Wolff agrees to $1.1 million, four-year extension with Major League Soccer

June 4, 2002

NEW YORK (AP) -- Chicago Fire forward Josh Wolff and Major League Soccer agreed Wednesday to a four-year contract extension worth at least $1.08 million.

Wolff, in South Korea with the U.S. national team, will receive the MLS maximum salary of $270,000. The deal includes a raise for the remainder of this season and gives MLS a two-year option that could extend the contract through 2008.

The deal was announced prior to the Americans' World Cup opener against Portugal.

``It's important for me to stay here and help a young league raise its profile in the world,'' Wolff said in a statement. ``We have both come a long was in a short period of time.''

Wolff, a college teammate of fellow national team member Clint Mathis at South Carolina, has six goals in 17 international appearances, and had two goals and two assists at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He was sidelined for much of last year by a broken left foot and had one goals in his first five games with Chicago this season.
