Canada claims CONCACAF final, tops U.S.

PUEBLA, Mexico (Ticker)

- Karla Schacher scored the lone goal of the match in first-half injury time as Canada recorded a 1-0 triumph over the United States on Saturday in the CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship final.

Canada also claimed the title in 2004, defeating the Americans in Ottawa.

Schacher provided all the offense her team would need when she received the ball just across midfield, cruised into the penalty area and blasted a shot past goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher.

“The team was so committed to the game plan,” Canada coach Bob Birarda said. “We are so very proud of our team right now.”

The lone tally in the 45th minute was the only goal allowed by the United States in five games of the tournament.

“Today’s game was very frustrating,” United States coach Tony DiCicco said. “It was one of those games where one defensive breakdown forced us to kind of chase the game. Our team showed great heart, created a lot of opportunities and fought until the end.

“Give Canada credit, as they never broke. We will have to learn from this game and move on.”

Canadian goalkeeper Erin McNulty benefited from a stingy defense to post the clean sheet.

“They just couldn’t get behind our back four,” Birarda said. “They had several chances, including a couple inside the box.”
