He has 16 games and 30 minutes more to score 14 goals to tie it, at this rate he should break it. But he tends to slow down end of seasons, so maybe he will as usual or keep on trucking.

After Round 23 he has 22 goals now. 15 rounds left. Needs 15 goals to break record. This is definitely on.

Higuain's impressive record, without belittling his form and top quality, is actually a result of Napoli's attacking style and the form of the supporting crew.
Insigne, Callejon and Hamsik have 22 assists between them and all 3 are among the top 10 assistmen in serie A, with Insigne leading the list.
Napoli are the team with most shots overall and most shots on target, with Higuain being the author of "only" 1/3 of these shots.
Simply put, the team creates a lot of chances per match, and until this keeps happening, Higuain will keep scoring a lot. Even if his form drops and he starts missing most of the chances, he'll keep scoring because the guys behind him will keep creating.

At this rate, and with the above in mind, he will break the all-time record. The only thing that will stop him is an injury. And when I say injury, I don't mean just him, but also the players behind him. So far Higuain, Hamsik and Callejon didn't miss a single match, while Insigne missed only one, when he was available but rested. It's improbable that come the last third of the season and with EL involvement all of them will stay injury free.

Toni in his 31-goal season was more impressive. It's a good comparison to make. Both pure CFs who scored/are scoring a great number of goals, and their teams were built to service them. Toni was more clinical, and Higuain misses more chances. Napoli create a lot of chances for him in every game. Toni's goals were better too.

Any single Cavani season for Napoli is better than either.
