Piturca joy after Rapid success

Saturday 4th May 2002

Steaua coach Victor Piturca was delighted after his side won a thrilling Bucharest derby against Rapid. "The team have got their confidence back," he said.

"We have definitely come out of our bad run and we are now going next Wednesday to win at Dinamo, to achieve a place in the Cup final. Despite of the absence of some key players we won against a very strong Rapid team."

Rapid have never lost to Steaua in their last five seasons - but their former Romania goalkeeper Bogdan Stelea made an error to ensure a truce in the fall-out between Steaua fans and coach Piturca.

Rapid were more inventive, but Steaua goalkeeper Martin Tudor was inspired.

Steaua broke the deadlock on 25 minutes, Claudiu Raducanu scoring from close range after Stelea had a miraculous first save. Seven minutes earlier, Adrian Neaga hit the foot of Stelea's post of Stelea with a drive from the edge of the box.

Ten minutes before the break Rapid skipper Adrian Iencsi missed a great chance, his header going wide with the goal at his mercy.

Only a few seconds after the break, Tudor made the save of the game as he kept out Marius Sumudica's effort from only two yards - and he was the hero again when he saved Florin Bratu's header as it looped under the crossbar.

But he could do nothing to keep out Sumudica's 69th minute header which went in off the post.

Rapid again looked more dangerous, but Stelea slipped up when he fumbled Neaga's soft shot and Claudiu Raducanu popped up to score the winner before hobbling off with a foot injury.
