Juan Roman Riquelme to sign with Porto on April 1st.
Posted March 31, 2002 - 22:38 by Marco from http://www.fcporto-online.com/

Boca Juniors star midfielder Juan Riquelme has claimed that he is on the verge of a move to FC Porto. "I have played for Boca Juniors, one of the greatest clubs in the world," he said. "But now I'm going to one of the best clubs in Europe, FC Porto."

The Argentine #10 has struggled in his attempts to move to Europe in the past, and is desperate for negotiations between Boca and FC Porto to be successful. In the past Boca has failed to complete a deal with AC Milan and Barcelona. Both teams have since given up on Riquelme.

"I know FC Porto have made a bid for me although I'm leaving all the negotiations to my agent, Jorge Mendes, who are arranging everything.

"It will all be okay in a few weeks and I'm sure that I will be playing next year with my good friend Hugo Ibarra and I'm really looking forward to that."

Riquelme has become increasingly frustrated at his repeated failures to move to a European side. Some believe that his past agents were the reason that a deal was not made which prompted Riquelme to switch to Jorge Mendes, an agent with strong ties at FC Porto. "To be honest, I'm relieved. I'll get my chance to make a name for myself in Europe for a big team like FC Porto. They are a team that play every year in Europe and challenge for their league title every year." he explained.

When asked about whether or not he envisions himself playing in Italy or Spain, Riquelme added that for certain he see's himself playing in one of Europes bigger leagues but that right now his focus is on helping FC Porto return to glory next season.

Riquelme is expected to be presented to the media tommorow on April 1st and will wear #41 for FC Porto.

Happy April's fools!:howler::dielaugh:
April Fools!!!!!
regardless of an April Fool's joke, we lost Riquelme (if we ever had him) ages ago. ;)
Apparently we have a manager who does not value creative play much. And with Rui Costa and Pirlo having to fight for the same position, and being misused whenever they do get to play, I do not think that there is much of a point in signing Riquelme.
Dae,
Riquelme is not lost. There is still some tangible hope. If we were to sign Riquelme, you can be sure of the following things:
a) Ancelotti will no longer be around!!
b) Rui Costa may be sold as well.
c) We will have in the team both Pirlo and Riquelme!:star:
What isn't had can't be lost ;).

...and Payman- don't give me that pre-contract 2003 for free thing. Anyone signing such a contract would be a :jester: as it would be illegal. One cannot sign a player for free before 6 Months prior to the current contracts expires, and Milan would have had to agree with Boca... something quite unfeasible, as Boca would then de facto gift Milan 25 million$ or sommin (I know Fester is propably a real sweet-talker, but the financial situation in Argentina just doesn't spell Santa Claus).

A major reason to the lack of negotiations for Romi going on could be the lawsuit against Boca from Caniggia (some unpaid money whatever), and I read somewhere that Boca had had their assets frozen until the lawsuit was cleared up.

Who will get Riquelme... very good question.

Lastly... Is there NO possibility of an option *D* Payman :howler: ?

Ciao.

Hey, I have to rank Riquelme at perhaps the top of my amazing player list at teh moment, but I see no reason for him to come to Milan. We don't really need him, as both Rui and Pirlo (especially, as he is young) fill the position and I think dealing with Boca would barely be worth the aggravation, as Glen pointed out.
Oh, I don't understand option A. Why would getting Riquelme mean Ancelotti is gone?

As pointed out Ancelotti thinks we have enough creative players. Also since it is plainly obvious (as far as I am concerned) that Carlo is going to be around next season the only kind of players that are going to be signed are AGING defencemen (hint: ex Juve). I do not have a problem with the defencemen part but the aging part is sad.
Let's hope I am wrong about the aging part
WE do have enough creative players, so I agree with him on that one. Now, if he'd just use them properly aned allow them to create......:rollani:

We need defensemen, but the thing is we have/had some in Coloccini and Coco. I think we have Bonera, or nearly did, anyway. It's hard to tell anymore.
Forget about this Riquelme and get me ARIEL ORTEGA!!!!!
