Gianfranco Zola’s on-off transfer to newly-promoted Serie A side Napoli could now go ahead with Inter forward Roberto Baggio moving in the opposite direction to fill the striker’s boots at Stamford Bridge.
According to reports in the Italian press, agents representing Inter Milan, where Baggio currently plies his trade, Chelsea and Baggio, met up in Lugano in Switzerland on Monday to discuss a possible transfer.
The deal hinges on whether Zola makes the move back to Italy but Chelsea are confident and are thought to have offered Baggio a two-year deal worth in the region of £2 million per year.
Before any deal can take place Zola has to decide whether he will return to the San Paolo stadium after a seven-year absence or take up a lucrative offer from Turkish side Fenerbache, who have given him until Saturday to make up his mind.
The Italian cause is helped by the fact that Zola would love to return to Napoli but while the Stamford Bridge club are holding out for £3 million for the Sardinian, the Italians are only prepared to offer £1 million and the prospect of two friendlies between the clubs.
As a link to the magical Maradona years at the San Paolo, Zola would be welcomed with open arms in the southern port and manager Zdenek Zeman is banking on the little striker inspiring his team on their return to the top flight.
