Something similar happend in the 1990 World Cup, where Ireland and Holland were tied with exactly the same records for the 2nd spot, as the first spot was taken by England. Then, they decided the 2nd of the group by a draw that Ireland won, and Holland "finished" third of their group this way. Both teams then advanced onto the next round, with Ireland facing and beating Romania in the 2nd round in pks and Holland having the redoubtable "chance" of facing Germany, the future winners of that year's competition. One major factor compared to 1990 is that in that time, the first 2 teams were qualified for the 2nd with the best 3rd teams but nowadays, only the top 2 do advances. It would be horrible for any team to be "eliminated" this way, so let us hope this doesn't occur.
