A new beginning and a great opportunity for many clubs to have a positive, winning start to the new year. It is an exciting time for clubs and all their fans, and especially the youngsters who will have an opportunity to make a name for themselves. Most clubs don't treat this like they do the home and away season, but we still usually see a strong team winning it. Last year the Crows pumped the Magpies, who will it be this year?

There have been several rule changes for the competition:

- If you mark the ball anywhere in the goalsquare, you get to line up directly in front and not on an angle.

- The boundary umpire will come in 10 metres to throw the ball in, creating more space and more flow in the game.

- If the ball hits the goal or point post and bounces back into the playing field, then it is play on.

- A 10 metre circle around the centre circle will be introduced, meaning ruckmen cannot begin their run-up from outside the larger circle. Onballers cannot enter the circle until the ball has been bounced.

- The umpire can signal for a video replay to see if a 9-point goal should be payed.

These will be added to the experimental rules tried last year in the Wizard Cup. The fixture is released and here it is. Everyone in the country gets a taste of footy action. Remember, it has been reverted back to a knockout stage and not a group stage like in previous years.

nice rules...the one with onballers running into the circle after the ball is bounced is going to cause so much trouble.

Sydney Swans Scenario:

Ticket Sales at the moment for Sydney v Carlton at Homebush Stadium are very low - infact it's terrible.

Sydneysiders will avoid this game and spend the day at the beach or at a BBQ instead of being at Homebush watching a poor and boring side like Carlton.

35'C doesn't help player and fans either.

Richmond defeats the Western Bulldogs comfortably by a few goals, on Friday night at Telstra Dome. The match was the first for Nathan Brown against his old club.

Essendon sneaks over the line by a couple of goals against Fremantle that same night in Darwin. James Hird gets best on ground again.

Melbourne defeats the Kangaroos by a few goals on Saturday under the hot Canberra sun. Melbourne held a handy lead all match in the extreme heat.

West Coast absolutely hammers Collingwood on Saturday night in Perth by over 100 points. Collingwood managed only 2 goals for the entire match in a pathetic effort.

Geelong shocks Port Adelaide again by a couple of goals in Adelaide on Saturday night. Ex-skipper Ben Graham leads the Cats to a memorable victory for the second time running.

Brisbane Lions easily take care of Hawthorn on Sunday in Darwin, after Schwab claims his team can win the flag. The holders of the flag put the 'contenders' back in their place.

St. Kilda impress against Adelaide in Adelaide on Sunday. The young Saints eliminate the reigning premiers in a very close match.

Carlton thumps Sydney in Sydney on Sunday. The new look Blues cruised home by over 100 points against an undermanned Swans outfit.

See the Melbourne - Kangaroos match and see what everyone predicted. Now look at the result.

Don't expect Melbourne to be an easy beat.

i just read that Carlton are favourites to win the wizard cup. Seriously, the media etc...are just plain fuked! one game and now carlton is good again. for the past two seasons, they didnt even want to know Carlton and now they are going to win the freaking cup.

i admit, we played very good football, but sydney were missing a lot more players than we were...well, starting players that is.

Worsfold was talking up the chances of the Eagles winning the Wizard Cup. I think they can do it. They should prove too strong for Melbourne but it is the pre-season. After that they'd have Carlton or Gellong wouldn't they which they could easily overcome.

my weagles who got NO free kicks in the 2nd and 3rd quater... how much did u pay the umps?
:howler:

The Eagles got outplayed by a team who was hungrier and better for 4 whole quarters. Maybe they were complacent after such an easy win against Collingwood, but the umpires definately weren't the problem.
