again. This would be fine if we played well.

All this said, dismantling a team that just won the league would be the act of an imbicile. The guys can still play, in general. I don't like the fact we rely on these international players who don't produce. I know it's cool to say so and so from the seleciao plays for Sporting, but if they suck then bench them. Horvath, Kirovski, the Irish guys, Spehar are all good options. Either use them or find players that will be used. I hate paying players who never, ever see teh field. It's pointless.

Oh, I think Mboma hasn't got much to show anymore. Maybe he needs more play time to get a rhythm going. I like Edmilson. WHen he plays, from what I've seen, he's been pretty good. Barbosa is okay, too. I haven't seen them play much recently, so maybe their form is down. But when I have seen them play, they both contribute.

On a positive note, this is a nice example of fans of two teams discussing the shortcomings of a club without being insulting or incredibly condescending. And they said it couldn't be done!!! :D

Daeone I always come here in this forum and discuss...can't say the same for that sorry excuse of a team in the other forum though ;)

I concur with Taco on getting rid of Cruz, asides from his free kicks and his total domination of Jardel in SCP 2-0 win last season...he is nothing special.

Ole Pete has run his course...and what are you going to do after he goes? Nelson? Nuno Santos?

I say keep Babb, he is as true of a defender as you have. And if the Beto to AC Milan talk is true...uh-oh for you, :D for me :D

I have always acknowledged the fact that you discuss football without being a d*ckhead. That's why I respect your opinion about my team. I can't say the same for everybody, however. That's why I pointed out that this was actually a fruitful discussion about my team's present crappiness without gloating, mockery or condesention.

If we sell Beto, and we will have to, I just hope we shop him around for the best price and I hope for his sake he goes to where he'll play regularly.

I still like Dimas, although he had a wretched stretch of games. I think he single-handedly blew two for us. I love Prates. He's been great in every game I've seen. Cruz is okay, but you're right in that he only seems to appear for freekicks and runs up the side. Of course, Roberto Carlos does the same thing. Neither are famous for defensive toughness. I still think Cruz has game left in him. Now, if we can sell him for good money and replace him with good talent, then go for it.

Carlos is adequate at defending, whilst Cruz is not. Cruz is a poor defender...but I guess if you score nice goals no one notices that.

Maybe. I must admit I haven't noticed Cruz at all in the last couple of games they've sown. That either means he's been doing his job and there's nothing to see or he's been asleep and there is nothing to see.

Yes Andre Cruz is a poor defender. Away to Real he was all over the place. A typical Brazilian full back. Brazilians wing backs cant defened and its that simple really. They just want to run forward. Some can like Robbie Carlos, he's a great tackler but Cruz is poor.

The reason I'm not sure about Babb is that his reputation over hhere isn't very good. At Liverpool he would be slagged off every week for poor marking, and at Fulham, well, he didnt even get a game.

But of course Ireland's side is made up of Nationwide players anyway. But his strength could be useful but make him titular at your own risk!!

Brazilian wing back start the offense for the team, so defence is often their second priority. That's why, historically, defense has been Brazil's weakness. Lately (last ten years), Brazil has thought more of defense and adopted what people call more an European style of play. It works, but is less pretty. In Brazil, that causes turmoil since they must not only win, but win beautifully.

Sporting win 4-0

Did anybody see the game? Of course, RTPi didn't bother to show it for whatever reason. The Record says Pedro Barbosa was man of the match with two goals. Delfim played the first 73 minutes before leaving for Tonito. Sounds like Delfim played a pretty good game. Beto got hurt and Babb replaced him. Don't know if Beto is injured or just banged up. We'll have to see. Sounds as if Sa actually played pretty well. His name is mentioned in a few actions by the goal. He helped create the first goal, in the first minute, which I believe was an own goal by somebody named Birlo. Nice of Sa to show up. Acosta didn't seem to do much. That's becoming a trend which could become worrisome. All in all, sounds like the kind of game we needed. A solid ass-kicking always does the soul good. Maybe we'll carry a little of that momentum when we play Bayer. Now we're playing just to salvage some pride.

Yes Sporting are the only teamm in the CL without a single win, a shame really but like Boavista 2 years ago I think they will finish on a high and I think Sporting will win, especially with that confidence booster 4-0 win, and Bayer have nothing to play for either, but Rudi Voeller is unbeaten as a coach
