The 2007 Women's World Cup will be held in China, Sept. 10-30, in five venues: Shanghai (Hongkou Stadium), Chengdu, Hangzhou, Tianjin and Wuhan.

The federations will be represented by 16 teams:

Host China qualifies automatically.
Asia gets a further 2½ teams besides China: Australia, North Korea, and Japan, after a successful playoff against Mexico.
CONCACAF gets 2½ teams: Canada and USA, but Mexico lost to Japan in a playoff for the "½" spot.
Africa gets 2: Nigeria and Ghana
South America gets 2: Argentina and Brazil
Oceania gets 1: New Zealand
Europe gets 5: Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and England. Qualifying thread

When will South American qualifiers begin or do they have any qualifiers at all? If I understood Fifa.com's results and fixtures list correctly, Brazil has not played a single match since olympics and Argentina has not played a match since World Cup finals 2003. There aren't any scheduled matches either for any South American nation. Should someone update Fifa's website or is this really the current situation of the women's game in South America?

I think women's sporting events and women's contribution to sports such as football are demeaned by being held in a communist country that is also thoroughly sexist and holds women back in indentured servitude. I think the WC in China deserves a boycott

North Korea qualified by defeating Japan for 3rd place. Japan must play the 3rd team from CONCACAF.

There's now a financial incentive to qualify for the World Cup and advance beyond the Group round.

For the first time in the history of the FIFA Women's World Cup, bonuses (totalling $ six million US) will be paid to the teams in accordance with their final standing at the 2007 WC:

- Champions: USD 1 million
- Runners-up: USD 800,000
- 3rd place: USD 650,000
- 4th place: USD 550,000
- Quarter-finalists: USD 350,000
- 9th to 16th: USD 200,000

Midfielder Homare Sawa scored a goal and set up another Saturday as Japan defeated Mexico 2-0 in the first leg of a playoff for September's women's soccer World Cup in China.

Sawa put Japan ahead with a header in the 38th minute and then helped her team double its lead after the break when she set up Ai Miyama, who scored 20 minutes from fulltime.

Mexico, ranked 26th, came close to tying the game in the 64th minute when Evelyn Lopez forced Japan goalkeeper Miho Fukumoto to make a diving save. Minutes later, Mexico captain Maribel Dominguez hit the crossbar with a lob from 30 yards out.

The two teams will play again March 17th in Toluca, Mexico.
