Just curious what you sportinguistas see as our most pressing need for the second half of hte season.

The keeper situation has been iffy all year. The forward situation is fine as we are stocked. The midfield lacks a field general ala Viana. And the defense sorely misses Phil Babb and the injured Beto.

Personally, I would like to see a solid center back arrive. A good replacement for Prates on the wing would help, too. And obviously, a midfielder that can win balls and distribute like Viana is key.

Your thoughts?

Well if we sell Quaresma, there is no denying that Boloni is a pure idiot. As for what we need, we should get at least 2 backs, and 1 mid. Our forward situation is pretty good for now, but the midfield and defense are what need work. I think the midfielder could easily be received from some team in Spain or Brazil, and
the defender should come from England.

And the water boy? What continent should he come from?

Alright, I'm sorry, Dae. I promised myself I'd resist... damn it.

Please carry on, I'm otta here. Sorry.

Easy, Pila. The kid is just talking football. Surely you don't have to invent reasons to give him sh*t. ;)

I have heard that Litos is rumored to be coming to Sporting during the break. Not a bad pickup, I guess. A healthy Beto obviously helps, but we still need another solid center back. Babb was not replaced at all.

As for midfield, the idea of a brazilian midfielder is not a bad one, but I would want somebody like Gilberto with Arsenal or Juninho Pernambucano. THose two are obviously not coming to Sporting, but we need a ball winning tackler who can create and distribute. Yet again I lament the loss of Viana so early in his career.

Well, I say if Viana is truely unsettled we should try and get him back, but I have to admit that would seem rather desperate.

Pila-How soon will it be before you start stalking me looking for every time I mess up or am wrong? I haven't done anything to you for fricken months but you've been on my case since the longest thread to hit XT... I could've easily starting bull****ting you in at least 8 threads because I wanted to insult you so bad it almost hurt inside, but I stopped myself because I didn't want to start another long ass thread which would just waste my time, since you probably would've dragged the thread at least 20 pages just to add insult to injury. And I know exactly what your going to do to. And I know it's going to happen because I voiced my opinion, so just get over with it.

You need....

* a keeper
* a true #10 (or let Tonito play that position)
* a half-decent CB to complement Contreras.

Not exactly. If you can get back a player that helped guide you to a title, wouldn't you do it? ANd most likely we'd get him for less than we sold him for which is a porfit. Of course, this point is moot as it has not even been discussed amongst the key parties.

And we have an excellent coach. He just has a few holes to fill and decisions to make regarding Jardel. I wouldn't give up on him yet.

Say, F1, maybe you are a sportinguista after all. Every December Sporting seem to be looking to fire the coach. Even when the dude just led us to a title (Inacio) or are about to (Robson). :mad:

Just because Robson moved to Porto and eventually won the league, doesn't mean he would've accomplished it with Sporting though.

Please. That team with Robson was a giant and Robson had them firing on all cylinders. Robson got dumped for no reason other than Quiroz suddenly became available. It was easily teh stupidest move ever. Period. Finito. It still pisses me off.

Once again, do not try to comment on that which you have no clue.

The reason he got fired was because he made a bad coaching mistake in that UEFA Cup game in Austria against Casino Salzburg. We were up 2-0 going into the 2nd leg, and halfway through the match, he decided to go for broke and score an away goal. He took off a defender at halftime (the score was 0-0), and the end result was we lost 3-0 in OT. Sousa Cintra fired him a couple days later.

To this day, Robson admits that that was an awful mistake on his part, and Sousa Cintra admits it was the worst move he ever did in his entire Presidency at Sporting.

And, yes, that team would have won the Title hands down. That is still the greatest Sporting team in my lifetime.

1) We've got one - His name is Nelson. He's as good as Quim, and probably better than Ricardo. He's better coming off his line than both of them, he's got better hands than Quim, and can make the big saves like both of them. My only negatives with him is that his distribution is weak, and he can be caught flat-footed every now and then.

2) Without a doubt, we need one. I have been harping and pining for Carlos Martins. If Boloni won't play him, then we should go get Neca.

3) Again, we've got one and he'll be back in January - Beto.

In addition to the #10 midfielder, we need a legitimate right back (Mario Sergio?) and another box-to-box midfielder who can serve as a long-term replacement for Paulo Bento. Might I suggest Pedro Mendes of Guimaraes??

Stop on with the first post, Pen. Kiddo don't know sh*t about Sporting history.

I have to disagree a bit with your second post. While the mistake in the UEFA match was a factor, I personally think they were looking for any reason to dump Robson simply because Quieroz had become available and everybody loved what he had done with the youth teams and so on. He was a "glamor" pick. Robson just got hosed.

Agreed. That team of 1993-1994 was absolutely incredible. You can actually talk about that team and discuss possible european glories (if they'd stayed together) and not look like an ass. Or keep a straight face. ;)

We'll have to agree to disagree on the Robson firing. Robson was Cintra's man. He brought him in in 1991 and gave him free rein to create that super-team. That loss to Salzburg was just so stunning that Cintra just lost his judgement momentarily, I belive.

And there is no doubt we could have pulled off a League/Uefa Cup double that season. Salzburg actually went all the way to the final that year!!! They played Frankfurt and Karlsruhe in the quarters and semis that year; With out talent, we could have beaten both teams.

You are correct on the shocking nature of the defeat. Perhaps the reason for the firing lies somewhere in between. It was definitely a knee-jerk reaction.

Not entirely, if I'm not mistaken, he was fired due to a 2-0 loss against a second division team in the Taca, similiar to what happened with Benfica. Although you could be correct about Quiroz.

Nobody gets fired for losing in the league cup unless you are already on the "hotseat" for whatever reason.
