This weekend, the Bundesliga kicked off and so did 7 argentine players - the biggest number of argies ever to play in Germany.
We don't have the big argentine 'star players' here Germany but some promising young talents which could get into the focus of Bielsa if they are playing well ( ... thats my humble opinion :D , Bielsa still is in command of the argentine NT, isn't he ?..).
And i'm expecting the number of argentine players in the Bundesliga to grow over the next months and years, since the german clubs don't have these huge financial problems like clubs from Italy or Spain because they didn't take part in the european transfer madness ....
Wolfburg and Werder are targeting Leandro Romagnoli, Dortmund is still said to be interested in Ernesto FarĂas ( although a transfer will not take place this year ..) and Hamburg still has an eye on Daniel Montengro, perhaps they will try to bring him into the Bundesliga in the winter..
In this thread, i will give you some updates on the performance of the argentine players every once a while, perhaps this is of some interest for you, although you won't find any Riquelmes, Saviolas or Crespos here....

Right now, you can find the following argentine players in the Bundesliga :

Borussia Dortmund ( 2002 german champs ) :
Juan Fernandez ( 22 years old, left or right midfield ), signed from Estudiantes this summer, .

Schalke 04 ( 2002 german cup holders) :
Annibal Matellán (25, defence ), signed from Boca in 2001

Hamburger SV ( my team :D ) :
Rudolfo Esteban Cardoso ( 33, 'classic' playmaker in central midfield ), signed '96 from Werder Bremen
Bernardo Romeo ( 24, striker ) , signed from San Lorenzo in the winter 01/02
Cristian Raul Ledesma (23, defensive/central midfield), signed from River Plate this summer

VfL Wolfsburg :
Diego Klimovicz ( 28, striker) signed from LanĂşs at the end of 2001

Bayer Leverkusen :
Diego Placente ( 25, defence ), signed from River Plate in the winter 00/01 - perhaps the best known player of all 'coz he played in the World Cup.

Bundesliga day 1

Bundesliga day 1 :

Borussia Dortmund drew 2:2 at home against Hertha BSC Berlin in the season opener on friday.
Juan Fernandez played 90 minutes in the left midfield. Dortmund coach Matthias Sammer was really impressed and delighted by the performances of Fernandez in the pre-season and gave him a spot in the Dortmund starting 11. While Fernandez was really impressing in some warm-up matches and in the german league-cup, i would consider his start into the 02/03 Bundesliga-season as mediocre. He played mostly reliable in the defence but failed to impress in the attack - most Dortmund attacks were started over their right wing. I think he had some kind of 'stage fright' in his first match in front of a crowd of nearly 70000 , but he is an amazing talent and i expect to see some good performances of him during the ongoing season.

Schalke won 1:0 at home against Wolfsburg.
Annibal Matellán played full 90 min. as left wing back in the Schalke defence, he played a very solid part although not very spectacular. Wolfsburgs 'scoring sensation' Diego Klimovicz ( scored 10 goals in 13 matches in the second half of the 01/02 season) missed the match due injury.

Leverkusen drew 1:1 at Cottbus.
Diego Placente hadn't got a good match - it seemed that the argentine World Cup desaster was still in his mind - he played very weak and was benched after 45 minutes...

Hamburg won 2:1 at home against Hannover 96.
Rudolfo Cardoso and Bernardo Romeo missed the match due injury, but Cristian Ledesma was substituted after 45 minutes and played an important part in turning around the match in favor to Hamburg ( we trailed 0:1 at half-time). He took Hannover playmaker Krupnikovic completly out of the game and showed incredible ball control and passing skills in the central defensive midfield. He maintained every ball under pressure and was always able to find his mates with a good pass. If he continues to play like today, he will secure a place in the Hamburg tarting 11. The crowd was really impressed by his dribblings and control, the only thing he must improve are his shots...

Thanks for the update and the info on how the player's performed. Perhaps you could provide us with a weekly analysis. It would be well appreciated and very welcome.

Ledesma is a great talent. He's an excellent player that should do very well in Europe. I see him playing for our National Team soon. The way you described his perfomance today is how he has consistently performed in Argentina for River Plate.

Good luck to Hamburg in the Bundesliga this season!

teg, your reports would be really appreciated, so if u can do it, like czar said, they would be very welcome.

thx

What about Leandro Romangoli? I thought he went with Bernardo Romero

I knew he'd suffered a pretty serious injury, but I thought he still had transfered. Is he tabbed to be moving abroad again or is he in Argentina for the time being?

I hope he´s transferred to Hamburger SV as they have strong argentinian spirit there and especially Romeo! I bet San Lorenzo wont offload him just yet ´cause his price must have been decreased due to his injury (or is SL in financial trouble), so maybe we´ll see him in Europe next season!

Wow, i never thought that i would find so much feedback in this thread. I will give you weekly updates on the performance of the argentine players in Germany if my time allows it.

To talk about Romagnoli : As a die hard HSV supporter, I would really like to see him in Hamburg, but that won't happen. At the moment, SV Hamburg simply can't afford another transfer with a volume of about 4-5 mio Dollars or more. Perhaps something will happen in the winter.... but it is said that Hamburg is interested in Daniel Montenegro, not Romagnoli. If they try to sign another argentine player it's more likely that they will try to get Montenegro...
It would suck big time to see Romagnoli join SV Hamburg archrival Werder Bremen   , but if i stop looking through my SV-Hamburg glasses ( ;) ), i must admit that Bremen is a good place for talented young players . Werder coach Schaaf has an excellent reputation for his ability to work with young talents, he developed Thorsten Frings ( whom you might know from the World Cup) into a top class midfielder for instance.
But at the moment, Bremens interest in Romagnoli also seemed to have cooled down because they lost 2 first team defenders due long term injuries and a strong defender now is their first transfer target.

@Rimmer : We'll never forget Keegan, Hrubesch, Magath & Co. and Gravesen will also have a place in our hearts forever :D :D !

Damn, I really wish to see him at HSV shirt, just seems to me as the perfect place for him although what you said about Werder might be true! But HSV shouldn´t miss this chance to sign the next Aimar (IMO) for 4 to 5 million I´d say go for it it´ll pay off in the end, but who am I to tell!

BTW Tegtmeier, could you tell HSV´s formation and how/who they´re playing?!?

And who the hell is Daniel Montenegro (atleast when compared to Romagnoli)?

As is said before, Romagnoli would be great but most german clubs do only spend the money they own on new players ( although there are some black sheep like Herha...) - thats why they don't have debts of 40, 50 or 80 Million Euros like many of the italian and spanish clubs. Our squad is already too big, some players who should be sold couldn't find a new team because every club has to save money now.
And SV Hamburg has to repay its new stadium which they financed on their own, so it wouldn't be too smart to raise another credit to finance a soccer player....
..ok, lets stop that, i sound like a teacher... :D

You can find the Hamburg squad
here , although goalie Nr.4 is missing...

This season, in most cases Hamburg will play a 4-4-2 or some kind of 4-2-2-2.
I expect the squad for the next match ( northern german derby at Bremen ) to look like about the following way:

----------- Pieckenhagen ------------
Hertzsch -- Baur -- Ujfalusi -- Hollerbach
----- Ledesma ------- Wicky ----------
------ Antar --------- Albertz ---------
------ Romeo ------- Heinz ---------

Romeo is back in full training again, i think he will start for Meijer, but he won't play full 90 min. Ledesma should be in the starting lineup as well after his good performance vs Hannover.

Sorry I shouldn't have said "forget" I meant "won't miss so badly".

What kind of job is "Didi" Dietmar Beirsdorfer doing at HSV these days ???????

I know he is back in HSV, but he ain't the coach.

Yeah, I get it. Tough times for all clubs across the world especially in Germany with that Kirch thing going on!

Question about your formation:
Does your sidebacks then participate often on attack ´cause as I remember from seeing Albertz playing for Rangers that he isn´t exactly a classic winger as he tends to go central (and if get right that´s the case with Antar too)? So I could think of your lineup as 2-4-2-2 (sounds crazy doesn´t it, but you get picture)! Are your sidebacks on the bar with the task at hand or what do you think of them, seems to be quite challenging place to play on your formation?
And finally what´s Cardozos place on the field if he gets the nod?

Thanks for the link also, pretty useful site!

@Rimmer : Beiersdorfer is new general sports manager and is successor of Holger Hieronymus, whose contract wasn't renewed due the dull performances of the team over the last 2 years.

@NEO : I've just opened a HSV thread in the german soccer forum, we could discuss everything concering HSV there. Perhaps the thread brings some life into the deserted german forum..
This thread here should be limited to the argies in Germany imho.

Concerning Cardoso, the only position i could imagine for him in the Hamburg team is the position occupied by Albertz at the moment. If Jara will play 3-5-2, he could get the job behind the 2 strikers. And if Jara switches the alignment of the 4 midfield players to a diamond, then Cardoso could also play the central offensive position while Albertz takes the left midfield.
But sadly, Rudolfo is injured again and i don't know when he will be back. The career of Cardoso was marred by injuries - he could have had a much bigger career if stayed healthy. I would consider a healthy Cardoso to be one of the 2 or 3 best central midfielders in the Bundesliga, but now, his career will come to end soon, he is already 34 years old. I think, that this season will be his last :(.

Hamburg have had some great playes over the years. The period from the mid to ate seventies to the early eighties was very good.So much talent and ability with players such as; Magath, Kaltz, Jakobs, Hiernoymus, Hrubesch and Keegan formed an excellent team.
