MILANO - Massimo Moratti's interview after this morning's match Brazil Vs Turkey, Inter's chairman spoke about the transfer market for the possible acquisition Alessandro Nesta: "It is difficult. We are looking what could happen in the future, but we never took any major steps for the central defender because the price tag is very high. However we are looking around and Lucio who plays for Bayer Leverkusen is also a great player, also very expensive. Therefore I prefer Nesta, being the better defender."

Ok I have always felt inter Had some doubts in central defenders, even if all of my fellow interista dont agree with me. Now Last year we tried to get Sol Campbell , this year is Nesta or Lucio .

My question is who is the weaker of our 2 Centre backs? Cordoba or Materazzi? which is the one that bring doubt to our staff that they feel we need some upgrade??

Looks to me like it is Materazzi that is being doubted in our team. But really, I don´t think that we doubt Materazzi any. It´s just that Nesta is the best central defender in the world and if we could get him, it´s something we would wanna do. I do not take the words about Lucio too seriously, since I believe that Materazzi is better than Lucio.
But back to the odd thing then...

Since Nesta is more of a sweeper kind of player and not a manmarker like Cannavaro and Cordoba, it becomes natural that Materazzi who is the same kind of defender that Nesta is, would be the one that would leave if Nesta signed. Most teams in Italy wanna have one defender with pace and manmarking skills and one defender that are good in the air and a good passer and organizer.

It would be unfair to say that either Cordoba or Materazzi is weaker. They are both worldclass, but IMO Cordoba is better and can only become better. Cordoba has all the skills that is needed in a central defender. Although he is short, he is very good in the air. He´s also the fastest defender in Serie A. That is a thing Materazzi lacks right away - pace. Cordoba is also a great leader and can be in charge of a defence if he had to. He proved that when he played with Sorondo and he had to be the defender that was organizing the defence.
Cordoba doesn´t play so brutal as Materazzi does either, but still Cordoba is being more sent off. That´s because of him arguing with the referees. Not because of brutality.

So for me, the "weak" link is Materazzi, but I can´t say it is weak at all. Materazzi rules and it´s ONLY Nesta I would ever prefer over a guy like Materazzi.

Lucio would be a crap transfer though. He´s not THAT impressing defensively. And he too has similarities with Materazzi so if we are interested in Lucio it is even more obvious that we are looking for a player like Materazzi and not Cordoba. If we were to replace Cordoba we would go after Canna, I believe.

Nontheless, having Cordoba and Materazzi as central defenders would be one of the best in the world anyway. I don´t know how many clean sheets we had this season when they played togheter. So IMO, we don´t HAVE to replace anyone of them, but I guess it´s the temptation of having the best defender in the world (Nesta) in the team that is too strong to ignore it.
So to me, I don´t see it as we are displeased with Materazzi. This is ONLY because of it is Nesta and Nesta only. And I don´t buy the Lucio thing. ;)

Perhaps, therefore, that we should look away from Nesta and more at a player with a larger aerial and physical presence, as, IMO, Matrix is FARbetter than Cordoba, and he is the "weak" link in the back line. If we were to replace Materazzi, then Nesta would be the only person that I would prefer to him. However, I'd prefer to keep Materazzi, and buy a defensive 'rock', like Campbell. Not that Arsenal are going to let him go for a penny less tha £30m, of course...
i agree with Jimmy.

if there is a weak link then it is Materazzi ... However, i dont think that it is a problem.

btw ... i would'nt swap Cordoba for Campbell ! ALSO Campbell is no where near 30m ... 20m MAX !!! ... he is not even the best in the EPL.
easy question with no doubt,materazzi..agree with u guys
but and that defend line is good..

My dude SAC...;) ...I think none of our central defender is that weak. The point is that if you have a chance to get the best defender in the world (NESTA) then you try to get him for 2 reasons:

1) of course if he is the best he'd strengthen your team
2) it's better to see that player in your team than in the condenter's for the title...:D

Who is better than Campbell in the Premiership? Inter offered him 10m/year last summer - so he must be one of the best players in the world, not just the best 'rock' in the EPL.

Hyypia.

And Inter has done many stupid things in the past but offering Campbell so much money surely wasn't one of them. Plus, had they indeed offered such salary, Campbell would be an Inter player right now. Did Arsenal offer more? I don't think so.

Hyypia is not better. Campbell plays in an attacking team, and played better. Everyone in England realises that he was one of the players of the season in the EPL after his switch from Spurs.

Inter did actually offer him £200k/week! He said at the press conference at which he was unveiled by Arsenal that, although Inter offered him almost 3 times the amount on offer at Arsenal, he went to Arsenal because he wanted to stay in England. It wasn't a matter of money - but his international future was at stake, and his family is all in London.
I would rather we sell Gresko and Simic and keep Materazzi if that's possible

Simic almost never played but some people here worship him....I have seen at least 5 matches that Simic had made a terrible mistake in his manmarking that Inter conceed a goal
