South American WCQ Preview: Paraguay v. Brazil
Paraguay - Brazil | Latest News | Match Preview | News Archive

Will Ronaldo be ready? (AFP)
03/30/2004. It's number one against number three on Thursday evening in Asuncion when Brazil and Paraguay will clash. But it's the host country, not the world champions, taking up the top spot in the South American zone's qualification table with nine points; one better than Argentina and Brazil.

The Albirrojos have been in fine form since opening their 2006 World Cup Qualifying with an old fashioned whipping at the hands of Peru. But Anibal Ruiz's men rebounded nicely, first taking out their frustrations on Uruguay before defeating Ecuador and then Chile in November. Toluca's Jose Cardozo is tied for the lead among the competition's goal scorers, and either he or his striking partner Roque Santacruz would do well to score against mighty Brazil.

The Selecao will be looking for a bit of revenge against their Southwestern neighbors. In 2000, Paraguay defeated Brazil 1-0. In 2002 Paraguay stunned the newly crowned champions in Brazil in the pentecampao's first match since the World Cup final. Now, they stare up at Paraguay from their perch in the qualification table.

Manager Carlos Alberto Parreira received some bad news earlier in the week when Manchester United declared midfielder Kleberson sidelined with a knee injury. But with the run of good form displayed by Milan's Kaka, and stars such as Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos present, Parreira has reason to believe Brazil will come away with three points. Ronaldo was an injury doubt a week ago but appears to be in the manager's plans for Thursday. Inter Milan's Adriano is waiting in the wings if the Madrid striker is scratched.

POSSIBLE LINEUPS:
Paraguay: Ricardo Tavarelli; Francisco Arce, Carlos Gamarra, Denis Caniza, Paulo Da Silva; Nelson Cuevas, Julio Cesar Enciso, Jorge Campos, Carlos Paredes; Jose Cardozo, Roque Santacruz.

Brazil: Dida; Roberto Carlos, Junior, Lucio, Cafu ; Gilberto Silva, Alex, Kaka, Ze Roberto; Ronaldinho, Ronald
Giffen, Andrew
